Champions Online has builds/roles which you unlock as you level up your character. This concept allows the player to dynamically change the build/role to suit the situation the player is facing. There are of course restrictions on how frequently the player can switch roles so things do not become overpowered.
I beg you Cryptic, please add a similar system to STO where the player can set up preset load-out configuration for their ship that will include Bridge Officer station assignments, Ship parts , Weapon and Device slotting. Each load-out preset could be given a name and there should be some GUI element to allow the player to select a load-out. Items (and Bridge Officer) are taken and returned to the Inventory when the player changes load-outs, and so we don't exactly gain "new" Inventory slots.
Lastly, and most importantly, load-outs can only be changed when the ship is out of combat and while your crew is changing the load-out, a cool-down progress bar displays (like the one during ground acrobatics, i.e. sprint/rolls) and the ship cannot fire its weapons or use it's engines if those items are being replaced.
I'm just kind of tired of manually replacing items and re-slotting Bridge Officers when in the "real" Trek (i.e. the shows/movies) all Kirk had to do was ask Scotty to just do it... are we Captains, or what?
Naturally, Cryptic should also properly re-slot our BO skills into the power trays, so it's not an easy system to design and implement, but I have faith Cryptic can deliver.
I support this. The energy presets are like a gimped version of the CO builds, for now. They need to expand the system to like CO though, definitely.
A couple of steps back from CO I'm seeing already:
Choose instance checkbox removed, hopefully not permanently.
Builds nonexistant.
Equips/devices should be a separate floating tray instead of eating up keys or having to open the character sheet to put stuff on. Double click to equip doesn't always work.
Store multibuy not possible because of having to confirm each time, but at least Enter works to confirm. Oddly enough when selling a stack you get to choose how much to sell, but not when buying.
So, no one else is interested in being able to switch between ship configurations that include different weapons, consoles and Bridge Officer assignments?!

Ummm... I like the idea. Not high on my priority list, but it would be useful.
100% agree. I think it should work somewhat similar to the outfitter mod for WoW.
I also have 2 additional points id like to be added:
1) You should be able to switch between ship, BO, skill bar , ship gear at the press of a button. Literally one click and im switched from my Emissary to my Defiant. One click and im out of my pve gear and into my pvp stuff.
2) You should be able to setup automatic changes. For example when I enter a pvp area I automatically switch to my pvp gear (must have it on you though).
At a minimum, I think that the way that powers get assigned to tray locations should be tied to the station. e.g. I fly a Fleet escort, so I have one lt. level Sci console, and I like to swap my Sci BO's but I would love to always have those powers automatically pop into the Ctrl+3 and Ctrl+4 slots, as I steer with my right hand on my mouse, and fight and such with my left on the keyboard.
adding the ability to swap a complete loadout, including BO assignments, would be awesome. I can certainly see swapping weapons, expecially if you have the marks for a Full [Borg] loadout and another complete purple loadout. (probably for PvP)
Additionally, I would like to add here that I would like to have a tray assignment attached to ground kits. At Present, basically the kit powers are X1-X4, so the first power in the kit will always show up in the same spot. however when I am using Grenade satchel on Cure, I want to swap where my captain power "fire on my mark" and "Plasma Grenade" end up, so I have the 3 grenades I need assigned to 8, 9, and 0. again would be a great feature to assign a hotket for loadouts like ctrl+alt+(x) that would swap my kit and tray configuration.
Yeah I think this is a great idea, I have all 6 tier 5 ships and I enjoy switching to different ones for different applications, if there was a drop down menu in the shipyard status screen where you could save your current loadout and then bring it back later, that would save me an enormous amount of time and make the general experience smoother.
At the very least Cryptic, could we please get a brief explanation of how to make macros or keybinds that allow us to quickly and easily switch our gear while out-of-combat? Pretty please?
Yeah, I definitely agree with this. Switching BOs and gear for different tasks takes a fair amount of time. Having preset configurations isn't really needed, but it'd sure as hell be nice. Right now, I'm forever forgetting something when I change between my PvE and PvP gear/BO sets.

Yes, switching configuration between PvE and PvP is a great example for this feature, however, even switching PvE configurations to fight different enemies, say Borg or Klingons would be a good example.
The idea is to allow one ship to have Bridge Crew "shifts", if you will, and different ship configurations that match different combat/exploration scenarios. It would be a fun addition that would prolong the "life" of a captain/ship pairing.

i would like the ability to have 2 builds on a toon, ie. one for space the other for ground, that way i can swap to my ground setup when im on a ground mission then back to space when in space, or let the game auto swap when beaming down like with the controls... aswll that way we don't mix ground skills with space skills and keep it better organised.

If by this you mean two different sets of Bridge Officers, one set for space battles and another set for ground missions, this already exists in-game. If you mean actually splitting your character build, i.e the Captain skills and the amount of skill points you put in each skill, that I do not agree with. The whole idea of having skill points and limiting them with the SP-cap was to encourage people to prioritize their builds in ways that suit the specific character, and not simply allow every character to be good at everything a Captain can do.
Forget restating the arguements above, because they're all good. For right now, however, forget them all and think of another reason. Becasue the skill cap leaves us as only a good ship captain, a good away team member, or a crappy jack of all trades, there should be builds based on that alone! Most people are big on space, but not ground, and maybe allowing builds for skills, as well as equipment, and other things would allow a greater diversity of missions played.
Most of all, maybe anyone would finally give a TRIBBLE about 'breaking the planet' and the 'ds9' Fleet actions.
Just re-visited this old thread, and I have to say, the reason the thread is in the UI section and not in the Gameplay section, is because it's tedious to switch ships, not to mention tweaking Bridge Officer assignments and ship/personal gear. The skill point as far as I'm concerned is just fine, but the non-intuitive and tedious UI we have to work with, not so much.

i approve this idea and would like to see it implemented in near future..

Switching ships is way too annoying,,,

I agree with this and the OP's idea!
