Aye, I tried to just enter my DS9 code so i could wait for the grace period a bit more but that code gave me 30days free and took 1pound out of my bank..
I understand it's common for MMO's to do this. They need your details in order to create an account (normally you would it's just the 30 days free that's a one off). Once you've signed up you immediately cancel your account and after 30 days free playing your cut off.

Typically $1 transactions are used to verify the card exists. Did they actually claim a pound, or did they just "reserve" it?
Cards are generally required to help build an identity to the account. GTCs are accepted (begrudgingly) as an alternative to those that don't want to give up card details.
If you're able to get a credit card you can cancel it right away after giving them the info. If you don't have a credit card you're screwed go back to enjoying wow and move on...
its standard procedure to set up method of payment your going to use when they start charging you... and the $1 dollar charge is merly a verification check to see if the card is real, it will be refunded to you within a couple of days..
