After reading a flaming post about Trekkie carebears, I figured I would set the record stright. lol

So what do you cal yourself when it comes to Trek? BTW I said I was a trekker in the other post, but I am really a Trekkie. lol

1. Trekkie - Are often fans of the show but tend not to too heavily engage in the geekyer aspects of it such as conventions or creating their own uniform, righting fan scripts. Still likely to own plenty of DVD/PC Games on the subject buts that’s about it.

2. Trekkers - Tend to be much more devoted/fanatical and noticeably geekier, oftern sporting uniforms from the show in public with out much reason. Speaking Klingon to their friends (though most Treckies know the odd phrase her or there) and having hundreds of pounds (yes, not dollars) worth of Star Trek memorabilia.

Does that sound about right? Got this off the UD. lol

Again so what are you?

Trekkie. I'm a much bigger Star Wars fan and if I was going to dress like anything it would be a Sith.

I've never worn a Trek uniform or written fan fiction, but I'm pretty farkin' into Star Trek - closer to 2 than 1 but I've always considered myself to be a Trekkie. Often when I hear Trekkers explain why they are Trekkers and not Trekkies the reasons sound a little self important to me.

Trekkie was originally seen as pejorative.

I would not be a Trekker by this system, but since I can explain how Warp Drive works, tell you the warhead mass of a photon torpedo (TNG era -- two kilograms) and have seen every Trek (except TMP) at the earliest possible showing on opening day, I'd say I'm a bit more than this definition of Trekkie.

I don't like either label. The don't sound right to me... as words. Trek is pretty good word, but once one starts conjugating it it sounds awkward (trekked, trekking), I'm a Star Trek Fan, or Trek Fan, if I bother labeling myself, but that is no reflection on people who choose to be Trekkers or Trekkies.

    Trekkie

I like the sound better than "Trekker". "Trekker" always sounded a bit pretentious, like someone who "didn't want to be called a Trekkie".

For the record. I've owned half a dozen uniforms, collected resin castings off studio props, made my own props, modified toys, built models, customized models, written fan fiction, made drawings, blueprints, comic strips, and even a flash cartoon. I've held the position of the president of a fan club, vice president of two clubs, founding member of three.. I've held office on the regional level of an international fan club, I've edited newsletters, planned social events, and run and played hundreds of role-playing games. And in highschool, I made my own tribbles. In the years following I made my own commbadges, and latex appliances, and more. I've attended countless conventions, and worked staff on many of them.

The problem with the terms "Trekker" vs "Trekkie" isn't what one group does, and what one group doesn't do.. it's people who try to arbitrarily pigeonhole people based on whichever of the two terms they like.

i have to agree with maverisms here, by these definitions i am probably a Trekkie, simply because i've never been to a con, or dressed up Star trek, although i have written fan fiction for my own edification. it is a tough one.

    p.s.
know this is the wrong forum to complain, but i spend a ton of time d/l ing this headstart, and patching, and every time i go to log on, the stinking server is down, or i have to wait nearly an hour to get onto the server, and once i get on, it announces that it's goin' down in ten minutes. so on day 3 of the head start i have gotten a whopping ten minutes of gameplay in. i'm just sayin cause i know a lot of ppl. are in this same boat. (srry STEAM users, i feel for ya!)

I've probably been a Trekkie longer then most Trekkers have been alive. :D

There were only Trekkies at one time. Interesting how the definitions changed.

I went to conventions in the 70's. Built all of the models had a lot of the gear. Including a uniform shirt.

Same here again. I'm a massive fan of the shows but have never dressed up or gone to a convention. That said I have a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge with regard to episode plots, characters and so forth. So I don't think either name is appropriate. I would say "Avid Trek Watcher". I also played BOTF a massive amount with a couple of friends over LAN.

I tend to be pretty good at Trek trivia quizzes but i'm not that hot on the more technical details. I do think that coffee tastes better out of my Captain's Mug however.

I agree. I dabble in some Star Trek fanfiction, I was even a member of a play-by-email story where I
role played a permanently exiled ex-Que turned human with nearly complete post-mortal amnesia. College ended up forcing my hand to end that one.

I sure do miss those guys on the R.S.S. Cromwell.

Still, I say I'm a Trekkie. Trekker sounds dorky to me. :)

Yeah, I'm not sure how I'd find into these either. I've worn a Starfleet Uniform, been dressed as a Klingon and a Bajoran. I know a number of Klingon terms, I've seen nearly every Star Trek episode officially released with the exception of the Animated Series, and I've even seen a few fan films. I own various 'Art of Star Trek' books, and owned the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition and the first edition of the Enclyclopedia. Used to collect the Fact Files until they seemed to be neverending, and went to countless conventions in the mid to late 90s, I was a 'Midshipman' in a club, collected Star Trek game cards. figures and ships, got a picture of myself as a kid with Q! I admit to being a Star Trek Fan, and I've no problem with that at all. Whether I'd call myself a Trekkie or Trekker I've no idea. I do know that I'm a geek.

I believe Gene Roddenberry once said: "It's Trekkie....I should know, I created it." And thus I am a Trekkie. As someone in here said, "Trekker" sounds like someone who doesn't want to "lower themselves" by being called a Trekkie.

I don't really care much for the definitions. I've seen most Star Trek episodes, read a few novels, and seen the movies. Never been to a con... don't plan on it.

I guess if I was to call myself something, it would be trekkie, but only because it sounds better than trekker in my head. No definitions - just purely a phonetic thing.

I posted a link to a picture of the awesome mug of ultimate awesome. Think its in the "what do you drink when you play" thread.

It is made of win and glazed in awesome. Also the handle is shaped like a vulcan ear. And its about twice the size of a normal mug. Which means more caffeine. Which explains why I'm talking in macros.

I dunno if this has been said already, i didn't see it where i read, but ...

i thought trekkie was the folks more into tos?

Trekker came along during post tos for those of us who love what came after.

I too am not a trekker per this given system because I don't wear my uniform in public anymore, but I do have one somewhere, and lots and lots of old toys and memorabilia from when I was younger. I know pretty much anything about star trek canon enough at least to hold my own in conversation with the geekiest of Trek fans. I guess I don't really know what I am anymore thanks to you lol j/k

If someone wants to call me one or the other go for it lol

Trekkie, I own the movies, games and a couple of ship models, thats it. I have no idea what a dilithium crystal looks like or where ten forward actually is on the old enterprise (other than being at the front obviously).

Oh and I prolly got the wrong spelling on dilithium too knowing my luck, but I do enjoy the idea of startrek, the shows/movies and games.

I am not fitting any of the description. I just like PC games incl. MMOs and I liked watching Star Trek in TV but thats about it. So I cant consider myself a fan really, as I like sci-fi as a whole and dont stick to one sci-fi preset.
