I constantly, recently, get crashes to desktop. I mean more so than the usual amount for a Cryptic game. It's always "error decompressing data". In the hoggs error log I see "File read from disk has bad CRC.". I've run chkdsk, defrag, memtest, rebooted, cold booted but still, randomly the decompressing data error occurs.
I uninstalled the game and re-installed it, same thing. I can't be the only one that's getting this. The other software I run and the other online games I play run fine, all day. Why is this happening? I set the game to run as admin as the help FAQ suggested and my video drivers are up to date. I even tried setting a framerate limit and lowered my resolution when playing. What the heck is going on?
Something to try: Move all the .hogg files from piggs/ to prepatch/piggs/ (overwrite what is already in the prepatch/piggs/ folder) and try patching up.
No offense taken Healer, thank you for the suggestion. I'm running 3+ ghz AMD 720 BE processor with 8 gigs of DDR3 ram on Win 7 64 bit with 2 ATI 4830 cards xfired. I have two 7200rpm IBM 300gb drives installed.
Thanks CodeRanger, I'll do that. I have 32 gbs of free HD space, that should be enough shouldn't it? I'm not running anything in the background.
ATI cards seem to cause a lot of issues with this engine right now. Have you tried disabling the dynamic lighting and postprocessing? If that lessons the amount of crashes there are a few other things that might eliminate them completely.

I was having the same issue when Open Beta first came out. It was completely random, sometimes hitting me 5 minutes into the game, other times I could play for hours without a problem. To fix it, I deleted everything except the .exe file for the launcher. When you start the game it downloads everything (about 10 gigs). For the last few days of Open Beta I was able to play without a single problem.
Then they closed OB, and started the retail version with a 56 meg patch. The crashes with either bad CRC errors or decompressing errors started immediately that day. I've tried just deleting the specific .hogg files that get mentioned each time an error pops up, but even force verifying the game would not get my past 15 seconds of play time while in sector space.
Yesterday I deleted the entire .piggs folder and downloaded the 10 gigs or so again. I was able to play last night for 3 hours without a problem.
I also met the minimum specs, I have had dynamic lightning turned off since I first started playing, had my drivers up to date. I've run all the same tests you did, almost hoping it was a hardware problem. When I had some similar issues in World of Warcraft, simply running as admin fixed it for Windows 7. Not so with STO.
I am sincerely hoping with the absurd amount of crashes and cryptic errors my one account has been sending in that they can fix this issue. I will be quite put out if the solution to every patch they issue for this game is for me to do a complete reinstall via download.
Thanks Justag, I'll try that. I'm having trouble getting my ATI control panel to open for some reason though.
@Stump2001, I feel ya', it drives me crazy. I do NOT want to reinstall Windows again but I'm starting to think I may have to. I see there's an active Wine port community running in other threads here and I'm running a dual boot with Linux Mint 7. Are ATI cards just not getting the support in the industry that Nvidia cards get? I invested some money into this x-fire setup to boost my one card and I'd hate to think it was for nothing.
I also saw a suggestion to turn on v-sync (willing to try anything) but it just seems to make the screen flicker more.
Has anyone seen an error "failed to load the mmc snapin" when trying to view their event log or load task scheduler? ...I hate Windows. If they'd just make more of these games for Linux and/or Mac compatible I'd drop it all together.
btw, after the 10 gig DL last night I got in for an hour+, no problems. Came back tonight to play and it CTD'd after character selection.
Here's what I'm getting in the CrypticStudios folder error.log:

Here are the three common errors I see in the hogg_errors.log file:
Error decompressing data. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.
100211 02:10:00 81 MasterControlProgram[1]: Read wrong number of bytes
100211 02:10:04 83 MasterControlProgram[1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. (especially this one).
My other software runs fine and I cold booted and ran a chkdsk in safe mode with no errors. Is there a better disk checking program I should run? The game seems to have trouble reading and/or unpacking the files it needs from the larger texture files.
I have had this bad CRC error from the start. Only been able to create a character, then crash on the loading screen after I hit Play.
I remember a similar issue with City of Heroes, but a force verify would fix it and I could log in after the second patch.
Mine always crashes with the same file listed in the popup window; and like you Vandal, I have tons of checksum errors in the log.....
Unlike most (if not all) of you, I am only using my friends buddy pass; was gonna try it out before I go buy it. 5 days in and ... I have a character....
THough it should not be an issue, are any of you - with the CRC errors - running a RAID 0 hdd setup?
I WAS running a RAID 0 prior to my current configuration but I'm not currently. Code Ranger, any suggestions? Anyone know a good in-depth disk check program that goes beyond the Windows chkdsk?
Still having lots of crashes during file verification and patching.
However, after moving all files from Piggs to Prepatch/Piggs and then redownloading/patching (and crashing dozens of times) I was finally able to play for a short while.
Has anyone else with these issues previously downloaded the AMD program DualCoreOptimizer ?
I had to install that to play some of the older MMOs and other games when I first built this PC.
Could that be causing some of these issues?
I'm getting these same errors all the time. It's usually when I'm zoning and the game is trying to load a texture of some sort it says one of the files in the piggs folder fails a crc check during decompression. I've deleted and repatched these files numerous times to no avail. My play time can be completely random. aT times I can play for a few hours before i crash then other times it will crash when I try to load my character into the world. I'm wondering if maybe it isn't a sync issue beteween the client and server that my client is responding to fast for the server to handle? Therefore the server believes the file is invalid and bombs out the client.
Ironically, since my last post four days ago, I have been able to accomplish exactly one thing, and that was fight in a space battle two days ago to test the new install.
I was crashing so many times just trying to patch or verify the game files that I copied the game files directly from the DVD. Then, I deleted each separate hogg file and downloaded it one by one.
Start up the game, and it immediately crashes saying that two different reads of one of the bin files produced two different results. Everything was done with norton anti-virus and firewall turned off. I highly doubt this is the cause anyways, because my wife's computer has the same anti-virus and has absolutely zero of these problems.
I am officially out of ideas about how this can be fixed on my end. I've done a chkdisk twice, Memtest86+ twice, reinstalled and redownloaded more times than I can count, including from the cryptic server download .exe. So, here is my DxDiag

I'm seeing this as well; only started yesterday. Trying to enter (well, continue) a mission in the Hadrian system and...
Fatal Error
Fatal Error: Error decompressing data. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.
Technical Details: ./piggs/texture.hogg: Texture_Library/Space/Space_Sky/Domes/Space_Dome_Hadrian_01_D.Wtex: Error decompressing data. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.
Verifying the files made no difference. Up until now, the only crashes I'd ever seen were rare and of completely different causes.
I ran chkdsk again, cleaned a few files, minor, rebooted, loaded nothing else, went to load, got to choose character and BAM fatal error decompressing a texture.hogg trying to find a texture.
@Cryptic: Is there another log we can setup or produce to give more details?? Why are we getting this over and over? I've run MemTest 86+ as well with no errors. I have two hard drives installed but Windows is on it's own drive with no other partitions.
Hmmm... game crashed when I tried to enter the Hadrian system - again; reloaded and then it died again as soon as I chose my character from the login screen.
I know there's nothing wrong with my system; I use far more intensive software than STO and those packages are completely stable.
Hmm, at least you are getting into the game !! i've had it for nearly 2 weeks and can't get passed the bloody loading screen !!! My computer is a brand new Alienware Aurora and all the specs are 1st class BUT when the loading screen with the 'Badge' appears, it starts loading for a few seconds and then it freezes and my keyboard turns off...WTF !! I aint got much more patience This game is going to be flying oot my window soon
I'm still facing identical problems. 4 times trying to land on Rator III, and all 4 times get a crash from texture2.hogg. Force verified twice, deleted and re-patched the file once and am now waiting for it to redownload again after deleting a second time. I have already completely replaced the entire PIGG directory 3 times in the last 2 weeks due to errors like this, and uninstalled/reinstalled twice as well, and they keep coming back.
My system is well above specs, memtest and chkdsk do not find any issues at all, and I do not face these types of issues in any of the other MMO's I play. Game ran perfectly during open beta, and started this behavior after the patch that brought the game Live.
Hi. Sorry for my bad english wich will follow.
I have the same problems. Sometimes i play 4-5 Hours without a problem. Then i´ll go to a system and BÄM crc error. I have tried the same things wich was post here. But it still doesnt work.
I have run it on 3 different harddisks but everytime the same.
Only one thing is new. Now iam crashing when i go to the bank. befor that it only happens when i go to a system. there migth be a chance of 50 % of crashing. But did i go to a system in a fog or a belt there it looks like a chance of 90 % for a crash. I dont understand this.
Hope cryptic will do something against it.
perhaps its realy an ati problem. Have the 4850.
ground crash are rar since i turn off the lightning option.
I ve tried a lot of things to end this CRC decopressing error, but it comes back evry time.
And its allways the same ....
1. texture2.hogg error (copy/paste from dvd and patch - problem solved)
i can play, all fine - but then randomly ...
2. texture.hogg error (copy/paste again and it works)
3. texture3.hogg (same)
After reinstalling and patching all texture.hogg .... bins.hogg following ....
bins.hogg is first and then 2 and 3 ....
Well, copy/paste + patch - game works again ....
Later ???.hogg (cant find this file anywhere) decompression error ....
THAT IST NOT A PROBLEM OF OUR COMPUTERS OR SYSTEMS! ITS A STO PROBLEM.
CRYTIC PLEASE FIX THAT!
ITS A RARE PROBLEM AND ONLY A HAND OF USERS GOT IT! BUT WE CANT PLAY! SPEND TIME ON IT PLEASE!
I ve got 150 games and all running fine on my system. Accept STO - alll drivers up to date, quad core intel, Nvidia grafics, vista64 (running perfect since 3 Years without problems).

If copy and pastign makes it work, then theres something on your system thats corrupting it. Throw a post in the tech forums and ask Politely for coderangers help. he'll probably be able to help you.

No, No and No.
Not to be rude but this is not a local client issue(PC related). I, obviously, am not aware of your technical skills nor savy, so don't take this the wrong way...
I am currently on day 2 of my 5 day trial. Back to back patches have impeeded my ability to log into the game, furthermore, I am now troubleshooting someone elses issue as well. The issue is not the local client (PC).
IF copying from the disk eliminates peoples problems with the patch sets / updates AND they get errors like these (see below), THEN it is a file verification problem!!! It is not the clients PC... it is a CHECKSUM error due to improper implimentation of the file verification system:
AKA THEY DID NOT PATCH THE FILE SET SERVER SIDE WITH THE UPDATED FILE CHECKSUMS! (furthermore, most likely this is a client side file verification issue as well since the local client is writing logs stating its the wrong checksums)
This is the ONLY explination why the client IS NOT patching files copy'd directly from the DISK. This would also explain why people are crashing non stop changing zones, going to the bank etc... they are trying to load items that do not exist on thier local client, sound maps that are incorrect etc....

So why are some people getting this and others (majority) not if we are all using the same code and patch server?

if so, update all drivers, then try..for imo it either your computer not good engouth...or drivers..hope this helps
Thanks CodeRanger, I'll do that. I have 32 gbs of free HD space, that should be enough shouldn't it? I'm not running anything in the background.
(I have a TON (thousands of lines) of these failed checksum received file errors, not sure if related to my massive 10 gig hogg download last night or not)

My other software runs fine and I cold booted and ran a chkdsk in safe mode with no errors. Is there a better disk checking program I should run? The game seems to have trouble reading and/or unpacking the files it needs from the larger texture files.
However, after moving all files from Piggs to Prepatch/Piggs and then redownloading/patching (and crashing dozens of times) I was finally able to play for a short while.
Has anyone else with these issues previously downloaded the AMD program DualCoreOptimizer ?
I had to install that to play some of the older MMOs and other games when I first built this PC.
Could that be causing some of these issues?

@Cryptic: Is there another log we can setup or produce to give more details?? Why are we getting this over and over? I've run MemTest 86+ as well with no errors. I have two hard drives installed but Windows is on it's own drive with no other partitions.
I know there's nothing wrong with my system; I use far more intensive software than STO and those packages are completely stable.
Any ideas?

My system is well above specs, memtest and chkdsk do not find any issues at all, and I do not face these types of issues in any of the other MMO's I play. Game ran perfectly during open beta, and started this behavior after the patch that brought the game Live.
Have the 4850.
ground crash are rar since i turn off the lightning option.
so far.
Greating´s from germany : )
Accept STO
