I am sure that we all realize that unforeseen things do occur on occasion. And unscheduled downtime is necessary. However it would be beneficial to your user community if you would identify your anticipated length of downtime. Of course this is only helpful if you time and date stamp the original message. As an example it does me no good to know that the system will be down for three hours if I don't know when the three-hour started. Expecting your users to sit idly by waiting for the server light to turn green is ludicrous and certainly not indicative of good customer service.
