So I can't fly up or down but, you made missions where I need to?

I really love the game a lot and enjoy the space battles, but today I had to do a patrol mission that basically required me to fly straight down to get to the enemies I needed to kill.

Seriously, straight down.

I could not achieve enough of an angle pointing my nose down in space to to fly from one group to another, so I found myself flying tight corkscrews downward until I got to the bottom and killed the 5th mob.

Now look, I understand it's probably a lot of work to program spaceflight to be true 3D, and let us be able to do stuff like roll the ship or do loops or whatnot. But if you're going to limit the angles at which we can travel, at least design the levels so we don't have to fly insane maneuvers in order to achieve our goals.

And why don't the planets rotate?!

Dude its a bit of a pain but really not worth putting a thread up about it. just head down do a small durn and your off it doesnt effect your ability to complete missions at all it adds a few seconds to your gameplay at most.

It's still very annoying, and I agree with the OP.

I remember two very specific situations in a Fleet Action where another player needed my help, and I couldn't get to him in time to send over an engineering team because I was too busy corcscrewing to his rescue when I really should have been able to point my nose straight down and fly directly to him.

Missions aren't timed, so it's not as big a deal. But in fleet actions or PvP, it's a very, very annoying limitation.

    /agree.

On prinicpal of low-maneuverability starships only, that is. At first, I was not bothered by the idea that you cannot pitch more than X degrees from the ecliptic, since I can't recall a third person space game where you could maneuver vertically without limitations. Yet, upon captaining my cruiser, there simply isn't enough of a pitch limit to maneuver without making massive, planet-sized corkscrew turns to go up or down, thanks to the cruiser's absolutely horrendous maneuvering.

Even in EVE, the most massive battleships could turn on a dime when all-stop, but doing it in STO to maneuver is aggravating.

The whole point is that if you are going to limit the mobility and then design a level that rubs that limitation in your face, it makes the game seem like not a lot of thought was put into design.

And that doesn't make me hopeful for the future.

I had a mission (kill 5 groups next to large asteroids, obviously) where the entire thing was in an asteroid belt at a 70 degree angle DOWNWARD.

baffling. If they don't want to give full maneuverability for "gaming" reasons, fine. But the OP is right. If you're not going to let me fly DOWN, then don't put the enemies BELOW.

Bad planning. It's rare it's an issue, but it's happened enough to be troubling.

    well there was x-wing
360 degrees of motion on all axis plus axial rotation
you could pull sick manuvers, but most of the time you were trying to outturn everything

I haven't been able to fly straight down or up with the keyboard, but if I hold both mouse buttons down and point up or down I've been able to fly straight up and down with no problem.

I'm with Shadyimpala. I have never flown with my keyboard so maybe the mouse is a better option because I haven't found any limits. In fact, flying my starship is one of my favorite things about the game!
