There are far too many Star Trek carebears around here that oppose any change to the game whatsoever to make it more challenging and fun. Giving ridiculous reasons like "I have a job and a family I don't want a death penalty!" is simply ridiculous. The mere belief that majority of the "DP wanters" want an EVE online ship destruction is also ridiculous.
I bet the majority of players in this game, specifically life time subscribers, are old Star Trek fans 40+ and this is their first MMO and they want to be the immortal Star Trek hero with his immortal crew running around killing everything with no challenge, just like they imagined back in the day. Well congratulations, after all these years of waiting your fantasies have finally come true.
but your purpose is not over yet! Now you strive to maintain this carebear game with no death penalties, reward system that supports zerging (Healing and so on not counting towards Fleet Action / PvP reward points that support the "I come, I kill, I die, I repeat, I win!" mindset even more) You simply don't care about a challenge. You don't wan't a challenge. You want everything to be handed to you on a silver plate. Like you were playing a single player game.
Why do you persist? You are the problem and why this game still sits in the dark. If you are not prepared for typical MMO mechanics, you shouldn't be playing one in the first place. You should EMBRACE things like death penalty or a reward system that supports teamplay and survival. Not oppose it! If you do not see this game as an MMO, and help make it a better game, it will vanish, and you are to blame for it!

Shame on you! Wake up now before it's too late!
Could you be a little more dismissive, condescending, and assuming with your next post?
This is how mainstream games are made: to ensure optimal sales by pleasing the lowest common denominator.
What you want is a niche game: one which punishes the player because they're hardcore and expecting that kind of depth.
You can flail and bang your fists against the wall all you like about this fundamental fact. I know I've done more than my share of doing the same. However, in the end, Cryptic has a very expensive game to pay for, and the niche that would enjoy what you're proposing can't do it.
Stop using words like Carebear please if you really looking forward to have mature discussion.
What's wrong with it? It's an internet term that actually describes alot of the people's behaviours that are against death penalties. Nothing wrong with being one, as long as you behave.
Since I wrote this thread I've read atleast 8 posts containing "I cancelled my pre-order. Bye!". I hope you feel guilty!
I doubt that they were fully based upon the PvP system. People are cancelling because this game does not ring true with the Star Trek realm. For many reasons...
Another thing is problems with vendors.
Another reason is the instability of the servers.
You are like a news reporter taking 2 words of something someone said and reporting it totally out of context.
Yes, people are cancelling their accounts, but you can't put it on the 'no death penalty' in the game...
Besides, "8" people saying they are cancelling is not even worth blinking an eye at when you compare it to the overwhelming amount of subscribers.
Ok, I agree with the OP...the problem with no DP is the consequences it has on game play. However, I would submit that a lot of us DO want the game to play like a Star Trek episode so if there is a death penalty it needs to be a relatively minor one.
I would suggest simply having an 'Emergency Warp/Beam Out' scenario where your ship warps/you beam to a (safe) respawn point at with no Hull/Shields/Health. You then either a) Thow yourself back into the fight immediately in your weakened state or b) use normal means of Hull/Health/Shield repair and get into the fight as soon as you are able. The penalty would be time and lost opportunity in PVP but it would be at least semi realistic and would make people try to avoid dying.
Live Long and Prosper
P.S. The other advantage is it'd feel like situations in a lot of the episodes where they had to rush to get shields/engines/weapons back online and get back into the fight...
As you said, a lot of people, this is their first MMO, and because they're trekkies, bring a good deal of money in, I guess they'd be shooting themselves in the foot to add a death penalty as these people could walk away .
Hey he is right even though I happen to be 40+ but the game is to carebear to have longevity. This is the standard today with mmos. Of course those of us 40+ want the old school style of MMO back on the market and we are sick of paying to play console games. Make it harder even more so than CB give us a reason to play with tactics please and make the other learn 2 play the game.
I hope all you old school "I had to walk a mile to the nearest starbase" people leave soon, no one cares about your whining of wanting more hardcore gameplay.
90% of the characters in Star Trek were 'carebears' as well, Starfleet was filled a bunch of people who went on about PEACEFUL Space Exploration and didnt want to get into fights as well, and they lived in soft plush Luxury Starships, so get over yourselves, Star Trek has always been about carebears for carebears. If you want Hardcore, play a Klingon.
The STO forums are quickly becoming my favorite game forums ever. Never before has such a weird cocktail of old-school franchise fans and l33t gAmeRzz been placed in the same internet space. I freaking love how Trekkies slap down the gAmerRzz for being immature.
Since I wrote this thread I've read atleast 8 posts containing "I cancelled my pre-order. Bye!". I hope you feel guilty!
Well, bully for you!
First off, there is a death penalty already in game. It's crew loss. If that's not enough of a challenge for you just remove your shields from your ship's paperdoll and have at it. Good luck!
Secondly, the "Trekkie care bears" as you call them are the backbone of the game community. Insulting them will not get you anything but a bar-be-que. Hope you are wearing your asbestos undies. Have fun trollin'.
Not that I wouldn't mind a bit more of a challenge, but not in the way of combat. I could care less about whether the death penalty was cruel enough. Give me some mysteries or puzzles to solve. Challenge my mind. Star Trek Online should be more than pew pew pew boom.
HEY! I am a Trekker 40 plus with a family, and I want more content into this game, plus more risk vs what they have into it now. So don't think everyone over the age of 40 wants a dumbed down, carebear type of game, cause I for one DON'T. I am still hoping we get something that puts my risk into your game play, but only time will tell if that happens.

You're correct. I can't. but I think a death penalty plays a huge part in the "risk v.s reward" system. To make a game enjoyable one must simply feel that they have accomplished something. Having one would greatly improve the overall gaming experience in this game.
What I want is a true Star Trek MMO, with living worlds, big maps. Ability to beam down on planets that can support life(at any location almost) and run in to other species (F.e a Klingon player) and take it from there.
Most of it is doable, but with the current mindset on death penalties from the carebears the whole "risk v.s reward" thing simply doesn't work. It's one of the foundations for a good, fun and challenging MMO!

And, generally, true constructive discussion does not fall within the shadow of demeaning your opponent: "Trekkie Carebears"
Let's get something straight. I'm a Trekkie.
Just not a Trekkie carebear!

So mr. Trekkie, stop hating on the Trekkers. lol
