Really really weird fleet bug

I was doing a ground mission with my friend when I told him I was going to make a new character. So I log out, the screen went black and I assumed the game crashed, so I restarted it. I make my new character, he invites me to the fleet...but my main is no longer the fleet leader. He is the lowest rank and some random person in the fleet is now the leader. What happened?
