So I've finally made it to LT CMDR. I got my new science ship and it's full of MKII items which I have plenty of. So where do I go to get MK III and MK IV items? My planned layout is dual phasers and quantums forward, and 2 phaser turrents aft. Sound decent enough? Any input appreciated!
Starbase 39, in the Sierra system of Alpha Centari sells basic Mk III stuff.
I'd suggest bugging that the ship starts with Mk II stuff as well. Rather silly that the first thing we have to do after getting a new ship is replacing all its items.
The stuff you get from exploration badges is great!
My only issue is that shields are so freaking expensive compared to everything else you can trade for. Shields are around 200 badges while everything else is like 70. What's with that?

Good question.
While we're here, we might as well mention quest rewards, no?
You can get quantum mines or quantum torp mkIII from the space fleet action in the laurentine(sp?) system -- that's a pretty easy way to grab your quantum launcher as soon as you hit LtC.

I'll have to check that out. I still havent been able to find a quantum launcher yet, which is frustrating. In closed and open beta I got them pretty easily in my starter ship, now all I get are friggin shield batteries. It's annoying.
Axterix, thanks for the info. I'm a lt cmdr 5 now, and I've never visited that base. Been wondering why no one at Sol sells Mk III equipment.
As for weapon loadout, I'm using a 2 phaser arrays (1 fore, 1 aft), 1 quantum (fore), and 1 turret (aft). All currently MK II, and I'm working on getting exploration badges for the mk IV items. Finding that the turret on the aft REALLY can make the difference in battering down the shields of the guy I've got targeted while I'm running straight at 'em. This lets me get of a boosted torpedo volley, and then I starting circling and pounding them with broadsides and a quick in-turn to lay in more torps whenever I get to an down shield.
Science vessels just power through the enemies at the lt cmdr missions. At LC 5, I'm just now had a couple of missions where my shields have taken enough of a beating that I need to use science team II.

Actually, if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. When you get your Miranda, its gear is "standard issue." There then are two upgrade steps you can take (Mk I and II). When you get to Lt Cmdr you get a free set of Mk II stuff and can upgrade two steps (Mk III and IV), and so on.
@ the OP: I kept my Mk II gear and did Tier 2 exploration missions for Mk IV gear, pretty much bypassing any need to purchase any Mk III stuff (I did slot drops if their stats warranted).
Is there anywhere to buy Mk IV stuff with credits instead?
short answer ... no
if you want to always have the best stuff posible you will need to buy everything you see as important enough to get after getting the new ship (in this case mark III) and then replace it with the higher things when you loot or get them as reward or badges.. the system works fine if you ask me...

Okay, thank you. I've purchased Mk III items in every area since hitting Lieutenant Commander and I will continue to upgrade as I loot/use badges for Mk IV stuff. Thanks for clearing that up.

i preffered 1quant +3 arrays - sciencevessels are maneuverable enough to broadside while recharging the launcher.
