You opted to be a "tank" type so you can have survivability.
In a game that doesn't require tanks. DPS and respawn FTW.
Science vessels at least get cool stuff/skills.
There is no reason to fly a cruiser (other than looks) because there is no reason to NOT respawn at full health and full impulse back into the fight. (theres no reason to NOT full impulse directly into a fight either)
All Hail the Respawn button of power.
Sarcastic? Yes - truthful? Yes.
I defy anyone to say they have a Console that "protects" their crew survivability. Seriously - a completely worthless (along with others) console because your crew and ship do not matter. Respawn does.

Well they can do good DPS, equip tons of beam weapons go side on to your enemy and let rip.. just make sure you have a few weapon batteries.. even tier 1 cruisers with 4 beam weapon can do qutie a bit of damage and pretty fast in beta I was always top 5 in fleet actions..
i disagree. im a cruiser admiral and i find that we do just as much dps..not in huge bursts like the other classes but we can do great sustaned damage from our 8 weapons. plus we dont have to be facing our target to be doing max damage to them.. we only need to for duel beams and to fire torps. plus in pvp the abilty to tank is a great asset cause if u can outlast the other guys buffs ..u can then tear them apart.
Yea, im the one laughing in crystalline entity watching all the little escorts get 1 shotted by the shards, and the hate flying to them because they just healed him by +10% when it took 10 minutes to get that down, and yet my slo wand steady best just keeps on rollin all turrets ablaze.
The only reason to fly something else than an escort in STO is cosmetic tastes or roleplay needs. As usual with Cryptic, the only efficient class is DPS. I often wonder why they bother creating anything else since they don't want you to play something else.

There is some truth to this. I tried playing support classes in city of heroes but ended up playing a dps because the supports were just not necessary. As I understand champions online is the same deal but I've never played that myself so I can't verify.
Things can always change though. Even if Cryptic isn't much into changing they now have a major IP they're licensing which may give them incentive to deliver a better concept.

Delazure got the point.
I actually fly a cruiser due to cosmetics. But its a useless class of ship.
i'm not flaming, i'm just saying the MMO tank/heal/dps categories of ships don't work here because you do not need the holy trinity to do anything here. Just respawn and repeat. Cruisers are not required at "Boss" fights or any fights.
But they do look cool and if you enjoy flying them go ahead. When you go into fleet actions that you can 'earn' stuff by being top of the list. Enjoy your batteries.
I suppose that if you're looking to min/max only, then cruisers are not the way to go.
However, *I* take it as a failure if my ship gets blown up, even if the game itself does not impose any significant penalty on me. How I feel about it is more important to me than how the game feels about it.
Cruiser Captains Reporting in.
The trip to Admirale will be fun, and if you can finish Fleet(raid) Missions with 20 escort ships, the endgame would not be my kind of fun and i will move on anyway.
Come back after endgame when that raid boss wipes out your group of escorts and resets to 100% health.
No such thing as a raid, when you all just respawn and are at full power to engage again. I'll take 12 or whatever escorts versus anything else (maybe a science ship or 3), no reason to waste spots with a cruiser though.
p.s. you do realize there's no 'aggro' management either for cruisers, he who does damage = aggro/attention which is again, escorts.
12 escorts alpha strike, each respawns quickly after done and repeat till dead. Raid over.
What MIGHT happen is you get the 'scoreboard of dps' after and the top escorts get sweet stuff and your cruiser gets a battery. Poor science guys also even though they helped with debuffs/buffs.
Well, as a cruiser captain, i do feel there are advantages to the playstyle.
Three of my fleet colleagues were talking in teamspeak the other day about a mission they were finding tricky. They were all in escorts and they were talking about "patrol patterns" and selective pulling to try to break large groups of enemy ships.
I came along, joined the mission and merrily flew into the whole lot without any real concern. I took a battering, but i came out the other side intact.
I like to use mines, i have 360 degree dps with wide phasers and my turning rate isnt much of a problem because of the way i fit my ship and officers.
I dont envy escort players, because a large number of them end up as cowards, or feel they need to die repeatedly to defeat enemies. I am happy to take it a little slower and safer, while having the power to heal my friends.

Same here. My character is Tactical, but I swiftly changed from Escort to Cruiser when I hit Lt. Commander because I consider it a failure on my part to have my ship destroyed in combat. I like being able to soak up everything my PvE foes can throw my way. I like having more weapons than an Escort. I like having a larger ship that actually feels like a Star Trek capital vessel rather than some dinky runabout-looking thing. These are all points of personal preference. I don't really care what other people think about it. I.get the most enjoyment and satisfaction in this game by playing it -my- way.

Science ships are an option if you like the abilities and debuffs playstyle. Sensor scrambling is fun.

In your opinion. Just saying...
Also you must have seen how ugly the tier 2 escorts are? Baring the Saber they look like they were squashed by a shovel.

Science ships are fun, multi-faceted class.
Cruisers are for those who like the look - but don't be thinking any fleets out there will be looking for a 'tank/cruiser' for any engagements. They are unnecessary.

I've died maybe twice in all of my escort ship flying. May I suggest you go escort so this game actually requires some effort once in a while?

And so are your opinions. Why do you care what people choose to play? You choose what you enjoy the most, and let others do the same. Are you that sad a person that you have nothing else to do but get into other people's business and "LOL" at them for what they choose to do?

I died ... well ... let's just say more than twice, until I changed over to Cruisers at Lt. Commander. I would go in with guns blazing, trying to take on a whole group of enemies at one time, because that is how I prefer to play. I couldn't do that, in an Escort. I can, in my Cruiser.

Tanking in pvp is awesome.
I'm T2 now Tac captain flying a cruiser (yes irony) - just because the escorts are so horribly ugly.
