Why is Chang a restricted word?

I can't give my Bridge Officer the last name Chang? Give me a break. Might as well make Smith a restricted word for names while you're at it.

I think the Klingon villain form Undiscover Countries was called that. So maybe its to protect the in game characters?

And yet I've seen people flying around named Riker?

That's most likely it. According to the naming conventions you can't name your character after any other existing character.

Bottom line: "Chang" is out, as for "Riker".... well, one could explain that with descendants or relatives. Or someone who just happens to have the same name.

I think "Chang" was blocked as he was one of THE villains during the late 23rd century, and a iconic and major figure in the Klingon Empire.
The Devs probably didn't want an armada of Chang-Wannabes marching through the Empire. As for Riker... as far as I can tell, many people don't like him anyway, so chances are slim that too many people will pick that name.

It's also a very common Chinese surname that has no business being banned just because some Klingon used the name a hundred years ago.

Back in OB, the game wouldn't let me name my BoP "Azetbur".
So, yeah. Looks like canon character names are locked.

I think it's Cryptics form of Genocide.

You see, anyone who would be decended from Chang's bloodline would be a fierce , unstoppable opponent. A Chang leading a Klingon Fleet could deliver a massive blow to the Federation. Since Feds whine about everything, they figured they just nerf the Klingons by not allowing any Changs to surface.

Thats my story, and im sticking to it.

I think this is dumb to block out certain last names, especially common ones. Ones like Chang, O'Brien, Kim, could belong to anyone. It's especially dumb to limit the names on BO's, as we're pretty much the only ones who see them anyway.

If someone wants to run around with fake Spock and Kirk, let them since it doesn't affect anyone else. Or if you're more creative and want to use the offspring of an established character, you can't do it because of the last name restriction. Lame.
