Why a Cruiser or Science Vessel over an Escort?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
That is a question I have been wondering. Since 80 percent of this game is space combat, 15 percent is ground combat, and the other 5 percent is just scanning stuff. Why choose the cruiser or science vessel over the escorts which are combat vessels?

Because of the BOs you wish to specialize in. Escorts can't access Captain Level Science BO skills much like Science Vessels can't get higher than Lieutenant Tactical BO skills. Where as they will never see Gravity Well, or possibly Viral Matrix, Science Ships will never get to use High Yield III, or that crazy +25% damage and movement speed buff. Good thing too, cause I'd laugh my way to victory stacking that with Sensor scan if I could. Lol.

actually you are right there is really no reason to play anything else than a escort, because everything in this game rewards you on damage, and you can complete all the content with just escorts if you want

we brought this up in beta and cryptic says "we are working on it", but more likley have just ignored the issue since to them it isent gamebreaking

The best skill engineer has is by far reverse shield polarity, escorts can get it

All the usefull science abilities dont even require auxiliary power, and escort can use them

Its Escort Trek online, just like it was City of Blasters online, And CHampions of ranged online

    See a trend?

Because some people like a bit of variety? If they ONLY had escorts then people would be BAWWWWing because they don't like the very specific way you need to play Escorts, so therefore don't have any way to enjoy the game...

yes.. because the game is only for powergamers.... they should just remove science and engineering altogether.

Engineer is not a ship class.

b/c science vessels have access to more cool science buff/debuffs and better shields than escorts.

b/c cruisers have access to very large hulls, better shields, and enough fire power to still be a threat than escorts.

Guaranteed one on one science slaughters an escort.

Because there is no more beautiful ship in the game than the Galaxy-class. This is because the Nebula is not in the game.

Riddle me this, JeanLucSkywalker (Rofl...) your Admiral Rank Escort vs my Admiral Rank Recon Vessel. I have Viral Matrix I maybe even II, and Gravity Well III. You have Polarize Hull I, Mask energy Signature I, Jam Sensors II. This is the best possible PVP comp you can use with Science skills on your escort EVER. I however, have ALL your skills, my Viral Matrix, Gravity well, Scramble Sensors on top of your Jam Sensors, and the ability to subsystem attack.

Let's forget all that though and get back to the riddle. I have Viral Matrix. You don't. If we fight, who's going to win? Hint: The winner is not your escort.

    qft.

I play a cruiser. My fiance plays a science vessel. We loathe escorts and laugh when they full impulse into 5 romulan battleships only to get kersplatted in 3 seconds or less. Heck, my cruiser still gets destroyed if im not careful and watching shields closely. The extend shields, engineering team, and science team help out in the whole not dieing thing, but escorts are boring and only have their damage to make themselves feel good. Problem, in fleet actions, if something targets you, you're a dead ship unless you know how to run away.

While an escort does do pretty high amounts of DPS, a kick in the shin will blow it up.
With my cruiser, If I do rotate shield freq. and emergency power to shields I become virtually indestructible for about 30-40 seconds.

And if there is a science ship around healing me. Well I become damn near godlike.

Science vessels are cruisers key to immortality:D

So an escort does really well as long as nothing is shooting at it.

Dunno. I tried playing a science vessel and a cruiser but they are too slow and it takes forever to kill something. I prefer the escorts. Quick kills.

Not true. I have no problems at all in PVE with my escort. I Kill battleships before they even hurt me. Quick and painful. Would take 5 minutes to kill what I do in 1 minute with my escort in a cruiser or science vessel

I tear through mobs in PVE in my cruiser. My alpha strike destroys frigates. It's not that hard.

PVE in STO is child's play. PVP - like in every other game - calls for skill and variety. So every ship has a place.

Because I want to fulfill my Enterprise fantasy, silly. :p

And no, I'm not talking about the one that involves Troi and Crusher.

That is a glaring omission! Would be a great science vessel. That's what it did in Armada, though perhaps not the game to emulate. Honestly, I'm really confused why we have Miranda/Constitution though. Is it just a nod to people who might have only seen those movies, because it makes no sense.

I kind of want to play cruiser just for the ships, (the high-level science ships look silly). Not sure which way I'll go though.

Because they're all combat vessels - just different styles.

Escort is the "high DPS, low survivability" vessel. It has it's uses, but if you think raw DPS is the be all and end all of combat, then you're in for a surprise... just let me know when you're thinking of PvP, I'll log on my klingon :)

Personally I think people are missing the point of mixed fleet. If you have cruiser, science and escort versus say just cruiser and escort, you're going to win. The game is all about fleet actions, teaming up with friends and enjoying the missions (at least for us it is). PvP is a small part for us, but even so we're no slouches.

I am a tactical captain in a cruiser. My friend is a science in a science, and another friend a tactical in an escort. We're a good mix, we have a laugh.

So "why play X over Y?" Because we want to.
