I know you can minimize the chat, but for the other stuff I just rearrange my HUD setup and move things out of the way, and then reset it after.
So I too would like to know if this can be done. :)

I also need to know this. We're making a fleet movie and it would be nice to be able to hide the UI.

    Someone please answer us. :(

Whenever I take a screen shot, there is no UI in the picture stored on my hard drive.
I don't know how to hide the UI, so captured video will probably still have it.

ALT-F12 is the default keybind to hide the UI while playing.

I believe you can change this in your Key Binds game options menu.

    ===

Default screenshots (using the PrintScreen keyboard key, or /screenshot) take screenshots with the UI hidden by default.

In order to take screenshots with the UI displayed, use:

    /screenshot_ui

    or

    /screenshot_ui_jpg

You can bind this to a key:

    /bind <key> screenshot_ui_jpg
    /bind b screenshot_ui_jpg

I used the Print Screen key on my keyboard and got a picture with the UI included, so that doesn't seem to be the deafault setting, and I haven't adjusted any of the settings.

Was this a screenshot produced by a third-party screenshot program (i.e., independent of the game client)? Otherwise, the game client defaults to hide the UI when it takes its own screenshot, but only if there is no intefering/conflicting third-party screenshot application.

If you had no third-party screenshot application, then I would suggest to bug report this, because the PrintScreen key should be bound to /screenshot (not /screenshot_ui) by default.

I don't know Matt, the screen shots I get are taken simply by pressing the Print Screen key on my keyboard while in game, which I imagine is connected directly to my OS, which is XP Home.

This sounds like the interference of a third-party screenshot program.

In which case, you can always use the console commands to achieve any specific screenshot you need (produced exclusively by the game client):

    /screenshot
    /screenshot_ui
    /screenshot_ui_jpg

The first one should hide the UI. If it does not, then I recommend bug reporting it.

That's a great help thanks and much appreciated, I should be able to get some awesome pics without the UI now.

In reguards to the screenshot button producing screenshots with ui I do tech support and some versions of xp (depending on build and service pack) will screenshot with the printscreen button and put a screenshot in your pic or docs folder but even if thats the case you should still get the defaulted screenshot w/o ui in the root game folder I forget the path but then screenshots folder. Are you getting the pic with UI in the game screenshots folder or in one of your documents folders?

I press the Print Screen key on my keyboard in game and then open GIMP and paste the image from the buffer into the editing software, so I can then edit, then save in any format.

I haven't checked if the Print Screen key automatically saves the images in a folder, I wouldn't know where to look, but I can definately tell you that the images do not automatically save in the STO screen shots folder.

Forgive me, I accidently gave you the wrong info and now feel silly, see I just checked my "screenshots" folder in the "Playtest" folder.

There are numerous screen shots from when I was testing in the Tribble Server, I just never realised that they were automatically saved there, and they are all without the UI.

Somehow, when pasting from the buffer into GIMP, the image keeps the UI in the pic.

Excellant news. Now all I need is to be able to go FULL 1st person in space and ground to hide my cameraman.

For screen shots just using the Print Screen key on your keyboard automatically removes the UI from the screen shot. You shouldn't need to hide the UI unless you are taking the long way about taking screen shots and pasting them into a paint program.

Screen shots taken using Print Screen will appear in your screenshots folder inside your STO folder which can be found inside your Cryptic folder on your C drive. I always create a shortcut to this folder in my Pictures folder for ease of use.

For video recording you definitely want to use the Alt+f12 method.
