suggestion/plead/demand : can we have a system of assisted targeting similar to CO.

the game is out and i still dont see cryptic importing the object targeting system in champion online to this game.

personally i dont see how it can be that hard to copy the system over, heck it is the same engine and even most (about 99.9%) of the options in the options page are exactly the same.

to those who dont know what this champion online style assisted targeting is, check out this video. (it has been around since CO release)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1Oe3KezBUU

edit:
to respond to those who may not know what the system is and is too lazy to watch the video. this is what it do in simple bullet points.
* you have a fixed targeting reticle in the center of the screen.
* you move your view using the right stick as usual. during which the targeting reticle may pass over or pass near a object you want to target.
* the assisted targeting kick in, and semi highlight the object near the reticle. (the functionality of this assisted feature can be changed in the options page to do the following. highlight the object nearest to the reticle regardless to the distance away, or give it priority to distance away, left or right.)
* if you want to target something in a large mob of stuff, you can fine tune the highlighted object by moving the stick slightly.
* when you are happy, press the target button (ie, the same button as tab, or whatever you bind your target next enemy to) and the object is targeted. amazingly the same target button is used if you just want to do select next target. and so no button is wasted.

more edit:
this system will not replace the traditional system of targeting (ie tab and using the mouse). it can easily be turned off (as in champion online) by turing off the targeting reticle and set the tab option to "target nearest to far" which is the default tab targeting option. so to those who feels like saying...
Tabbed targetting is alright
i can only say [dont use it]

more edit:
to those ppl who feels like saying ...
Or use a mouse and keyboard. =)
Game controllers will never be as good in games with a lot of controls/UI interactions.
i can only say... [toggle ignore on]

why do we want this, you ask?
it is for those of us playing with a xbox controller, i can tell you from experience (since co release) this system of assisted targeting is just as good as the old fashion way of selecting object using the mouse.

hear this from me cryptic, you are letting a good thing going to waste.

p.s. although it is possible to macro a similar system into the game using AHK, you can not macro in the assisted feature that exist CO. coming from a person who has gotten used to the CO system, it is just not the same. in fact i see this as a example of the dev being lazy and forcing you to write your own addon just so that the game is playable, for example autofire.

p.p.s. this is a copy of thread posted in "Controls and User Interface", if not only for the reason the forum is more active here, maybe a dev will see it this time. tbh, i've been asking for this feature on and off since the start of OB and not one dev reply yet. chances are the forum moderator know nothing about the games's core programming and only deal with superficial question, such as, lets see, how do i wipe my.....

Can't you assign a button+button push to the tab key?

I tried with the controller for about 30 minutes then threw it under the desk, it is now my TS3 headset extension cable :D

Can't see why it would be a problem to have in game. Watching that vid the player went First person view, can you do that in STO?? If not add that as well.

    see edited post...

people dont play CHAMPION ONLINE in first person view, it is always played in 3rd person view but the same system can be used effectively in either way.

this does not mean it will replace the "target next target" button. it is a addition (see edit post).

Looks like a very useful feature. Handy for both space and ground combat.

As long as there's an option to disable it, I wouldn't be opposed.

Game controllers will never be as good in games with a lot of controls/UI interactions. It's one of the reasons I rarely ever play console games, and certainly never first person shooters and the like.

I've been wanting this since my first day in Closed Beta!

Please Cryptic, if CO can do this, please try to bring it into STO. My least favorite thing about this game is trying to target TRIBBLE when I want to use my mouse for something else. (IE: Tab targeting sucks and has sucked since CB.)

Tabbed targetting is alright, but it would help speed up focus firing if there were an assist feature.

this is specially useful during one of those battle where there are a LOT of mines. you can either tab target them all to get to the ship. or...
    1. get yourself a cordless mouse.
    2. get this feature working.

OP, I don't want to come off as a troll, but, unlike CO, this game wasn't made with other control systems in mind. Champions Online was made, from the ground up, focusing on the 360 controller because CO was supposed to launch on the 360 at some point. STO wasn't planned for a console release. Yes, they could add it, but I don't see it happening, because, unlike CO, this game wasn't designed with consoles in mind.

I hate this trend. Console gamers want everything to be easy for them. Games shouldn't play themselves or assist you in any way. If they implement this feature, I would like to see a big clown hat on everyone's ship that is using assisted targeting. That way we know they're nubs at this and will treat them accordingly.

    three reason.
    1. STO and CO, share the same graphic engine, maybe even the same core codes. so there should be no problem importing the system here.
    2. they said this game will support joysticks. then they should have all the features of joystick support.
    3. this is game is 3D (semi) and works better with joystick/joypad.

assisted targeting in the sense of CO, dont mean it is easy mode. it is simply an alternative method of targeting, one need some sort of assistance since the joypad stick is not as sensitive as a mouse.
Dude fix the colors on your post it is almost unreadable with that blue.

why dont you try the usual method of highlight it with the mouse.

I actually would love that targeting system in STO. It gets annoying to have to tab like crazy to switch targets as they cross my weapon arcs on my cruiser. This would make it much less irritating to do rapid target switches to make maximal use of my firepower.

I use this option is CO and it adds so much to combat. I'm really not sure why they don't have the option in STO, given the unlieing engine is the same. STO's ground combat (especially) would greatly benefit.
