Downtime countdown FAIL

Seriously, what is the point of putting up a downtime countdown, and then take the servers down right after the 5 minute warning? You guys really need to get your act together, this is terribly unprofessional.

I did start getting a lot of lag, so maybe the server was just about to crash or the msg took its time to get to us lol

It was hilarious, yes. The 5 minute message pops up and before you can type "let's finish this fast" BANG down it went. It was no biggie but I can easily imagine situations where such a practice would drive a lot of people VERY mad. If you're going to have a countdown, respect it like everyone else does.

If the most warning they gave was 5 minutes then there was probably something bad brewing; a rapidly accelerating memory leak or some such. The servers may have died on their own before they could cleanly shut them down.

Haha gotta love how much people go out of the way to make excuses for game companies. Actually, they gave a countdown from 30 minutes with 10 min updates at 20 and 10 and finally the 5 min updatre, after which (a few seconds) the server went POOFF. As I said, not a big deal, but it sure looks bad and unprofessional.

LOL it just happened again. A countdown with messages sliding on the center of the screen, the 5 minute message pops up... BANG server down. Someone seriously needs to check Cryptic's maintenance team's watch or teach them to read their own messages. So far, it's been a joke but it could easily become a serious issue.

Its dumb because you could be in the middle of a transaction which then results in loss which then generates tickets. If it says down in 5 minutes don't pull the plug 30 seconds later.

Yesterday, I saw the message that the servers would be down from 11am to 2pm (GMT). Therefore, when I played STO this morning I logged off well before that time (about 1040am), therefore I was able to get to where I wanted to be and not have the server "crash" on me. It wasn't rocket science. :D

Human nature unfortunately. I can't wait until subscriptions kick in and most of these trolls move on after getting tired of QQing.

Yep I also agree, it would seem people can't help themselves. Or judging by the topic title are 12 years old.

If things like this annoy you, stay away from computers and the games involved.

Yes, I could think of a few more situations where this practice could result in significance annoyance, loss or even character corruption. It is a bad practice and it should stop right now. Most MMO companies actually advise players to log off before servers go down precisely to avoid data corruption and they hold players responsible for whatever may happen. Cryptic seems to have chosen to ignore this practice and they insist on the ridiculous practice of a countdown that is not to be taken seriously.

Congratulations Einstein for stating the obvious. The fact nobody asked for a way to avoid it is irrelevant to you, isn't it? That 's not what the thread is about, it's about Cryptic's practice of not respecting their own countdown and what possible consequences may arise from that.

Gotta love the vast knowledge and wise advice available from teenagers.
Human nature unfortunately. I can't wait until subscriptions kick in and most of these trolls move on after getting tired of QQing.

From Wikipedia: In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[

So, not only did you misuse the word troll but you actually incurred yourself in the "crime" you falsely accused me of. Your post was inflammatory, extraneous and off-topic. Your intention was clearly both of provoking emotional response and of disrupting on-topic discussion.

Unfortunately, not only you failed in your intent, failed in your use of internet slang but you'll also have to put up with me for a long time, since I have a lifetime sub and I am not a fanboi ant.

    Have a good day

You got the message "Yesterday"... I mostly just see the message when the server is down. When it's planned the day before i can hardly call it scheduled!

You obviously don't get it. Probably a IQ limitation. When you have a few years of MMOing under your belt, even you will be capable of looking back and realizing what a fool you made of yourself. Till then, 1/10 for trolling.

Hahah. Your'e so pathetic. However, I do apologise for having the audacity to have an opinion about the down time and for posting it without your permission. Next time I'll be sure to run any post I intend to make by you first.

Hmmm, I would like to make a post already about a question I have regarding accounts.

Doctorfun, may I have your permission to post it as I wouldn't like to cause you any suffering by my being of such low IQ and posting.

Damn! I guess I should have asked permission before posting my request for permission. :D

Well your little attempt at humor, even if I admit it to be funny :D, is misdirected. You were the one trolling and trying to derail the thread in a really condescending way, so I merely gave you a taste of your own medicine. Obviously you felt it, so mission accomplished.

You did not "express an opinion about the downtime". The downtime was not an issue so even if you did it would be off-topic. You merely trolled.

Since your attempt at humor has convinced me I misjudged your IQ :p, I'll explain again: It's not about having 5 less minutes of game time, that's irrelevant of course. It's about having a countdown and nor respecting it. Is the issue that it annoys me? No. The issue is that it can cause data corruption if you're caught in the middle of a transaction or skill upgrade, for example. The issue is it's unprofessional to put up a countdown and not respect it. The issue is that the announcement then should be "Downtime at approximately XX time. Once, could have been an oversight. Twice, it's a practice and one that shows lack of professionalism and lack of respect for customers

Your example and many others, have lead me to the same conclusion. The way things are going now are not very professional.

Still a lot of MMO's had startup problems with having not enough server capacity or simply a lot of bugs. Or in case of STO, both. I still have that feeling like I'm playing in the beta. Hopefully time will make this game a lot better and the server maintenance more professional.

My original comments was not meant to be condascending in the slightest. I think you just took it to heart far to heavily, however, I apologise if my post did come across as such.

Well, I do like to think that I have at least some decent level of IQ, I am, after all a policeman and I am sure I need some degree of IQ in order to be able to be a policeman? Perhaps I am just kidding myself :D
