Yes I wish there were optional player crews but I actually enjoyed my first few hours so far. I have liked how ground combat works (my short experience of it) and while the space combat felt kind of slow it was also a nice change of pace from the usual combat you get in mmo's.
I would love for there to be more to do than just combat though.... Scientific missions and such. I figure it wouldn't be so tough to add some science minigames to the game engine to facilitate the "gameplay of scientific actions".
Like that minigame from Star Trek Elite Force 2 (I think Elite Force 1 aswell). That thing where you have to "rewire" the terminal you are interacting with (as in redirect the flow of energy by turning the nodes without directing the flow into "bad" nodes that made you restart)
Or even the minigame from Mass Effect when bypassing security.
Something along those lines, or even better if anyone at cryptic thinks of something better.
Just different forms of gameplay to shake things up a bit by adding to the variety of what you are doing in game.
The game gets alot more involved the more you progress. You can actually customize your bridge crew at the recruitment area, and pick the officers and skills you want for them. You can also modify their appearance and name as well.
Just like most MMO's the going is slow at the beginning, but once you get a few levels under your belt and gain more skills for your crew, the combat gets quite a bit more strategic.
