Also if you search you will find a dev post about it.

I've played MMOs with only one character slot, consider yourself lucky. :D

    Three once you unlock Klingons.
Plus two more if you got the old lifetime subscription offer before it ended.

They're suppose to add more slots as a purchasable item in the C-Store eventually.

But yes, I agree... would be nice to have more out the gate. Just seems this game wasn't made with a lot of alts in mind.

Yup, it seems weird that a company still wants to limit the characterslots, when everyone else is adding instead.

Back in f.ex. SWG you only had one slot and unlocked another when you reached Jedi with the first (2 slots was the limit) But MMO's have moved further from back then and we should not see such limits. However that is Cryptics choice and prerogative, even though I do not agree.

That was on the "same server"... on SWG you could have many more than one, I had a toon on at least half of the SWG servers.

The Dev's explained it this way: unlike other games, a character in STO not only stores his own equipment and customization, but also the data for up to ten bridge officers. So a character in STO takes much more database space than in any other MMO. This is why they set the limits so low for number of characters.

Yes, but since STO only have "one server" I was comparing one server with one server.

I also had characters on different servers in SWG and even bought several account to have more slots on same server. Not doing that ever again, though.

Yeah I know, I am not convinced about this though. There are games out there that has even more data per character and has no problems. Personally I am more inclined to believe they chose this limit to cash in on extra slots. But that is my belief and I have no way of confirming either way.

But as I wrote it is Cryptics prerogative to do this and I can not do anything about it, whether I like it or not.

As long as its right, what it says in the manual about making your whole bridge crew yourself, I'll be entertained for a while.

You can believe what you want - but I don't think there are any games out there that store more data per character. Ironically, SWG might come close.

Possibly. Then again how do you know how much data is stored for each game? The part that occurred to me was the customization values for each of your bridge officers. Lets say 1 entry in the database for each bridge officer with all their customization stats.

As a vague guess lets say 6 officers per toon. Average 1.5 toons per player. How many subscribers? Pulling a number out of my behind.... 350k. So we are talking a database table just for bridge officers. 3.15 million records right there.

Those are total guess figures that I'm just using to think out loud about this. I don't know a ton about databases either but when youre throwing around values like 3 million records in 1 database table on a system that 'should' (stop laughing) be running 24/7. Sounds like a challenge to me. :D

Though they havent said whatthe process will be, they have promised extra slots will be unlockable in game (beyond the one you get at lvl 6).
In Champions you get on eeverytime you get a toon to max lvl...it might end up being that way here.

Well if it's the data how come they can SELL you them? They either have the space or they don't and if they don't then they can't sell it can they?

Don't be so gullable McFly they gave you 3 so you will buy the rest, they are greedy.

Because extra servers cost money. Duh.

More characters = need more databases = need more money.

Absurdly wrong. If subs were to pay for infinite data storage, there would be no character limits in any MMO.

    Double-Duh.

Subs are paid for the hardware and game updates and it's on the hardware were we have all the data, thats why we pay them, you are fool tbh.

Huh makes sense, esp with bridge officers each being uniquely customized. So each player toon stored is like 4 toons in other MMOs.

I heard rumors you can eventually buy extra slots from C-store, though I bet expensive ($10-$15) my guess. And before people start whining, it's free market US/EU, deal with it.

Quite wrong, we even had some database programmers on here proving that the data is negligable, it's not about size of date it's about size of greed.

And like I said, we pay a sub for all data storage, if they don't have the room buy more servers, we pay a sub for that very reason. Blizzard give you 50 characters, LOTR give you 10, as do WAR, AOC...oh ffs the list goes on. It's all about G R E E D!!

Yet Eve only gives you three? I'm happy with it, I filled out my WoW slots and in the end I had too many characters I wanted to play and some were moth balled.

Your "database programmers" don't know what they're talking about then. But hey, feel free to cite whatever helps your delusion.

Given that you get a third slot when you unlock the Klingons... giving you esentially two character slots for the Federation, why do you need any more than that? I myself am happy with just the one character slot I'm using.
  • wulrickwulrick Member Posts: 1 Arc User
Ya seems really rediculus that they still only have two character slots. I thought it was odd back in the beta testing but then thought once it was up and running for a year or two they would add more starting slots like some other games that add more over time. I came back to neverwinter after getting a better computer that dosn't lag. I think the starting character slots should be at least 4 or 5, Especially sense players can't try out new races or classes because their stuck with two character slots and like me I have characters filling up the slots that I don't want to delete.

I think it is fine. You make your first character to explore the game and if you like it, you make your second. And in no time and if you learn the basics of the game you will start grinding and in no time you will be able to buy another 2 characters slots, and so on. It is the way this game is designed, almost like any other mmorpg but potentially inflated :)
