so wait, you're doing something about names before you deal with goldspam?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
so let me get this straight, I get flagged for the character name meanwhile i have 4 goldspams with the subject STOGOLD from player name dfhtyytfdf (the same player who has been spamming me since launch)

as far as my name goes.. yeah sure, its a fair cop and now i can change it for free

but ffs guys, lets get some priorities around here.
police the spammers... names can come when we can actually see them through all the spam.

from what Stormshade said they are pretty open about naming, he has the USS Lollypop for goodness sakes, so whatever name you picked *had* to be something way bad for them to slap you with the change it command.

edit: not *too* bad a name really, though I think sentences are a no-no on the naming convention and that's certainly close enough to one to be an issue... but I honestly wouldn't know, I've never broken a naming convention in any MMO I've played in (and that's a fair amount...)

I was going to say that these are both being handled, etc, except I saw a gold spammer on my ignore list, that I added with the REPORT SPAM BUTTON, online two days after I reported him.

    Which is wtf.

Use Lt. Cmdr. Tacitly Endorsed Gold Spammer as your new name. You can captain the U.S.S. Indifference.

I think they are letting do their craft. See how they are doing it and once the have all the info they need they will destroy them. It is damn annoying but I don't think they want a half-TRIBBLE solution to this issue.

based on your sig, it's pretty obvious why your name had higher priority.

copyright infringement vs gibberish name gold seller

guess which could potentially cost cryptic more if they don't take action on it?

that being said, yeah, gold spammers are frikkin annoying

Yeah, that's true. There's the one action per day quota on gm's. That's a hard rule to get around.

bet no one can find a single instance of someone getting hit for infringement for a forum name or ingame name when a 3rd party holds the rights.

but thats all besids the point, its the rules, and I'm not arguing if they are correct in making me change it, actually i expected it, but I wasnt about to pay good credits to do it myself :)

but this early in the game, its for the greater good to cut down on the spam and the illegal trade of THEIR OWN property above protecting the rights of someone who couldnt care less.

Maybe they are working on both?
Maybe the goldspam , because it involves in game mailings, is more complex?

Or, maybe Cryptic should call you personally and justify every decision they make, since you obviously know more about their product than they do.

PS your name is a big sign of the actual problem here. Let us know what your new name will be, I'd love to report you for that one too :)

Complicated to ban an account that is reported for gold spamming and that they can readily see is gold spamming? The complaint isn't that they aren't implementing a technical solution to block the spam. It's that they are getting reports of spammers and the accounts are still actively spamming us days later...

The person changing your idiotic bad name is not the same person that codes, and it will take some coding to fix the gold spammer problem efficiently.

The person changing his name IS the same person who can also ban gold sellers accounts, though. That's just a given.

oh, so GMs have no ban button?
3 mmos and they didnt implement a manual ban system?
I can pull a sql query against the mail DB for STOGOLD in about 20 seconds and build up a list of names in about 30.
sure coding takes longer, were not asking for faster code, were asking for faster action, we are handing them the smoking gun daily and still they go on with some long term plan... great.. glad they are working on it, but we need relief NOW

I do find this thread jucily ironic.

Only yesterday were you complaining that you had seen other people with 'your' name and we did point out to you then that you werent actually allowed to use 'your' name.

On the other side of it - it certainly wasnt me who reported you - I dont even get the TV/movie/whatever referance from your character name.

You really do not know how *bad* these guys can be! Well, I was using "Zaphod Beeblebrox" for awhile captaining the U.S.S Heart of Gold (and and then captaining the U.S.S Disaster Area) and then changing the first ship into something like U.S.S Heart of Glass so I could give my new Tier 3 ship the "U.S.S. Heart of Glass". I even made it to Tier 4 and was going to rename my first Disaster Area ship, but let's not go into that.

I even had my crew of Dent, Ford, Trillian, and Marvin following me around.

And you know what Cryptic did? They closed the WHOLE GAME and WIPED the servers because of what I did! YES, THEY DID!

(I am as surprised as you are reading these words!)

So, just count yourself lucky, Mr. Zaphod Beeblebrox the second from another pan-galactic dimension, because YOU got a re-name and *I* had to sit at a Restaurant at the END of the Universe when they wiped the servers because of ME!

(Of course, one could argue it was the End of Closed Beta but I deny ANYONE to refute that claim! It was all my fault for ruining the galactic economy with my policies of free fish for dolphins!)

(EDIT PS : And now I see one guy saying it was "Your Name" when I clearly came first. Tsk-Tsk. For shame! :p )

Yea, it is frustrating. Every MMO has this problem for some reason. You would think by now that some genius would write a server side filter and monitor that would automatically detect these spammers, and deal with them.

At least give me regular expression chat filtering and the ability to receive tells from only friends.

Trademarks and copyrights are a no no.

    Sorry.

And btw, you do realize that they have different GMs handling different things, right? It's not like it's just one guy over there. They are working on dealing the with the gold farmer problem. Just keep reporting those Mails you get as spam. They will get to them.

If a GM can use Red Dwarf for naming inspiration I would think HHGG would be just as fine.

Not sure if it was you swag-nyc but I did see that same name and ship in a fleet action the other day.
