Server issues happen with new MMOs, this we all know. But what is so disappointing with STO is that in the few weeks it was been pre-live to live there has not only been little progress but regression. All through open beta things got worse and worse in primetime, and headstart was easily worse than open beta with more dowtime during primetime than uptime. Now we go through a relatively stable first few days and hit the first primetime since live and it is down and up and down and up and down again. Stuff happens, especially around launch time of an MMO but Crytpic's inability to make notable progress on a now two week plus old problem of capacity (so they claim anyways) really shows their questionable status in terms of being up to a real AAA title like Star Trek.

Fanboys and apologists flame away, but those who really are fair and honest have to admit that Crytpic has been riding this 'server capacity' excuse for far, far, far too long and 2 or 3 weeks in MMO time to have a problem like this persist is not acceptable. Nobody experts perfection out of the gate, but competent progress is required.

I serioulsy doubt Cryptic knew the tiger they had by the tail when they were making STO. Had they truly known the potential popularity they would have most likely made a European server and a US server to deal with the capacity issues. Frankly, I'm not sure this is Cryptic's doing as much as it is Atari's...however, to be fair neither were probably expecting the turnout STO has gotten. Is the technology truly ready to handle hundreds of thousands of connections from all over the world? I'm beginning to think an EU server wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Even if back in the beginning they thought it would not be a major attraction like a SW MMO by the time JJ's movie did well they had to know the potential was pretty big. And as I said, the whole fake surprise over all the open beta volume is ridiculous as you couldn't get in the game without consuming a key and, mostly, without pre ordering - so they knew EXACTLY how much attention was coming their way. Moreover, this is not an MMO virgin, even this code base, the engine, the server clusters - all are live with Champion's so they have all the data and metrics they need to match capacity to the sales estimates and they know exactly what is needed to scale up as well. What they did not know, what they could not have known prior to open beta, is how the 'rushed' game would hold up under load.
