Got a Dell XPS laptop with a 9800M GTX card - having problems getting the game to play at anywhere near recommended settings. As described on other posts the game runs relatively smoothly in space at recommended but on ground missions the stuttering is terrible and the framerate is anywhere from 20 down to below 5 at some points.
Got the latest 195.62 drivers from nvidia and tried turning the various settings down and even played with the profile dsettings in the nvidia control panel but still only getting a decent framerate (30+) at low settings.
Anyhow any tips/ suggestions would be appreciated.
Wow got me stumped. Those specs are pretty much in line with my own laptop. Only diff is I have 4 gig of ram and 2.6 Core 2. Do you have a ton of background apps running? have you updated drivers lately?
Does sound like you shouldn't be having any issues.
If you've got a virus scanner running, check it isn't doing a scan while you're playing, that can cause those kind of problems, although the ground missions stuttering could be a latency issue. Have you tried a different proxy?
"If you own a Dell Inspiron 1420, Dell XPS M1330, Dell XPS M1530, or Dell Latitude D630/D630c it is highly recommended that you first install this Dell software update. "
Did you get the software update? Someone also mentioned background programs, my anti-virus kept running in the beckground for me. Other than that, laptops historiclly run slower because of the narrow bus on a laptop, as opposed to a desktop. Last, HEAT; make sure that you have a cooling pad for you laptop when running games like STO.

I updated my drivers last night, what nVidia means is go to the Dell site and update your BIOS. Takes about 5 mins. That is update nVidia wants you todo before you update to the lastest nVidia Driver (195.62) It helps, i saw some improvements.
i am running on a Dell 630 laptop with a nVidia Quatro NVS 135M with a Inte Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz and 2 GB Ram (upping to 4 this weekend.) on XP. The game runs well. I need to bump down to LOW Grapihcs for away missions and fleet combat with lots of asteroids. But very playable.
Go into your bios, see if there is an option for shared VRAM. A lot of modern onboard video chipsets are setting it to "Application Preference" or "Auto"..TRIBBLE that. Shove 512mb down it's throat. Or whatever the max for the card is.
