What are them? They seen to connect all the systems in the sector map. But what the hell are they there for? Just to further distance us from the clean space look?
Don't mind them either, but wouldn't mind the option to turn them off. The video settings in this game are extensive, but they skipped the simpler things like turning several effects of. To me that is a -1.
If they are useless they shouldn't be there. Is like dancing with a pineaple straped to your head.
They're not even space lanes or what have you, at least, not all of them. In whatever sector block the Argelius system is in... there's this black thing on the map, looks like a cloud, and one of the paths spirals into it.
I think they are pictorial representations of the transwarp networks that the Federation figured out and implemented in something, something year (see back story).
Again pictorial representations as I have, like other posters thought, if you flew into them you speed along to its destination, alas no, you have to enable that transwarp icon from your powers menu.
I always assumed that the grid, the lanes or even the asteroids in system space where here to help the player to realize that he is actually going forward, and not just stuck.
I perceive it as a comgen representation of interstellar space. It's a little like using Satnav in a car instead of looking at the windscreen.
Considering we're only interested in a small percentage of solar systems (the inhabited ones) any attempt to actually represent interstellar space would be incredibly confusing and clustered. And unless we were all running supercomputers would possibly be less than smooth to view. Also, on a galactic scale, solar systems are tiny and would be hard to find.
On another note I keep reading complaints about the slow warp speed in the game. I'm happy to be corrected but I'm pretty certain that warp 7 (which is what my little noobie ships flies around at) is 1000 time the speed of light.

Point!
It would be very disorienting too if there wasn't anything around.
The blue lines in space in Star Trek terminology are "Warp Space Corridors", which are effectively areas of space that are commonly traveled routes between star systems in a sense are similar to what many pilots call "Sky Highways" where the amount of travel gradually reduces the air density making it more economical to travel as well as reducing unpredictable turbulance within the Corridor itself.
In the Star Trek Universe, in the mid 2250s the damaged caused to normal space by these warp space corridors became so great within Federation space that Starfleet forced speed restrictions on starships to Warp 5 unless it was an emergency to reduce the damage to space.
In 2280s the Excelsior TransWarp project although originally intended to create a Warp Drive capable of achieving any speed across Warp instantly, to make the drive possible an entirely new variation of Space Restoration Matrix was developed. TransWarp itself was considered a failure as it required far more power to achieve warp flight but the new SRM was found to not to cause the same subspace damage to space and as such was installed on all new starships with a major retrofit overhaul to the entire Starfleet.
Allowing their ships to have an increase in their cruising speeds.
But this said, yeah they are horribly ugly things in space.
It would be very disorienting too if there wasn't anything around.
Yeah, I've found a couple of near empty instances while exploring (the only thing in them is the local star and an asteroid base 100 km out) and it's near impossible to get a sense of movement until you get in visual range of the base.

well, i'm willing to go with the Federation Transwarp network.
At one point we do an episode where you must lay mines near a federation transwarp gate, so it stands to reason that not all roads lead to rome.
You could put a transwarp gate inside the sectors that ARE in the "highways", enter one of the sectors then enter the gate. Then you'd be sent to sector map where your ship would automatically fly through those lanes at incredible speed toward the next system on the lane.
What are them? They seen to connect all the systems in the sector map. But what the hell are they there for? Just to further distance us from the clean space look?
They're ugly. Anyone disagrees with my opinion?
I was told their actually for the story and missions. As you follow them from point A to point B its supposed to guide you to your next stop.

Nah, i don't think that is the case. Missions like City on The Edge of Never you exit the first system to head for the Gateway system, and they aren't linked. And thats one example of many
Yup, what i thought as well. I hope they add some functionality or purpose to them though. Adding something just "for the looks" is wrong.
I don't see how. A lot of things are just for looks. If you took away everything that was not for a specific purpose you would live in a very boring and depressing world.

Actually what is boring and depressing for some is calming and inspiring for others That's called spartan decor
But really, those things stand out like bad teeth, they ought to do something.. eventually

I was noticing that the order I get patrol and storyline missions does seem to generally follow the big lines.
Of course, whether they're trade routes, warp highways, or whatever, nothing explains the spiral into a giant black hole in the bottom of the map in the Regulus block (or wherever it is). I'd like to see somebody explain that.
Im guessing the black hole thingy in regulus may link to somewhere else in time? but doesnt at present (I tried )
As to the lines, well I like alot of folks assumed they would be high speed travel lanes (quite handy if you need to go a long way for a mission if they were).
I dont mind the look of them, in fact I would go so far as to say I acutally LOVE the look of sector space in general but:
1) I'd love to be able to navigate sector space from the bridge (ie have it on teh viewscreen or some such, that would just be cool)
2) Make them speed boots ors some such. I dont mind the look but they should DO something.
3) Theyre NOT trade routes, seriously folks Ive seen freighters etc all over the place and seems totally unrelated to the 'lanes'
Can you imagine a bunch of people flying on the highway and a deep space encounter wanders past the lane and BAM, fifty people are sucked in and now they all have to wait a little bit longer to get to the nearest spacestop for a tinkle...it would be MADDENING.
Comments
Hmm.. good guess on they being freighter routes.. although your guess is as good as mine :S
When i first saw them i thought they were indeed speed ways, you go through them and your warp speed jumps up..
Nope..

I look at the sector space layout as if I am sitting on my bridge and getting a computer projection of the sector.

Not slow, by any means!

I thought that happened in a TNG episode?

Interesting.
Also, why is the soundtrack continuously playing 6the sound of turbo lift doors opening? Or should that be another thread?
This thing makes the game look like TRON online.
Where are mah LIGHT CYCLES?

I concur.

Actually, that might be kind of interesting...
