I'm loving the game and only Lvl 5, but unless I get foolish in a fleet action I'm never in danger of having my shields depleted.
I don't want this to be a ball-breakingly hard game, but it seems to diminish the importance of uprading your ship and BOs if nothing can crack your shields in solo missions.
So, am I just encountering the newb AI right now? Do things get more challenging as you get to higher grades/ranks?
I feel silly, because as it stands I can slow my ship to a crawl and just blast everything head-on.

it takes a while.. in beta they dropped the difficulty a bit.. IMO it was taken too far but it is what it is.
I'm Lt. Cmdr grade 4 and things are just now really denting my shields but only if I'm not paying attention.. but I will admit taking on three +4 rated birds of prey can get *REALLY* interesting (and fun).
I am almost through Lt Commander and I am noticing a difference. With decent equipment and proper skill use I do not die much, but I suspect that this would be different with "stock" equipment.
Is possible to die does not equal challenge.
Oh how I yearn for what it was like in Open Beta. Now that kept you awake.
agreed.. open beta pre-difficulty nerf was an edge-of-seat combat experience. I know *WHY* they did it.. since it was so hard in fleet actions the person to get initial aggro was violently introduced to the concept of his individual atoms going on separate vacations... but it was still fun.
I'm level 14 right now, and I only had my first tough battle yesterday with a Romulan ship at the end of the "Under Cover of Night" quest. It took a number of quick deaths before I was able to come up with an effective strategy. Unfortunately, everything else has been extremely easy so far.
Don't worry. Things do get quite...interesting when you reach level 16+. When you start fighting Romulans and Hirogen you might find yourself yearning for the old days.
I'm a Commander Grade 2 at the moment. It seems my shields tend to come down fairly regularly, now. Romulans using the same powers we use (Attack Pattern Alpha, Evasives, etc) and taking on three Birds-of-Prey at once or a couple D'deridex Battleships. It can get interesting, but my hull rarely dips below 60% unless I'm really not paying attention.

It's good to let your atoms get some alone time. I miss the fiery deaths.

Somewhere around level 8 to 10.

Beta was much, much harder.

I think I am about Lt Commander 8 or so.
I have not really been keeping track
Oh.. you'll definitely start using those more. It's the best part.
If you have a BO who's abilities you don't find useful, switch him out for another one.
