PvP Solution involving no nerfs

I'm not saying that anything is inherently broken, merely that with this volume of people complaining, they percieve that something is broken. Thusly, I propose a solution.

Each Faction (Federation or Klingon) has their own winning goals for the battle.

Think about it; each faction has their own playstyle, their own unique abilities, why do they go into a battle with the same goals?

Here I will propose one such scenario:

Federation must defend their starbase from the Klingon assault force.

A Federation starbase is under attack, defend it until reinforcements arrive!

Winning Objectives:
  • Federation: A large Federation fleet is moving towards the homing beacon, reinforce the beacon to guide the fleet in.
  • Klingon: Attackers must disable the homing beacon by destroying 15 starships.
  • If the Beacon is not fully powered after X minutes the Fleet assumes the starbase was lost (Klingons win by default).
The map is setup with a centralized Beacon. Federation players spawn at a starbase on one side of the map that is defended by turrets (to prevent Klingons from spawn camping). Klingons spawn on the opposite side of the Beacon, there are no turrets here, if Federation spawn camps the Klingons they lose due to the mechanics of the scenario.

The general idea here is that the map will play like 2 different scenarios simultainiously.

The Federation are playing a capture and hold map. They must secure the beacon, and hold it while the counter counts down. As long as there are federation ships at the beacon, if there are no Federation ships the countdown is halted.

The Klingons are playing a deathmatch map. Their goal is to destroy Federation ships before the countdown reaches 0 and the full Federation fleet arrives.

After some arbitrary time the Klingons will win be default to prevent "respawn griefing." (Klingon respawn or cloak griefing is prevented due to the fact that Federation players will win due to the capture and hold mechanic).

The benefit of this type of scenario is that it plays to each Factions strengths. Klingons get to do what Klingons do best, they cloak, go in, kill some ships, and get out, not having to worry about sticking around and holding a capture point. Federation gets to do what they do best, they camp a location, relying on their more defensive ships to be able to hold the line.

Now some of you may be crying foul at those last two sentences, "What do you mean Federation are supposed to be defensive and Klingon are supposed to be offensive!?!"

Well, look at ship stats and abilities.

Klingons have lower hull, use high DPS directional weapons, are more maneuverable, and can cloak, deciding when and where combat takes place. This gives them a distinct advantage in deathmatch scenarios.

Federation ships have higher hull, use large angle weapons, are less maneuverable, and have more console and officer slots than Klingons. This gives them a distinct advantage at camping and capture and hold scenarios.

Problems this solution solves:

Cloak can no longer be considered over powered. The only thing cloaking does for Klingons is lets them sneak up on Fed players, which is the design intent of cloaking. By cloaking they give Federation players more points as a cloaked ship can't contribute to the countdown mechanic.

Griefing ceases. Players that don't hit respawn are only hurting their own team, Klingons lose if they stay dead, Federation loses if they stay dead. Klingons that stay cloaked give the win to Federation players.

The only remaining problem is cross feeding. Feds can cross feed Klingons, due to Klingons needing kills, but Klingons can't reciprocate by feeding Feds. Cross feeding should be considered a bannable offense, there is no reason to go into a battle without a shield fitted.

Federation Escorts aren't as useful. Due to Federation not needing kills to win, Escorts wouldn't be as useful in scenarios like this, however rewards would still scale based on damage and kills, so escorts would still be a viable risk/reward choice. You may not contribute as much, or might even cause the team to lose, but if your team wins, you get a larger % of the rewards.

Benefits of this solution:

It can be implemented almost instantly. All the mechanics are already in place to do this, the only thing that remains would be balancing of the X amount of time before the match is automatically given to the Klingons to prevent respawn griefing.

Forces some semblance of tactics. Federation players have a safe spawn point where they can group up and strategize before heading out, because Federation players can't lose by waiting a little while (short of stalling the game and causing Klingons to win by default) the speed of combat is slowed down to allow for strategies. Klingons meanwhile seem to have an innate ability to group up and work as a team, and the fact that there is mechanics in place to prevent spawn camping still allows them to cloak and group up.

What are your thoughts on the idea? When coming up with this I felt as if I had an epiphany, all of our problems are solved, but I've likely overlooked something, so please share your comments. Hopefully we can get Cryptic to implement something like this and the nerf complaints will stop!

I realize there are a lot of words in this post, and that may be offputting to some, but comments anyone?

I'd love to see more scenerio PvP, not for balance but it's just funier in my opinion to have say a capture the flag or king of the kill type match then just a death match. There is some of that now, but it doesn't seem to be working as well as it could.

I think it would be more fun, and more naturally balanced. As I said, Klingons and Federation are fundamentally not designed to be identical, it's silly to have them try and do identical objectives in PVP.
