Why does everyone have thier character name plus thier Handle? What about when you want to make an alt and not have everyone in the galaxy know it is you? lol
I'm no expert, but I would imagine it would be so you could always name your character whatever you wanted. You'd be pretty ticked if your name was taken minutes before by someone else.

I guess. I have never seen an MMO before that annouced to everyone else who your alts were. But so far this seems like a cartoon/disney type of game so maybe they designed it with children in mind.
why are you worried about having the same rep across all your toons?
personally it saves me from having to name all my alts and main on different variations of the same name. and i don't have tot ell people "hey it's me dirtyklingon!" and have them worry about me trying to scam or dupe them somehow cuz they're not sure if it's really me or not.
For one thing, it deters griefers from anonymously spamming insults and/or derogatory comments. Also, you 'friend' and 'ignore' by the account. I must say, I prefer this method. I've met too many morons in games.

They do the exact same thing in Guild Wars. when you joined a guild the first toon that you got accepted with is the name that is tagged to all of your alts. And you could only be in one guild no matter hwo many alts you had. I have also noticed that when a person on yoru friends list logs in it jsut says that the account is online and doesnt' say which toon they are playing.
Perhaps I want more than one character in different guilds. Maybe a Fed guild and a Klingon Guild. Though from what I see this is mostly set up so kids can find each other quickly. Game reminds me of a disney chat program my children use,
I am just used to adult MMOs lol You should try some

or like I said..it's a way to deter griefers, idiot trollers, and all around someone hiding on an alt or remaking a character after ninja-looting/clearing a fleet bank/some other form of idiocy...so that they can't get away with it and then hide.
honestly I think it's a good thing...there are times I 'd like to "hide" on an alt when I don't feel like dealing with fleet/friends/etc and just wanna chill..but overall...the pro's outweigh the con's

yess!! this is what makes this system the most superior thing that cryptic has ever accomplished ^^
being able to block gold sellers by account! genius
that and being able ot chat to friends who are playing other cryptic games
i.e. when i'm playing champions online my friends from STO can message me and say they want to group up. and vice versa

you can turn it off if you don't want to see other people's handle.
They do the exact same thing in Guild Wars. when you joined a guild the first toon that you got accepted with is the name that is tagged to all of your alts.
And just like in guild wars, this game is entirely instanced too... with a monthly price tag.

Amen to this. When I first saw it in Champions I was surprised, then quickly pleased as 1)I found my friends easier when they were on their alts 2)I could ignore not only 1 d-bag, but all that d-bag's alts as well in one fell swoop.
It does encourage you to be at least a _little_ more mindful of your own actions, as you're not as readily anonymous as other MMOs.

Non sequitur. How, exactly, are you equating a lack of total anonymity with childishness? You might as well say the game is childish because it includes the color red. I accuse you of failing at logic.

Exactly, and on top of that, it allows character names to be non-unique, which greatly reduces the amount of names with multiple accents/special chars/wrong spelling. At the end of the day, I much more prefer people without imagination naming their chars identically "Picard" than having to see "Picard" "P

I like it this way, I once had someone harass me in another game by creating alt after alt till my ignore list was full. The GMs had a devil of a job tracking the guy down to ban him, now at least if it happens here I can tell the GM the global name of the character involved and they can handel it in no time flat.

One thing I like about the system is that it allows me to keep communication with my buds that are playing in Champions while I play STO, and vice versa.

This is a hold-over from Global Friends Lists in the City of series of games. While it does force people to expose themselves (get your minds out of the gutter) it was a lot easier to add a friiend globally and be able to see them rather than have 10 names and wonder "Who the heck was that again?"
Plus, it's really nice for when I am on my Klingon character and my Fed Fleetmates want to ask me something. No need to run around and tell everyone to look for Nayr S'eepol too.
Of course, the flipside is that you end up with duplicate names. I was quite surprised to see someone using Kail as their char name. Been using that name on and off since...1992 or so? Heck there's actually some 23 year old in the UK who's myspace is Arius Kail, a character name I'd been using also since around 1992 for various MUD/MUSH/old text based multi environments. Small world eh?

Cant you just set yourself to anonymous? Someone may know better, but I assume that makes it so no one knows when you log on maybe, so unless you sent them a /tell, your friends shouldn't know.
Could be wrong on that and I'd hope someone would correct me if I am, but I haven't tried it.

seeing the handle makes sure everyone KNOWS who you are so that if you act like an A-hole you can't hide behind some alt because you're bored.
Memories of a guy named Tuub on the Dragonblight server in WoW come to mind
Some reason you feel like hiding from everyone?
That doesn't mean they can't see yours, which I think is the problem the OP has.

BINGO!
and that's why using the @global to keep players honest is so awesome.
bottom line, don't be a jerk and it won't be a problem.
My thoughts exactly.
