Thank You To The Captains Who Actually Play STO As, Y'Know, A STAR TREK Game

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
My sincere thanks to all the players in Star Trek Online who make an effort to honor the spirit of the game by actually creating and naming characters and starships which could potentially be a part of Star Trek's fictional universe.

I see you in-game; your captains, and your ships, and I read your character bios while I'm flying through Sector Space as a way to pass the time -- and your attempts at contributing to the Star Trek feel of things in Star Trek Online actually make my own gameplay more enjoyable.

I know it's "free month with purchase" time, and a lot of people playing Star Trek Online right now are just playing it because it's the new MMORPG release, and they don't really care about Star Trek one way or another.

That said, there are days when all the off-genre characters seem a bit much -- the female Vulcan captain named "David Hasselhoff Robocop" flying the USS LOLZORZ and wearing an orange and lime green uniform -- I understand why it happens in games, but I have a lot more respect for those who try to add to the "genre feel" of an MMORPG -- any MMORPG, not just STO.

So thank you, good captains. You're not just improving your own quality of gameplay, you're improving mine.

Cheers,

KOS

I agree.I just wish more people would take five minutes to do a Bio.Only about 1 out of every five ships I see has a Bio for thier Captain. It really adds to the immersion.More people should spend time in the game having fun instead of in the forum *****ing all the time. Now of course someone is gonna come into this post and say "you are in here *****ing":D But then they would be *****ing about me *****ing about *****ing.:p Anyway, back to the OP's point. It really does add to the game when people try to stick with the spirit of Star Trek.I have seen many creative names that would do Gene Roddenberry proud.

You know I get what you saying and why your saying it, but from a Objective point of view all I see is. "Hi my name is Elitest Blah blah blah. Thank you for Blah Blah Blah" And I know that's not what your trying to say but when you read the post that's what it sounds like.

Stop *****ing about *****ing!!! lol, anyway, I didn't write a bio for my character, though I did try to keep the name and ship names as something that doesn't stand out too much. Both my captain and all my ships are named after different snake species. The names that really annoy me are the people who name their ship/captain after other video games, like today I saw a ship named after a faction from World of Warcraft, which really threw me out of the immersion of the game, and all those ships named after iconic movie characters really don't belong in a Trek game. Thank you to all those people who take the time to come up with an original name.

I did one for my Cardassian in open beta.. but I was in such a hurry to get out of the beginner missions during the headstart, I never wrote one up for my human character. I honestly forgot about it.. but I'll try and write something up as soon as I can.

    Thanks for mentioning it.

Thank you to everyone who plays this game however the hell they want to play it.
Because at the end of the day no matter how badly you may want to be you are not part of the Star Trek universe any more than you are an Italian plumber named Mario...you're just playing a game based on it.

I have a Star trek appropriate name and ship. Bio is another problem altogether. I had enough problem with the names.

I agree. I was coming up with my bio a week before the game came out, and it's fun to discover others who put a lot of thought into how they fit in the Star Trek world. My boyfriend and I even came up with a bit of backstory involving our captains dating back when they were in the Academy, but due to the war and their new duties as captains fighting in it, they've been forced to put their relationship on hold.

I agree that you should have something in your bio, the more info about who your toon is the better... Now I will admit that I do use a place holder from time to time till I get the feel of the toon I am playing... Something like "Data is being transferd, or file under review) but that just till I under stand the toon and make a complete bio for it...

PS: I forgot to say on my Liberated borg I also did the Bio's on each of my BO's...

    You are welcome.

Though, honestly, I haven't run into anyone else yet with a decent bio or who took the time to name their Away Team Bride Officers in keeping with lore. The funny thing is that I'm not even that huge of a Star Trek fan; I just figured that I would go ahead and get into game anyway.

I have to admit, I'm not an RP'r or a Trekkie, but I do like to be a bit creative :p

Sadly, this is the issue with having just one server, the RP'rs have to put up with.. yea

    /agree

Most of the Nocti dove into the lore creating, or in my case, resurrecting characters that fit in the Star Trek genre. I wish more players would. It makes the immersion more fun.

Of course we like when Fedobears give their ships/characters stupid names. It gives us something to target first :-)

LOL this is also a definite win.

I agree for the most part with the overall idea of seeing names that aren't just jokes.....but I love to laugh and I enjoy seeing names that make me do that lol. So the ones that are clever funny may not be Star Trek canon or anything like that, but I still smile at them. Some of the names are stupid yes, and overly offensive which isn't cool (overly offensive is obviously debatable from person to person).....but some of these, even if you don't think they should belong in the game, you gotta just laugh at. :)

Oh and Starfleet was uploading my bio onto the ship's logs when the STO server crashed...so I'm still a mystery for now.

OP, I haven't gotten around to filling in the bio section on my character. Do not confuse that, however, for me not having one. When I get around to it, it will be longer than this thread is to this point. I've played D&D for years. I am well versed in creating a deep and meaningful backstory for my characters, and my main is no different. However, after having to make him 12 times at the beginning of headstart due to server failures, I didn't feel like typing it out for a 12th time.

    So **** off.

    OOOOO SNAP

Though I don't think he was so concerned with bio as he is with ships named the U.S.S. COLTSFORTHEWIN with Captain Manning at the helm.

That would actually rock now that I think about it.

Could we get an ETA on when you will be moving off to this other game?

    Thanks in advance.

As far as names go I have no idea if my names fit the lore, I just pick the ones I like. Now a bio is a different thing all together as I am not a writer haha. I have thought about trying to come up with one however I always end up with writers block.

I probably will write bios for my BO's but people would rarely ever see those unfortunately.

This is why we need an RP/Canon only server, do we don't have to play on the same server.
