So... what does 'auxiliary power' do, anyway?

So we have weapon, shield, engine, and auxiliary power levels, as well as corresponding battery items we can use to boost each. I know what the first three do, but I have no idea when or why I'd want to boost auxiliary power. I've been looking for a description for this, but haven't found anything yet. Who can explain this for me? :)

For one thing, turning. That alone makes it fairly critical.

I just read in a "Helpful Tips for Starship Captains" thread

    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=90778

that it helps improve your rate of turning. Good thread, lots of other helpful advice there.

It's not only your turn rate that it affects, although for the Miranda is about as much as most people need to know. After that, it affects many abilities, specially Science ship/officers abilities like tractor beam, cloaking, detecting cloak, tachyon beams, scramble sensors, etc.

There is a description for each in the space controls section of the manual webpage: http://www.startrekonline.com/manual
    Auxiliary
Adding power to auxiliary increases your turn radius, crew recovery rate and increases the damage and duration of Science-based bridge crew powers.

being mostly a tactical captain, i keep my aux power pretty low, around 35, but with the skills and such it ends up more like 47 / 35. i pop a battery before using things like the tach beam, it moves the shield drain from ~35 per 'pulse' ( i still don't know how many pulses i get) to about 95 per pusle for those 3 or 4 valuble seconds.

In addition to what was stated above....

Aux power helps many Sci BO powers become more effective / powerful / longer / etc..

Aux power increases your Sensors +perception allowing you to see cloaked ships at greater distances.

    :)
