When I first started playing it didn't seem like the replicator could do much, but now it seems to be able to replicate a lot of the items I've picked up on away missions. Is this the way it works? If I get something in my inventory then it can replicate it? I'm confused about it because it doesn't seem like it can replicate the essential things - provisions or medical supplies, etc.

That's not what he was asking. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to his question. I've only used it for selling and haven't really paid much attention to what I can buy from it.
You cant use the replicator to buy provisions or medical supplies for the exploration missions. You use it like a portable vender with reduced sell prices and can buy the basic stuff like food and batteries. and no you can't replicate/clone something you already have lol

That's terribly unfortunate. The neat thing about the replicators in Star Trek was that you could replicate something you already have...it just took time and energy. Such a pity!

Think about it. I find a item worth 1000 credits if I sell it. I replicate/duplicate it, and sell it, make another sell, now a few hours later I have over 750,000 energy credits! im rich for a very long time
When I first started playing in beta, the replicator was used to satisfy the requirements for certain missions. Those where the inhabitants of planets wanted certain goods to complete the mission.
Now the replicator is used to produce food and of course to sell things without returning to spacestation.
Unfortunately in exploration missions there are still some of these missions that require replicator goods to complete. I dont think they are completable now. Unless you happen to be carrying around enough of these goods to complete the mission. Those goods now drop as loot and are available for purchase from certain NPC vendors so it is possible you may have the goods but not very likely.

No, that's just silly. It would cost you 1000 energy to recreate something that is worth 1000 energy, of course. You wouldn't make any money - but you WOULD be able to replicate something you found and couldn't buy...like a MKII Quantum torpedo launcher.

And if you sold it on the exchange you would get considerably more. At least until the market is flooded with replicated Quantium Torpedo Launchers.

Exactly the point! I have to abandon my missions to run away and find a freighter in order to buy (with energy) provisions, medical supplies, etc. I should just be able to replicate these things on site. It is like someone really overlooked the essential function of the replicator along the way.

A) The mission doesn't abandon if you leave the system. Don't do it. It ends up costing hundreds of credits to finish that mission, and you get like 200 as a reward. That's the entire mission, btw. It ends when you give them their free stuff.

Dont do that! The chance of getting that same mission again are not good.
I think this was an oversight on the devs part. They should have removed these missions when they changed the function of the replicator.
No, it works. Just leave the system, find a freighter, then go back. It will give you a "Continue blah blah mission" button in the lower right.
That hasnt worked for me but I am not going 100 parsects out of my way to get some trash commodities and return. I can do 3 exploration missions in the time it would take.

Its still tedious...there's no reason I should not be able to replicate provisions and medical supplies, etc. There is no rational reason as to why I can't spend the 100 credits in my own replicator to replicate something as generic as "provisions". We know this is a canon-level function, ST: TNG, DS9 and VYGR have all done exactly that.

It takes energy credits and turns them into items (buying). You can only buy a few things, such as hypos and food, however.
Also, you are generally better off selling the goods to an npc. I use the replicator on lower value items when my inventory is full.
Note that some NPCs have better prices than others; compare a Ferengi trader to merchants at Space Dock or on Andoria, for example.

Actually exploration missions do 'abandon' when you leave the mission (now, didnt used too).

If you could replicate your own items so could everyone else and this means the exchange prices would only ever go down...capitalism at its finest.

I think you need to bone-up on Capitalism. Especially the finer points of supply and demand.
Why...is there some part of it that confuses you?
The replicator has a lot of potential, though, in my opinion.
I suggested its use as part of a crafting system that would fit well within the IP.

Not that one. I did it last night.
