You can't. There is no taunts and no way to increase threat generation above raw damage. All you can do is grab the aggro first thing and try and debuff the target or buff the escorts.

In practice what will happen is the escort will grab aggro in 2 seconds.

    1. Revenge
    2. Thunder Clap (if enough Rage and target is not yet affected by the debuff) or Sunder Armor/Devastate
    3. Shield Bash or Sunder Armor/Devastate
    4. Sunder Armor/Devastate

I was going to add to the conversation, but I think this pretty much covers it all.

Be the first to fire at a group and use BO talent "Fire at will" It won't hold aggro forever but it will hold it long enough to make you rethink that strategy. :)

Still at the Lt. Cmdr level but I've had limited success with 'emergency power to weapons', 'fire at will' and weapon battery combo. I say "limited" because it won't really be effective without some coordination with the rest of your group.

Basically I try to go in first at an angle with full power to weapons. Hit the closest guy and turn broadside to the group. When enough are in range I hit 'fire at will'.

Once the battle is joined, I continue going one way, keeping my head on as swivel while manually switching targets and putting a little phaser fire on them to keep their attention. Give the bigger boys in the group special treatment, and be sure to check the target of my target area in the HUD overhead to make sure they aren't straying to poke at someone squishy. Torpedoes get fired off at targets of opportunity as they pass through the front or rear. Tap a weapon batt if you have a particularly stubborn guy that won't turn your way. If your escort is shooting at something (which they always are) don't bother fighting for aggro on that target because you won't win. Instead, focus on everything he's not shooting at.

In the mean time, the rest of my group goes the other way. All the while focus firing on a single target to pull it off and kill it away from the rest of the enemy ships (in theory. in practice the smaller ships tend to fly all over the frigging place, but just make sure to your focus on the enemy cruisers and battleships).

When it's down to the last few ships I go weapons power full and bump up 'emergency power to weapons' for extra oomph, which usually nets the last few kills.

This works great if your team will work together. Breaking the tank group and the kill group in two separate directions lets the tankers know what needs to be shot at by way of which directions the green beams are flying and enemy ship facings. However, it will not work so great (or at all) if your escort(s) is determined to fly straight into the middle and sit there to randomly shoot at anything in front of him.

rush in, they like to take out escorts and science ships first (were talking pvp right?) but if your a lonesome cruiser, or more than 10k they will usually attemt a gank, to kill you in a few seconds

i use this technique with reverse shield polarity, which basically gives you 15 second immunity from energy weapons, and during that time any energy weapons fired at you recharges your shields so they pretty much stay full to deal with other weapons, thats usually enough time to drop their shields and stick a couple of quantums into their hull....but sometimes they run away...

It seems to me the harder I hit (im dps) the more 'annoyed' the other ships get, chances are though its just luck of the draw for me though. I dont think they really have an aggro table.

the game is purely positional... if you want to tank.. get in the line of fire... Its really as simple as that

The threat system in this game hasn't been tested thoroughly enough (not at all that I know of) to give you an answer. If its all damage like the rest of this game, do more damage and tell the escorts to kepe an eye on the threshold if they get ****y about a death.

There are 'increased threat' abilities, but those are for Tac officers. Tac officers don't tank, they pull the enemy off tanks.

Just like every other MMO ever, the Devs have no idea how to implement a Tank class into the launch of a game. I hope there is more to the threat system than 'durr dual cannons + rapid fire FTW!!!!1!!!one'. If there is, eventually, the community will figure it out and tank how the game needs to be tanked. Not what the Devs intended to tank (which doesn't work even in theroy for STO rofl).

    1) Maul every auto-attack
    2) Stack Lacerate to 5
    3) Hit Mangle every cooldown
    4) Keep Demoralizing Roar up
    5) Spam Swipe

Tanking.. with taunts and DPS.. is just a game mechanic.. that is completly idiotic.. When players go attack a group of ships.. its a battle cruiser and some DPS stuff.. what do they do? bang on the battle cruiser while getting pummeled by heavy DPS classes?? NO they take out the high threats first as they should..

The AI should work in the same way..

People should have to fly and avoid fire,, and use other skills, besides just being a flying glass cannon of death.. If thats they way you wanna set your ship up, well be prepared to go down and go down hard..

If you wanna play a TANK.. saving the world.. then do it..

FLy your ship inbetween the line of fire between your glass cannon buddy and soak up the damage.. Let your freind and you use your skills together to make this work..

Use ablities like tractor beam, or scrammble sensors,, or jam sensors,. Or lots of other ablities.. to make this work to the best you can..

I love the fact that this game isnt a simple... I tank.. i tank.. you blast with out risk.. this takes lots more thought..

Wanna tank? get in the way of that full spread volley.. take up position and fly in the way of those ships trying to target your freinds.. have your freinds help getting you in the way by using evasive manuvers.. It can be done

No tuants? of course there are, but they are the normal kind, when fighitng a Klingon try In zone chat with the targets name "your mother was beat up by that Farm boy from Star Wars and he is your father", or if fighting Feds try "Kirk shot first"

or the real generic ones, here are two, one or the other will work on either side most of the time" Combat is perfect" or when that one doesnt work try "Combat is to easy".

that will get um angry at you, now as for getting um to shoot at you, well....

Since when did this game have collision detection for anything but plasma warheads? You can break LOS with asteroids etc but I haven't seen ships occlude each other.

Nor have I. If they did it would mean the escorts can't fire at their target either.
