It would be really cool to see the percentage of current population by ship class. As it stands, I think Cryptic is doing really well with balancing the draw of the three types, but I'd like to know for curiosity's sake.
escorts get all the loot because loot drops off of encounters is bafflingly based purely on DPS.
now that I'm captain, I'm starting to have *some* value as a healer/debuffer in my science ship, and engineers are good for tanking...
but until this game has a REASON for grouping and using those powers alongside others (IE raid content, missions that you have to group for), escorts will dominate.
IMO, I'd guess (purely a guess) the population breaks down as:
I'm only at Tier 2 PvP as a Klingon. If you think the numbers are skewed for Feds and classes, you'll be thoroughly entertained that we're probably 75% escorts
From the Feds I've been facing at Tier 2, it's 50% Cruisers with the rest being Science & Escorts.
Makes sense with the Feds, IMO. The shows and movies have focused on Cruisers. DS9 and Voyager were the only ones that had it different: DS9 with Defiant and the station, Voyager with a light cruiser, Intrepid-class. It would be natural for most Fed players to gravitate towards Cruisers.

Which I think is hilarious as several times in the early seasons of the show they mention how the Intrepids were built to be combat craft. (the one that sticks with me is Paris chastising Harry's clarinet with "The ship was built for combat performance, not musical performance")

Voyager's ship class is a science ship in STO.
I should know as I'm flying one >.<
