Optus USB Wireless - Crashing STO/Windows

So here it is, I've almost capped my net out with a week to go, so I've been using my wireless internet when I can to reduce the usage. My problem is that I use Optus USB Wireless and when I play STO with it, within an hour it will completely crash my computer, sometimes the screen will freeze, while the mouse can move, but then eventually it will all freeze, or else it will just all freeze at once, requiring a restart.

I can't really find anything in my windows/application logs just the standard error about the computer shutting down unexpectedly. There are no errors leading up to the crash either. There isn't a blue screen or error message just a total freeze up.

My PC Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (Latest updates)
Intel Core i7 920
MSI GTX295
12GB DDR3 1600Mhz
2.25TB SATAII HDD
USB Headphones
All with latest drivers

Now it doesn't crash with any other game or anything else. I was recently down with family in Melbourne for over a week and used the USB Wireless fine there while playing a multitude of other games without a single problem, it only happens with STO.

I've also closed down just about every unneeded application/service and it still crashes my PC. Nothing else has done this, so it is definitely an STO problem.

The USB modem is a HUAWEI E160E HSDPA. It uses the Optus Connect software. I'd still like to know if it is possible for this to cause conflicts with STO.

Are you using AVG? I had the same issue with another game, it seems now that I have disabled AVG it is working fine, I was reading a whirlpool forum about someone having a similar issue.

Using a Optus or telstra.. any 3G wireles internet is not Gamer Friendly..

    what happens is ..

the usb modem gets discconnected or speed changes.. there for the STO game see's that change.

however the game for some reason dosn't time out like it should.. it locks up and having to reboot the pc manualy.

i have adsl but the network cable in my pc fell out and i got the same lockup ...

for some reason the sto games dosn't go back to the login screen it just fails and locks up. i am sure cryptic know about it when or if they ever fix it is an other matter..

but you will find that your Optus internet is the cause. its not Gamer friendly.. Optus or telstra don't advise this at the point of sale. for any type of internet that you want to use for games.. best getting Cable or ADSL
if anything its better faster and more reliable.

    hope this helps
