Is this really a MMPORG ?

Ive played a few mmporgs and STO really isnt one. I feel its more like CoD (a first person shooter) with ships. In other games if you need help you call your friends or shout at the local market til you get a group to go fight the boss. The social aspect doesnt seem to be there unless you can keep up with zone chat. I've only noticed but a few people even talking in spatial on the starbases.
Dont get me wrong, I'm enjoying the game, Ive been a ST fan since the early 70's and this game has finally let me fly a refit Conny, (that ship and the Akira are the best looking ships in the fleet).
Comments and Flames accepted lol.

funny...i love how people call this a first person shooter (or in this case, feels like a fps), yet you cannot play in first person...also, you have no control over aim...that's a pretty big part of fps.

I don't like that zone chat cuts off when you go into a mission instance, and yes its kinda insane having so many people spread out across zones, but I find it easier to do group activities in this game than in many other MMOs.

I'm roughly lvl 6 now but have done quite a few patrol missions and deep space encounters/fleet actions with other players. I don't see alot of people talking in groups or in starbases but I attribute that to: 1. MMO newness and people keeping to themselves as they figure out the game; and 2. the stunningly large number of Trekkies who have never played an MMO and are TRIBBLE out at having to interact with so many strangers online.

I think STO is fairly called an MMO by the new emerging genre of massively multiplayer games that are similar to traditional MMORPGs, but STO is absolutely not an MMORPG. First, it is not massive enough due to the instancing, I can play and FPS game with as many people per side as most of STO - nothing massive about that in terms of the traditional meaning. Also, no persistent world - instancing is one thing but instancing entirely static maps is another - there is simply no world in STO just a series of maps that never change in any way save if they update one with a patch. Lastly, STO is very light on the social and non combat elements - no crafting, no gathering areas (see instancing above), no housing, no guild housing, etc..

Now, all the above said, I think MMORPGs are a thing of the past in the traditional sense of seamless worlds and some of the other elements above. I think that the genre has evolved, or devolved, to the point that development costs and other such considerations have them trying to be more structured and more targeted and less open and sandbox (i.e. online versions of SP games). So in that respect STO is an MMO although I can see how the lack of a persistent world (all the instancing) disqualifies it as a true MMORPG (or MMO if they use as an abbreviation of MMORPG and not as I did referring to the new genre).

Never heard of an MMPORG. Is that the new alien race you created?

As far as MMORPG, yes. Why?

Massively Multi-player: Yeah, servers are down because of the massive amounts of players.

    Online: Yep, usually.

Role Playing: You assume the role of your captain as your Avatar in the STO world. So yes, you play that role, even if you don't yell "Engage" every time you warp to sector.

Game: Yeah. One of the best Star Trek games I have played lately.

I agree about the social and MMO interaction aspect in this game, it does sometimes feel i'm playing a game that doesn't need a net connection. Zone is full of chat but too many use it so trying to keep up with what peeps are typing is a bit of a mare.

Hopefully they will add a corp/faction/guild (depends what you played in the past) style addition to the game, hell i don't even know if there is anything like that in game but haven't seen it. It's the only bit that feels somewhat missing. I know there are people recruiting but it just doesn't feel like your in something unless you actually got something for it in game.

Shall i flame?....... nope not this time :p

Guilds are in STO. They call them Fleets in this game.

Agrees here on most of that , although i would say that in most MMOs the housing issue is usually an addition well into an MMOs life.

I've grouped up more in this game in the first 10 levels than any other MMO i've played....and yes of course it's an MMO, maybe not the MMO your prefer but that's just your opinion....man!

People complain about the instancing, but it's all on one server, no split up fragmeneted community that way, it's a matter of perspective.
