That is Star Fleets mandate. I thought when I got this game I would be able to sit with my Star Trek technical manual and really delve into what goes into a star ship , science of planets, and other "fluff".
There is no actual scientific information, no database with real scientific information, nothing from the technical manuals. It's all just click and smash. Absolutely no thinking and I don't mean tactics. There are no mysteries , puzzles , and educational opportunities.
I would recommend the makers download a copy of star trek judgment rights, a copy of the latest technical manuals, and some take an astronomy class. Star Trek has won award for advancing science this game should be held to the same standards.
I want to at least see some mission that require some analytical skills, some math , and some knowledge of Star Trek and science.
This would figure heavily if they made time travel mission possible... the gateway anyone?
Or actual had mission where piloting the star ship was necessary IE pilot through the wormhole.
There is nothing in the quests that bring in the questions of ethics and morals in these quests.
They should at least include some fun daily facts that are actual learning opportunities in those loading screens.
This thread is open to those that seek to improve their minds while they play the game.
Q would agree that this game is brutal and stupid.
Be smart like Picard and show up the industry by going for the highest not the lowest denominator.
see the problem is Paramount defended and developed ST like it was the second coming, there was a point in time when they went around trying to shut down all the fan sites on the web, it was serious business.
now that they only retain some distribution rights, im not so sure the stringent standards we are used to still remain in force.
I don't care what people want to nit pick on this post. I'm not the developers .
I don't care if you people think I'm stupid. The end user does not matter.
The point is that the developers made a very stupid. I hit you, you hit me. I smash stuff , I collect stuff game.
I'm very sad that I spent money on the life time sub.

Until there is a mission that actually requires some thought I will not play this game anymore.
It is a pig awful brutal game. I want the minutes of my life back .
I'll sit back and play star trek judgment rights, 25th anniversary , and star fleet academy .
This game is horrible, violent, and just plain dumb .
Again people can nit pick about spelling and little nitpicks. They just cannot see into the bigger issue. I ask then to the community who is the fool?

So you played for 10 minutes before coming to this conclusion?
You have your ideas of a star trek MMO, Cryptic has thiers. Neither is right, neither is wrong.
You have you ideas of what is Star Trek, Cryptic has thiers. Niether is right, neither is wrong.
You want a Star Trek Shenmue Simulator, Crpyptuc is going for slightly traditional MMORPG.
If you are that knowledgable....and feel you can do better, please show us. Lots of great open source game engines you can use out there to make a game.
Unfortunately a lot of the analytical stuff was dropped early on. There were talks of exploring new planets and naming them, diplomacy, etc.
There IS diplomacy in that you talk to certain NPC's when other NPC's tell you to but the response to get things moving is always highlighted in green so you can skip through all the tedious storyline if you like as it makes no difference to the outcome of the mission which is linear.
There IS some heroic saving of space stations by fixing problems which involves clicking things in the order they tell you to. Sometimes bad guys try to stop you.
You did mention the point about "... The gateway anyone?" and I am not sure if you were meaning to say that it SHOULD figure heavily into that mission and it doesn't, or if you were implying that no such mission exists (not sure how far you are into your leveling). You do in fact encounter the gateway and I will leave it at that.
I was adamant a while back about Cryptic changing things but to be blunt the things I would want to see changed would basically create a completely different game. I have accepted STO for what it is, and in that limited regard I like it. (Now that I can actually connect and play for more than an hour without the server crashing for half a day.)
I blow stuff up and it sounds like Star Trek when things explode. I shoot phasers and disruptors and cannons and they make very Trek-like sounds.
Ideally i would like to see space combat as it is, and ground combat like Mass Effect 2. Having dialog choices that matter would be great.
Until there is a mission that actually requires some thought I will not play this game anymore.

Don't bother Spintronic.
In every negative thread about STO it's those same exact people bashing it, using the weakest form of retaliation to your argument by simply making personal attacks and nit-picking at things like spelling mistakes. They can't actually think and counter-act your argument with anything but useless drivel. Exactly the kind of people this game appeals to.
Sorry you spent a life-time sub, you shoulda simply used your head-start/open beta pre-order and cancelled after you'd tried it out.
Wow. You accuse the game of being stupid and ignorant but exhibit ignorance in the very first sentence.
Exploration was the mission of the Enterprise in TOS, TNG, and ENT. A mission. Only a single type of mission among many.
I mean... think about it for 5 seconds, at least.
There are over 150 planets in the Federation and it encompasses over 8,000 light years. Starfleet (one word, not two) is the Federations sole branch. Starfleet does everything.
It explores.
It keeps the peace across that vast amount of space.
It handles emergency relief actions to member worlds and colonies.
It handles the transportation of colonists and often assists in their getting established.
It conducts all the science and research.
It handles the transportation diplomats and ambassadors.
When the Federation goes to war, guess who does the fighting? That's right. Starfleet.
Starfleet has just as many ships designed for research and combat as they do exploration, if not many more.
Sounds like he wants a single player game, which maybe more suited to his liking. Actually, a simulation would be apt, that way he can calculate sling shots around the Sun.
However needless to say STO would not sale very well if you needed a 1500 page technical manual just to start the engines .
I kinda get where he's coming from, but don't agree to his extreme remedy.
Yes, a lot of the gameplay feels repetative and tedious. There is no satisfaction completing a mission.
It feels more like hoops I'm jumping through in order to get granted accessories to power up my ship.
STO is only superficially Star Trek, which isn't a surprising fact.
I've been doing quite a few Patrol and Deep Space Exploration tours, and I am finding them excessively tedious to the point where I'm feeling I'm wasting my time and money.
When I have to beam down to a planet and walk EXCESSIVELY long corridors just to tap a computer, to uncover a 'mystery' that doesn't really amount to ANY consequence whatsoever.
- Oh! This is a secret Klingon base! Oh.. nevermind, they decomissioned it because the planet went happy.
-Oh! This is a High end Science Labratory! Oh.. it failed. nevermind
Or the patrol missions which forces me to go ORBIT the entire planet to scan anomalies.
It would be nice if the game was more rewarding in an involving sense, not a soul-sucking tedious way.

And you are in every negative thread spouting the same TRIBBLE over and over again. Do you know what irony means? want the community to listen to you? then stop being arrogant and self righteous.

You won't find those things here. Maybe in a pen & paper rpg. Why would you think technical stuff about the ships, planets etc would be included? There's a wiki for that stuff. The days of detailed manuals etc.. are long gone as it's much cheaper to just give the basics and leave the rest to the tutorial.
in all honesty the OP has a right to his own opinion, so he shouldn't be flamed for it.
However, in regards to his post, this is an MMO, everyone expects this to be like Star Trek, the films, the series, the books etc. When in actual fact that would not make for good MMO, some variety is always needed, and in all honesty, war sells, whether or not I agree with it, that is the fact.
Not all of ST was about discovering new life etc, that was just the main principal. I would estimate that kirk, picard, janeway, sisco and archer all lead their crew into more battles then they ever did exploring. Why you ask? Just going about shaking hands with people would not make good TV, you would have changed the channel after the first few episodes.
The same goes for the movies, Almost everyone would have stood up and demanded their money back at the cinemas if it was all about friendly encounters. The books are the same, you would have put the first one down, and used it to prop up a table, or left it to gather dust on the shelf.
Every movie, every episode, every book, each had their fair share of battles, if not more then their fair share. Before you start saying "no I would'nt, I would have stayed to watch them / read them". Stop, think about it, how many "non-star trek" movies, tv series, or books have you missed because they looked boring? As star trek has many aspects, be it peaceful, scientific, combat, etc, you cannot say for certain that you would have passed it up if it hadn't had its fair share of battles.
The Cage had its fair share of battles, aswel as other aspects, and it was almost canned by paramount. If it hadn't reached the minds of the many, we wouldn't of know it as it is now.
Before you all get to flaming me, and calling me a fanboy or whatever it is these days, I am a fan, of Star Trek, and now of Star Trek Online. They are similar, but not the same, and I wouldn't want STO to be the exact same format as ST, it would not make for great MMO gaming.
That said, there are many things that could be added. If you have any suggestions, then cryptic have listened to people in the past regarding ideas and suggestions, why not submit a ticket with your suggestions? or post the exact nature of your idea on these boards. If they get implemented then great, if not, oh well, its not the end of the world.

I find it funny and have no remorse for all these people who "say they are lifetime" subbers (as if that distinction validates your opinions) and post rants how the game did not meet their expectations.
You had all of open beta to try the game out and lifetime offer lasted to the end of open beta. Your fault for not trying out the game before making an expensive investment decision. So I'd stamp the ignorance label on yourself, not Cryptic.
Comments
Yes, that was my first thought.
While what the op for in its entirety is not practical, I do think STO could use some more depth.
You might want to fix the spelling on that, otherwise it doesn't really work too well.
So you noticed it too, huh? xD
I would definitely love to see more sci-explore missions over the much over-used kill 10 mobs type.

At least we don't get giant rats...
But yes, more sci-explore-diplomacy missions, please!
one big problem with that......
IT'S A GAME
personally I am hoping for a "the cullture online" damnit even a culture film would do
would love to see / hear some drones and minds.
I know! You might have an idea of how bored I am with giant insects in every game... >.>

Yeah what ^^ said.
There is no way out eh? It seems like no matter how far you get in the game the depth does not increase...
Can someone prove me wrong?
What is the most thought provoking thing you have seen come out of STO?
Wow. You accuse the game of being stupid and ignorant but exhibit ignorance in the very first sentence.

I played to Lt Cmdr / 11 and have pretty much the same sentiments.
