So i just got home an hour ago statred up sto ang got a 10 gb patch. this is weird because the game is only 2 gigs. does any one know hat this is for???
I got it from direct2drive and it says 8.2gbs only thing I can think of is its the game itself and maybe the patch or a preorder thing you need to download as well.
this happened to me when i renamed the directory
if you have done this you will need to modify a registry key for the path to the game, its in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Star Trek Online\

The game download is 7.76 GB compressed, 10 GB uncompresed.
Patches range from 50 MB to 400 MB.. currently I have not seen one smaller than 58 MB and not one larger than 387 MB.
If you are downloading again, then either your game corrupted badly and the verifier decided to reinstall, or something on your system deleted the game directory (Steam has done this.. maybe D2D now?).
Renaming / moving the directory will do this as well.
If possible, use a File download like File Planet so that you can get a zip of the game. Split the archive into 2 parts and burn to 2 DVD disks for your own physical copy of the game installer.
This avoids problems with Control Centers like Steam or D2D. Personally I hate those things since they "Control" your games and systems when installed through them. I like the control in my hands and not theirs.

If you want to use a true game lobby, Gamespy Arcade. Steam tries to put too much into 1 system.. same for D2D.. so when they patch the game on their end, it uninstalls and then you have to re-download all over again. That means you have no control. So your all in one game lobby just cost you 4 to 6 hours of gaming time. Yep, that is the reason I won't touch those things. I use a 3rd party client to patch into their comms system to connect with my friends who plays games using those systems. I won't lower the quality of my computer with programs like those.
sounds like you already have the d2d download still right?
if you do, stop the current download.
now you have 2 choices, uninstall stol and reinstall it, or try simply reinstalling over the existing copy, and then try playing again, this way you should only dl about 500mb of patches and not the whole thing
there may be a fixable issue, but I'll bet this way will get you playing faster

stop now and try and find out more
What made you think the game was only 2 gigs?
Also where is the download comming from, have heard about steam bugs redownloading stuff before.
You are correct sir.
