so... yeah thats what they call "unexpected downtime"
all the many "why do you do maint in prime time" and "QQ im playing wtf happened??" threads should read this.
You cant give warning for crashes when even they dont know when its gonna happen
They brought it down 30 seconds before it was going to come down on it's own, if my last 300 seconds of gameplay were any indicator. That's fine. I'm not crazy about it, but it's better than waiting in queue to get in for 26 hours like WoW was.
I seem to remember in the several mmo;s ive beta'd and launched they had a pretty decent idea of load and needed machines to keep the game running during the release, when i read things posted on the 2nd telling me there expanding there capacity soon that tells me there either a bunch of low brow morons or a bunch of skin flints that are to cheap to supply the hardware to keep the game running smoothly.

Oh they said they were going to be expanding capacity *weeks* ago, in open beta after the NDA lifted

That's not really true! Except for today, the past 3 have been pretty good. So they must be doing something right. I can name several games that had constant crashes like this during the first few weeks. And it's hard to really gauge the popularity of an MMO. So I feel like they are doing a pretty good job, all things considered.

ROFL. Uh, except the 300 foot tall white elephant in your room : WoW. They start with, what, 20 worlds and day long queue times? I remember a video of a dancing undead warrior with the queue time scrolling UP at the time heh. How many weeks did it take for them to get enough horsepower to run THEIR load?
When AO launched, they released pictures of their GM staff, sleeping on mattresses in the support room while others worked computers. THey never left for days because of all the problems and not enough humans to help.
The main site has a widget that says either up or maintenance, the building that holds the servers could explode and the website would say maintenance... if the web server was in a separate building lol.
MMOGs are complex code with lots of "moving parts", bitwise. I work with large networks every day (net security ops), and I'm amazed when a company like Cryptic does pull it off. There really is no way to test these sort of things, except go live....but when you go live, "unexpected downtime" happens.
Now the true test will be, will the fixes be made quickly, or will it stagnate?
I'll give a quick example here, just to show it's not as simple as "git moar survurz!" Say Cryptic has a couple server racks exchanging data. Bandwidth between these racks is at a premium, so for a specific set of data (X), it gets load balanced for 20kbps. Well, due do code error/wierd database call/Hand of God, X is pulling 21kbps. No prob in beta, there's enough leeway in the balancer to handle it. But here comes live. Now allasudden, that extra 1kbps is overbudget, and throwing wierd errors. People start complaining, Cryptic staff has to gather data (takes time), sort logs to find the glitch (time), rig a hotfix (time), then code a real fix to keep this from happening again (more time)....and did I mention, that fix broke something else on the back end...

ROFLMGDAO now do I sound all cool and sheet to?
I was playing mmo's in 93 probably while you were throwing your rattle across the room yeah i remember lines, and i havent owned an elephant in years but hey again your to cool to believe that right.
Remember a game called EQ? how boat Ultima online or DAOC even a rather late commer called EvE yeah been to there betas and launches, after the open they put on more hardware imedeatly they didnt just promise it, and i can take a picture of a bunch of guys laying around an office real easy right before they head for the tavern.

AO's launch unfortunately killed it. I liked the scifi theme and stuff and think they could have had a massive winner on their hands if it wasn't for the abysmal launch.

No, you do not sound cool. You sound bitter and sad.
Playing MMO's in 93 probably means what, Meridian?
I was in UO at release, Air Warrior at release, LoK, Gamestorm, ect. I've probably got shirts older than you are. Definitely pots and pans. Also, as a mark of maturity, read over your post and correct rage typing like "imedeatly", it cheapens your "contribution."

First MMO I think I ever played was this game called Ten 6. We used to joke that it was 10 hours of waiting for 6 minutes of wait time. Its called Project Visitor now though

Welcome to the first month of a new mmo.
