Just seems wierd to me, why cant we explore 1 think or kill 2 ships instead of 5 squads of ships, is there any reasoning behind this or is it just some number they picked?
In beta it was kill 9 of those squads most missions, and those quests took forever. Incidentally, they were also ALOT harder. Almost impossible. Think "shields completely gone after first volly of first wave" type of hard. And I'm not exaggerating.
So Cryptic agreed that those missions shouldn't take a hour plus to do, nor should they be insanely difficult. They mentioned that they wanted the average player to be able to do them in about 15-20 minutes.
So they tuned the difficulty down, and made the groups 5 instead.

Later on, you still see the 'kill 5', but there's more variety. Like, repair 4 (that's guarded by 3 pats), defend against waves, defend a damaged ship (in which you will kill waves, beam down for a boarding action, then finish other waves), and a few other variations.
You also start seeing variations to the 'scan 5' missions (the one where you scan one ship, then are asked to check two more, then finally two more). Later there are sometimes guard ships and occasionally cloaked ships to ambush you.
I've also been seeing more variation on the planetary mission and in the 'exploration' missions.
I haven't made it beyond Commander, but the mission variety seems to be increasing. That could be due to level or it could be due to Cryptic continually adding variations.
The story missions are excellent if you take the time to read them.

Okay well thanks for that answer, makes sense
alot of the repeatable missions are the same but the episode content gets mixed up more
