Corrupt PIG file error since today

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Not sure what the heck happened since STO was running flawlessly for me with ZERO issues. I login today and start fighting some Galors and suddenly my screen freezes completely for about 45 seconds. When it finally un-froze I was down to about 2% structure. Then 30 seconds later while I was still fighting that Galor I got the same freeze.

I logged off, restarted PC and did a "Force verify" from the STO client launcher and I am still having this problem. It only happens when I'm fighting in space. No issues whatsoever during ground combat or walking around stations etc.

Finally after freezing for about 20 times total in a few hours I got this error message and I took a screenshot. I can't seem to post the screenshot in this forum but this is what it said:

Fatal Error: Corrupt pig file detected
Read failed for file: Sound/Win32/Music_Genericbattle7.Fsb

Technical Details: ./piggs/sound.hogg:
Sound/Win32/Music_Genericbattle7.Fsb: Corrupt pig file detected
Read failed for file: Sound/Win32/Music_Genericbattle7.Fsb

Again - I never had any issues with STO before this. I'm completely shocked because I did not change a darn thing in my PC. It's as if overnight some tribbles got into my system and broke everything!

Please help!

I can't fight a single space encounter now without locking up. I don't know what to do. :(

**Edit** While I'm at it I think its worth pointing out that my "cursor" in game keeps messing up too. Icons keep getting corrupted. Maybe that has something to do with it as well?

ok the file in the error SOUND.hogg has become corrupt some how this is unlikely to cause issues with your cursor or icons being corrupt, which is another problem

next time you start STO click options and select force verify, logon to STO and it will verify all the files and may fix the corrupt file

if you still get the same error browse to file named which can be found in \Program Files\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\piggs
find the sound.hogg file and rename the file sound.hogg.old
from the STO launcher click options and select force verify again and logon this time the sound.hogg file will be redownloaded
if the problem is now resolved delete the sound.hogg.old file

for your cursor problem once ingame go options (press esc select options from the menu) go to video -troubleshooting options and click to select software cursor on

    Thank you for your suggestion:

I did everything you said and I still freeze during space battles. I guess the pig file isn't the only thing that's messed up. I did force verify 5 times total and still no luck.

Any other suggestions? I submitted a tech support ticket too

    find the file called sound.hogg

    rename it sound.hogg.old

Run the launcher. It will redownload the hogg file. If it works, you can go ahead and delete the old file.

I have tried that about 10 times now. Force verified and still nothing.

Tho now I have a new error. Now a different error pops up that says something similar and just crashes the game.

This is very very frustrating. There must've been some recent changes made to the codes that's making the game misbehave like this. I can't imagine it has anything to do with my PC. The game is unplayable now. I cannot stay logged in more than 10 minutes or attempt to do a single mission without getting fatal error messages.

what does the error say exactly, the error message may lead to a possible solution without it well lets just say we'll be here for ever

The latest error said the following before freezing/crashing:

Fatal Error: Read wrong number of bytes

    Technical Details: ./piggs/bins.hogg:

same process again as you did earlier, browse to the piggs folder and rename the bins.hogg file bins.hogg.old and run a force verify again

if the same error appears for another hogg file do the same again

I don't understand. Suppose I did that again but it still doesn't solve the problem. It didn't solve the problem for the sound hogg file either. Each of these files are 500mb upto 2 gigabytes in size so are you suggesting that each time I get this error I should be downloading those files just to continue playing??

If so... I'm deeply disturbed and clearly made a mistake becoming a lifetime subscriber.

I looked thru the directories and found a Hogg error file that said the following:

    try this:

Move all the .hogg files from piggs/ to prepatch/piggs/ (overwrite what is already in the prepatch/piggs/ folder) and try patching up.

i know back in CO this solved a lot of errors. And a dev has asked someome to try it for STO. Couldnt hurt to try.

There is definitly a problem with somethign on your system corrupting these files. We just need to find out what it is.

Also I can't imagine I'm the only one experiencing this problem? This cannot be an isoloated event can it? What could've possibly caused these files to be come so corrupt overnight? I'm so confused.

There might be a bit of a wait while it patches up. It all depends on how theyve set up the STO patcher. But if this doesnt work, then i'm thinking you might have bad sectors on your HDD, or something wrong with your drivers.

The only thing I did between the time I logged off the day before and today (when the errors began) is doing a deep optimize defragmentation on my hard drives. This is nothing abnormal tho since I have done deep optimization several times during beta and since launch. Every couple of days my defragmenter is setup to run a full optimization overnight. Could this have possibly caused this? Should I disable deep optimization?

**Edit** And yes, it is a 10gb download so will take a bit.

While a defragment is a good idea to keep your comp running smoothly, you need to remember that it moves files around. While this usually does not affect any programs, in very rare cases it can cause issues.

See where the repatch gets you first. It basically downloads the game from cryptics servers, but will doa full check of each file first. if you still get errors after doing this, my money is on a windows problem.

I have an issue with hogg files decompressing and crashing the game to desktop and I'm in a similar situation to the OP. I could turn off my once a week scheduled defrag but I agree with the OP, this isn't really a fix if we have to keep downloading gigs worth of files.

I'm concerned it may be an architecture / setup issue with how Cryptic codes and deploys these games. I've never encountered a game (that I noticed) that used these HUGE hogg files (btw I assume the whole piggs folder, .hogg thing is all a reference to whoever created the system realizing how huge these files are). Why would my other programs and online, local games etc. run fine for hours and hours yet the constant extracting from these files in Cryptic games cause this? I ran chkdsk, no errors on disk.

Is there a more in-depth disk check program we can or should try to use?

I'm having the same problems. Started Friday night (worked flawlessly during Open Beta), so I deleted all of the HOGG files and let them download again from scratch (took 2 days). Ran flawlessly Sunday evening and yesterday and now 4 different files are reporting CRC, byte mismatch, and file locked errors (A/V completely excludes folders for STO), plus I am now getting a version mismatch error if I actually make it past character selection. I was in game for over an hour tonight before these errors popped up again, so I find it strange that I now have a different version of the game.

This should not be happening. I play several other MMO's and have never had a problem with corrupted files. I highly doubt my system is at fault here.

Well, I have now tried the following and the issue still persists.

    1. Deleting all hogg files and downloading it all again (10gb) (no luck)
    2. Uninstalling STO completely then reinstalling it to a different drive this time (no luck)
    3. Uninstalling WINDOWS VISTA and formatting BOTH my drives and then reinstalling STO (3rd times a charm? apparently not)

After all this I still continue to have the corrupt pigg file error. I can say at this point that it is NOT my pc. It is most definitely something on cryptic's end with the the last patch/code for the game. And, I am getting even more "corrupt pig file" errors. I will add another one to the list of growing corrupt files:

bumping for a dev response. Identical issue has had me sidelined for over 2 days now (time required to completely re-download all of the HOGG files again).

I'm not going to stick around for a game that requires a complete file refresh (that takes 2 days or more on my connection) and will only allow me 3-4 hours of playtime before it goes south again. Other players are reporting the same issues, and I am not seeing anything in the way of permanent solutions from Tech Support here.

This all worked fine in Open Beta and then developed issues during Headstart.

if these files keep becoming corrupt i can think of a few possible reasons

1/your disk drive or disk controller is failing. if this is the case you will see a lot of red flags in event viewer indicating disk errors
2/theres an issue with reading\writing to the cache on the disk again event viwer will show red flags which indicate cache errors this can be caused by disk failing but disabling write chaching on the disk (and or advanced\enhanced cahing in vista\win7) can resolve the issue as a temporary measure
3/your antivirus is tying up the files as STO is trying to access them this can happen with some antivirus softwares that scan files as your pc accesses them. disabling this feature and\or adding STO to the software ignore list may prevent the issue re-occuring

note errors from both 1 and 2 above can be caused by your harddisk not being securely plugged in check your cables

Also run a test on your RAM, slowly failing Ram can also cause bad rewrites to your HDD. I havent got a link but you can download a program called memtest.exe, I would suggest running that to see if you have any memory errors.

Also try this click on run and type CMD Find the Icon for the Dos window and click it. You should see the window open at the C:\user\[your name]. From here you will need to go to the root directory. Type in cd c:\. This will bring you to the root directory at the c prompt which is c:\

Once at the c:\ type sfc/scannow and hit enter. You will see where it says verifying files and a number with a % sign behind it. Once the scan is finished it will give you a message that tells you if the system had any corrupted files and whether or it could be repaired.

This will check to see if its just STO files that are being corrupted. if not then there maybe something wrong with your hardware.

    SFC (system file checker)
afaik the file catalouge that SFC uses never gets updated when you install service packs or windows updates the SFC file cheker is only as up-to-date as the installer used to install windows. it not only checks for corrupt files but also files that are not as expected so it will try to replace any files that have been updated by service packs and windows updates. if you run SFC you will need to reinstall your service packs and install windows updates again

SFC /scanonce is the best option. it will scan your pc after you next reboot your pc and before files are locked by windows and will be able to replace any files it needs without having to reboot your pc

SFC does not catalouge files used by STO and will not check any filed used by STO only the verify processes by the STO launcher will check the integrity of those files

I have had several crashes of STO from pigg files to a CRC force verified several times to no avail. These errors cause a blue screen from windows 7 and as a result i dumped the downloaded client and doing fresh install from disc and repatching hopefully this will fix it i dont know what happened to corrupt texture and sound files and it seemed almost exclusively centered around episodic content. No problems with patrol missions. The blue screen errors focused on memory and forced a dump. Memory diagnostic was all clear other than faulty driver for sound card wich was fixed. As of today another crash to desktop and then i uninstalled it and am install as i type this.

And the cursed 1,5 gb patch i cant fully download ever and i tried it lots of times

Since the cursed patch is live i got the error, then i assume the trouble isn´t in the cpus the problem its a cryptic´s issue

You are not alone, i have also been having bad Hogg files and problems with file going corrupt or bad compression,so much so i went ahead and replaced my hard drive, most of the issues seem to have gone, but yesterday i had some bad hogg files creep back in and stop me from playing as well.

I'm not sure whats going on either, but i feel i have done all i could, even deleted and reloaded the entire hogg directory more times than i care to admit, along with re-installing the whole game a few times as well.

I have had constant hogg problems since I installed this game last weekend. Neverending CRC errors, etc.,

I've tried redownloading hogg files. I've moved pigg folder to prepatch/pigg, no luck.

I've got an above average rig, I keep i up to date driver-wise. It's a 6mo old HD, new install of W7, Nvidia 9500GT, dual core chip.

I don't think that these errors should happen as often as this. Surely this was all tested out on various equipment and combinations? I am sceptical of having to download content as it is, and this game hasn't helped much. I think I'll stick to PS3 from now on which is a pity considering I've been playing PC games for 15 years now.

i have also been having bad Hogg files and problems with file going corrupt or bad compression,so much so i went ahead and replaced my hard drive, most of the issues seem to have gone, but yesterday i had some bad hogg files creep back in and stop me from playing as well.

did you ghost over the old drive to the new one? Or did you do a fresh clean install of everything..?
also, what version of windows are you all running that are having this issue? Some suggested they did a defrag and after that it started having issues... mine is defragged every week and have had no issues..

Vista Enterprise (yep, Enterprise, maybe thats why i have had no issues lol) 64 bit
