Too much combat for me

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
OK... I am not a hardcore player. I am a CASUAL. I am finding way too many mobs every time I try to scan an asteroid. I have been playing 4 hours... just getting frustrated and angry. I expect combat at higher levels. But this is ridiculous. STO is fast losing me... Why I can't I just complete a mission without having to respawn 6 to 8 times.

I find the movement controls unwieldy and I can't run from combat. The mobs are relentless. I don't like this.

if you want casual players, this is not the way to get and keep them. I had high hopes and was excited. Now, not so much. I wish I hadn't bought the game and I doubt that I will continue after the free month. Too bad.

If I am missing something, there is no way that I can find out how to play better.

Try to get gear from the fleet actions. It really helps when doing missions after you get it. You'll be able to take on about 4 average ships at a time if you have the gear for it, and harder bosses will be a cakewalk.

Sounds like this isnt the right game for you..

Even casual players need to expect there to be combat. You should not have to respawn (die) if you are doing missions appropriate to your level. If you're having that much trouble with the controls in combat you might see what you can change about the controls to make it better for you.

I have no idea what "fleet actions" are. I can't find any information for beginning players.

I'm in the same boat... but I doubt this game will become any less combat based any time soon...

I will keep TRYING to play during my FREE month. As a WoW player for 3 years, I am not inexperienced. But there is no information. There is no help to find. I DO not to GROUP for everything.

You are correct, This may not be for me. but since I paid for the game, I intend to try. I did try to change the controls. I do not LIKE using the keyboard. I do not type so I don't have the keyboard memorized.

I keep being attacked by 5 mobs at a time. One I can handle but not 5 at one time. If there is a "newbie area" it is not clearly indicated. I have been doing the missions as they were given to me. If they are too high for me, there is no way to tell.

If this is not for casual players, they should tell you in the game info.

I have never had mobs spawn when I do a scan. It just points the way to data samples for Memory Alpha.

Why? Honestly it sounds like you are doing something wrong. I haven't died once in from when I started to Lt Commander where I am now. Also there is no death penalty really.

You can escape from combat, I do it all the time. In ground combat you can sprint away from mobs. In space, turn opposite the ship, put your shields on rear, and change you power levels to speed to gain distance from them.

maybe the SIMS would be a better fit... There is no more combat than any other game. Do you want to collect 10 X and deliver them somehwere?

It is your tatics that is not correct. or you just suck. cause i take on the same and kill them with ease though it takes time. Check to make sure you have your skills set and bridge officers are a key too.

The tutorial, where you are taught the commands from the popup windows, get your bridge officer, fight the borg spheres, etc is the newbie area.

Sure there is. When you open your journal to see your quests all the quests have a level indicator next to them tell the rank and level of the rank that the mission is.

Also when you fight a mob it tells you its level compared to yours in a little circle to the left of the image for it when you target it.

I'm pretty casual too...you can go to options and adjust key binds. make the controls however you want them...i did! you can run soon enough from mobs if you're about to die with a power given to you called evasive maneuvers. don't worry there's two things happening here. The game is kinda not just perfect yet from being so new. The first 10 or so levels in any game is really just a getting started point, dunno how many MMO's you've played before. It gets more fun the more you can do tho usually. Don't worry it's fun once you get used to it. Seriously take a look at your keybinds and change them to something better for you.

yes, I agree I am doing something wrong. BUT WHAT!?!?! There is no help to find. When I start a scan, enemies start attacking and then I am dead in space. I cannot move. I am stopped. If I CAN move I do, but they follow and kill me. I can't get far enough away for them to lose interest. I have only done one ground mission. Where are more?!?!

Why isn't there more helpful info?!?!

    L2P noob is not helpful.

Im not sure where you are doing missions at. Try Hailing Starfleet for so new ones. I have found this game way to easy so far. Haven't died yet and I was just thinking there were not enough things to fight in most regions.

And you played WoW for 3 years? Umm.. WoW is all combat.

Someone recommended Fleet Actions for a player who thinks there's too much combat already? *chuckles*

I think the combat is fine... I just think they are going to learn the hard-way that you need detailed and abundant non-combat activities to keep a person paying for a MMO game...

Otherwise it's tokens in an arcade game... =) (if those even still exist =D)

I suspect the first significant wave of unsubscribers (not including the plain -old hot-heads, because they'll leave no matter what you do) are going to be people looking for something more substantial than a shoot-em-up with memory like they could have had on their X-Box 1... =D

I predict that Cryptic is going to rush towards end-game content (which is always a euphemism for macho PvP stuff) to placate those people (undeservedly) and in that race, they are going to neglect the expansion of non-combat activities... That's gonna cost them...

I think you need to adjust your power settings and learn to use you shield distribution buttons more. Knowing how to put more power to a shield that is going down fast is essential to survival. You really should not be having such a hard time in the missions. they are set up for you to be able to solo them if that's how you wish to play.

    the buttons are:
    delete to balance shields
    up arrow for front
    Down arrow for rear
    left arrow for left shield
    right arrow for right shield

Use these keys, they keep you alive!

    Hope this helps.

umm fight back.... they have the game set to easy... its nearly impossible to lose. You cant run away. Scanning whatever is just an excuse to engage you in combat.

You're pretty f-ing ignorant. I tried to help you and gave honest and as helpful of answers as I could to your questions. You are the one that's hostile. I didn't tell you to L2P, I told you how to tell what level quests were, how to run from combat in ground AND in space, I told you how to tell what level mobs were, what else do you want?!!

When ever a mission starts you are always in a safe area away from mobs unless it is possibly a deep space encounter or fleet action. Scanning DOES NOT bring mobs down upon you, maybe you just dont know the term for what you are actually doing yet.

I hope you quit, I'm done helping you, let these other people deal with your attitude.

no more than likely they will dumb it down even more - and drive off real gamers - to suit crappy players and give us cutesy animated companions and silly emotes...

Cryptic hasnt ever done an end game so I doubt they even know what that is.

Yes, I do use these keys. I have equipped batteries and other things. I have two BOs, one tactical and one engineering. I am reading tooltips and making intelligent decisions. ( at least in MY opinion.) I have been playing CRPGs since 1986 and MMOs since EQ.

I have talked to the Fleet officers and they have offered missions to kill more mobs. I have talked to people on the space station. I have pressed every button and read every message.

    To original poster:

Learn to manage your ship, power levels, redistribute shields, your captain and bridge officer powers. Get better ship gear, upgrade your skills to become better at things etc., use situational awareness in combat, maneuver your camera and visually check for enemies.

From all the missions I have done so far, there never was a time when I was just doing a scan and "oops" enemies spawn on top of me, they are there from before if you look, I don't understand what you could be doing wrong. This game has very easy non-challenging combat at earlier levels.

You are missing something. I've been able to solo any mission in any ship type w/o an issue - even if the ships are +3 or +4 to me. It all has to do with the skills you train yourself in and your boffs. This is an MMO so it will be HIGHLY combat driven. Hence why it's set in a time of war. This game is not going to be mostly the peace loving ST TV shows we are used to. It will be about 80% combat.

And yes you can run from combat EASILY.

Route all power to engines, use evasive maneuvers (or engine battery pack), and you will zip right out of the 10km range.. and just keep going.

You can also run away on the ground as well... put all people in passive and sprint

It would help to know what you are trying to do. Using the scan is for after a mission, just do the quest, then scan for anomalies. If you are doing sector patrol, it is only combat and nothing else. If you are doing the missions, they have a few other things to do.

With the UI, use nuber 3 of the 3 options. It will give you 3 rows to fill with skills so you can use your mouse and not the keyboard if you want. Press the "P" key to see all your skills. You can grab each skill and drop it into one of the open spots so you can click it to activate it. It will also tell you what it does.

Protect your shields and right click on both your phaser symbols to turn them green for auto-fire. When you are within 10km of a mob, it will fight you. Watch your distance. When you get within 10km, hit the space bar and you will continue to fire phasers on auto til the mobs are dead. Just play with it. It is simple once you figure out auto fire and balance shields.

Good luck and if you need help in game. Just send me a tell. I am Skylan@Skylan. I hope thing turn around for you. It is anfun game once you get the hang of it.

I think I know the type of mission you are talking about, its one where you are supposed to scan 5 asteroids or some such thing. A few things to keep in mind, the instances scale to the number of people on your team. I see you said you weren't teamed, but just wanted to point that out. I was auto'd on to a team of 5, but three were not there so it was a pain and ended up dropping it and doing it again.

Everyone has said it, but watch the power levels, when you go to full impulse, it drains your other systems, so you may want to slow down before you are in range of the enemies to get your weapons and shields topped off.

Take it slow. I have found going after the smaller ships first is a very good idea, lowers the total damage you are taking.

You may also want to open up the teaming for the stuff in the very beginning, tons of people doing them and it does help with getting through the first bit until your BOs have their skills up. I tend to max out the skills for space combat for my tactical officer first, then max out emergency power to shields, not saying that is the way to go, but seems to have worked for me so far.

If it seems to be just one mission, maybe if you can give us the mission name, we may be able to provide more help.

I am sorry if my replies have been taken as attacks. It is my frustration speaking.

I have tried everything everyone has mentioned. I am not an inexperienced player.

I mission I am trying to do is to scan for some kind of ore. I was going top try to get the exact name but the server is down. I do a space scan and I get a message that there are three anomalies in the area. I fly around and see red dots on the minimap. I try to fly the other way. I keep flying and find an anomaly and start to scan it. Then I am attacked. I try to fly away but the ship will not move. I press every button I can but no movement. I balance shields, I click my engineer BO I start firing weapons. I am attacked by five enemies and I am pressing balance, extra power, extra shields, firing, balancing, trying to move, balancing, firing.... kill a mob, and then die.

    Rinse repeat.

Again, I did not intend to insult or attack any poster... well maybe one. I appreciate the attempts at help. But I have tried all those things already.

Ok first try the following tactic:

Right click on the two phaser icons on your toolbar. They should turn green then. (I think they are at position 1 and 3 at the beginning)

Approach enemies, watch how far they are away. Hit TAB until one is within 10 km range.

Then press spacebar while you are moving to the enemies. Your front phaser should now fire at the target.

    It should fire automatically.

Press cursor up to recharge your front shields (indicated by the arrow under your front shield indicator glowing)

When you hear the message "enemies shields are down" hit 2 to fire your photon torpedo.

If one target goes down, hit space again to attack the next target. Try to get the target in your front arc to be able to fire the photons as soon as its shields are down.

At low level combat this should work.
