What actually happens? Does it crash the system/ BSOD?

in worst case ur graphics card will just die because of overheating.. if u got heat sensors installed the system might do many things... from reducing the gpu speed to an emergency system shutdown

quickest fix as of now is to use the /maxfps command.. i limit my card to 30 fps (with all settings on full)

wow what is this....I just bought and installed a Radeon 5850, am I at risk of this happening to me as well?
It would be nice if cryptic gave a warning in the launcher or on the frontpage, instead of customers having to rely on finding an obscure post on the forums...

you can also try -perFrameSleep x in the launcher command line options.
i'm using perFrameSleep 20 and false fullscreen mode and have no heat problems. in fact my 8800gtx runs cooler than it usually does for other games.

Iv got an Sapphire ATI Radeon 5770.. it runs at 99% load when sto is up but my temps seem fine at around 55 - 57c :V

Does this apply only to people with older GPU's?

lol there is no such bug. people are panicing because sto stress your gpu a lot heating it up more than some other games out there. just make sure you have good airflow and a clean case

Yeah other than the fact that the computer SHUTS OFF within a few minutes. If you only want to play for 2 minutes at a time, then you could say that. You can't speak for everybody in generalities.....

    To the OP,

Wow my graphics card died two days ago, and I've been playing this game almost non-stop since the start of open beta. I am gonna be ****ed if STO cost me $250 for upgrades on top of my pre-order and lifetime sub! =/

if your pc shuts off because of heat you have a cooling issue, nothing else. if it shuts off because of something else then there's a software issue, people need to get this straight,

If my PC shuts off because of STO, then my PC has an STO issue. There, I corrected that for you.

at one time there were ppl claiming that it was ppls computer but they have been silenced and have disappeared for fear of how many ppls systems they insulted. I spent days argueing with certain ppl and in the end they were crushed.

another fanboy who swares its cooling but will never answer why this imaginary cooling issue only happens with STO. Funny how no one who posts says they had heat issues prior to STO. Youre wrong its the game and its blantently obvious.

it probably was burnt out by STO. I doubt that u can do anything but get a new card i dont believe Cryptic will be owning up to this soon. Most likely a silent patch like in CO when it had a similar issue.

I dont hate cryptic or STO but they need to fix this now before more ppl lose their rigs. Neither Cryptic or any of the "its your cooling" posts have come forward to answer the million dollar question. WHY DO PPL KEEP POSTING THAT ONLY STO GIVES HEAT ISSUES.

no because even if your not overheating your still "redlining" your card and forcing it to work at its maxximum load when it doesnt need. This massive bug causes your GPU to try and reach infinite FPS causing it to work hard when it doesnt have to. You still need to do the /maxfps command to avoid long term damage due to excessive load.

My 5870 has been dieing in FPS since the patch update on sunday, now my fps is dropping everyday first from 90 then to 30 to 22 and now 16.

It is at 90% capacity or higher.

Something is very wrong if a top of the line graphics card is crashing on an MMO1

lol a fanboy who doesnt realize that sto isnt even a dx10 game! What stress is it putting on my i7 920 and gtx 295 with 6 gigs of ram at 1600? I have an immaculate case and plenty of fans.

You know its not colling your just trying to goad ppl by subtely saying they have bad, dirty cheap rigs.

its the game and its been proven

nah it has to be your cooling theres just no way its sto. You see currently STO is THE most powerful game on the market requiring the best systems only. No other new game uses as much power as STO at dx9 thats why you need more cooling its just that awesome and powerful.

Oh and if you believe its your rig and sto is the most graphically intense game on the planet then i also have a bridge to sell you lol.

i've been able to get my system stable, after applying better cooling to my system, and a more stable airflow in and out of my computer, as i installed a air-flow-tube trough it.. i got down to 44c

    on my i7 system

a solution, if im not wrong, that makes your pc work less yes? making it run cooler as well. if your pc cant run at 100% there is something wrong with your system/cooling.

Right, just got my watercooling kit installed, and put a temperature sensor on the GPU:

    At bios , no OS : 30c

    Idle in windows : 35c

    In STO : 80c

    In STO , maxfps=45 :60c

Its a bug. We need a default maxfps value, say 50 or something.

(Zalman Reserator 1 v2, with a Zalman Fanmate 2 doing the temp sensing)

becuas it is a new genration of games. just wate till you see how much dx11 games heat up your system . i have seen exparments with dx 11 games and they heat up just like sto . sto is not dx11. but it is along the lines of a work your gpu till it screams game

they will never fix this.because form there point of view there is no problem . you all need ot get this cryptic. dus not consider this a bug.

A bug is an unintended behaviour in a program ( and Alan Turing and Tommy Flowers both agree with me on this one). Cryptic can consider the sky pink if they want but it wont make it pink.

A bug is a bug, whether they deny it or not.

80c is still not too hot..

you're free to use any max fps commands you like but i dont want to be limited by people who dont know how to cool their systems by default settings.
