So on a whim today I decided to test something. I logged in to the STO web site and created an account using a bogus email address. I then sent emails to about 10 of my friends' usernames in game. This took all of about 2 minutes.
What kills me about this is that I didn't have to register a CD key to send mail to in game characters, all you need is a web browser and some free time.
I even started looking at the source code to the web site mail page, it would be easy enough to write a program to compose emails and send them, all you need is a list of usernames, which, is easy enough to get from the game, and a wee bit of programming experience.
What the hell guys?
You cant remove spam entirely, but can you at least put a limit to who can send mail to people in game? Make the spammers buy more copies of the game if they want to flood our inboxes with this TRIBBLE.
WTF?
they dont even need the Game???
then the Report Spam feature is just useless
From what I noticed, there is no "report spam" feature attached to your mailbox, unless I missed something. I got 6 spam mails yesterday and couldn't find the report button, just delete. I also have the sneaking suspicion that "reporting spam" on in-game chat just puts the person on your ignore list.
Yeah, I logged in... saw 8 messages... asked myself how many were gold farm spammers... checked my messages... 1 from the exchange because I sold a MkIV Tactical kit and 7 from spammers.
Nothing like that warm fuzzy feeling you get from knowing people love you enough to spam you.
That really is something they should fix. You should have an nontrial account before you can send or receive mail so at least they'd get some cash from the spammers and cut out a lot of the TRIBBLE flooding our mailboxes.
Is it really that hard to put controls in place to avoid this? You have a band-aid in place, but at the very least make people pay for the game before they are allowed to send e-mails as it was suggested earlier or remove sending e-mail to the game from the forums.

Checked the website today, wow 8 mails, great I must have a nice stock of energy credits waiting in game if all my items have sold on the exchange...

Toggles the whitelist for all chat. If enabled, you will only receive emails from friends, SG members, and Team members
Tada... No more spam!
That is a band-aid, not a fix.
Can you guys do anything about that???
