I have done a little research, but its hard to tell which class would be more fun for both pve and pvp. I am going back and fourth between tactical and engineering. I have been playing it for a bit and it seems a lot of what you do is just fight. So it would seem that tactical would be best maybe?
I don't know exactly what the trade offs are between the two.
Engineering = stonger shields bigger ship?
Tactical = DPS faster ships?
I just wonder how it balances out. If tactical usually wins every fight for pvp/pve, then whats the point of choosing any other class than tactical if all you do every mission is battle

i have the clue.. (if that is correct said) that they dont know...
if you read the ship list.. and the differences between ships... read the line of the cruisers... how often is there to read that they have larger cargo, larger crew and larger warpcore?
its always the same information while the sentence changes a little...
also i think this game really has no future thinking gameplay...
i mean: all information you can read is about the federation... so what do they plan? what is theyr actual plan? or what was the plan?
the game seems to be only about fed storyline... and klingons... pvp with a little pve?
that shall take the game alive for how long??
do they really think star trek players would be happy with two races?
and the executive producer said in an interview... the factions .. are not really concidered to be all playable..
You haven't included science in your comparison. From what I've seen, they have some pretty neat abilities and really good shields that can help them in a fight vs Tac. If they can withstand the first onslaught (which their shields probably can), they can most likely beat the Tac officer using skills such as their tractor beam and other such abilities.
You didn't even mention science, do not underestimate them. I've seen some nice heavy offensive science officers out there do some amazing things I didn't think they could do.
Unfortunately, your logic is flawed because you don't have to be an officer of the type to fly the ship. I myself an an engineer (for the ground turrets and shield buffs) but fly a sci vessel. Now if the question were what to be captain of, Escort or Cruiser, there are tons of examples on the forums of people talking about the differences.
Summary:
Escort is your high damage low HP. Soloing you'll need to use your head and abilities, in a fleet you go in as a group of Tac ships, pick out one target and annihilate it. Rince repeat.
Cruiser: You high HP, high mitigation "tank". Go in first drawing enemy fire, focus on a secondary kill target to soften it up while the Tac ships rip through the primary target.
Sci: Controller/Leader. Vast array of science skills to help heal others, and hider the enemies. Move in and lock out potential problems while backing up the Cruisers. Throw damage to help the Tacs, but keeping enemies controlled takes priority.
Dont get me wrong science is cool and all. I was just going back and fourth between Engineering and Tac, but I wasnt sure exactly how things are going to work out. It would suck to go science and have cool abilities, but not be able to stand a chance in pvp.
I have played lots of mmo's, but just as an example. WoW has many classes that are good for pvp, and some that just plain suck.
I dont know how this game balances out, maybe its too early to tell.
I know that just at tier2 I have at least 3 shield boosting abilities, and I rarely am brought down by anything less than 3 players in BoPs. Tank n whittle seems to work very nicely.
That said, even though the ground missions lag behind tactical a tad, I think I've found my niche:
My entire away team is made up of nothing but engineers. Every engineer has the Mine laying ability.
It is glooorious. Think Spartans at Thermopylae in terms of shear slaughter.
I just wonder how it balances out. If tactical usually wins every fight for pvp/pve, then whats the point of choosing any other class than tactical if all you do every mission is battle
If that's how you personally feel, just stick to a Tactical officer and enjoy it rather than trying to convince yourself any differently, or argue about it with strangers.

Nice! That must be freaking awesome. I should try that.

I am playing engineer right now. It just seemed like in the end if all you did is fight, then tactical seems the way to go, but if every class can hold their own in different ways, then it does not concern me too much.
Klingon you'll most likely want to be tactical, because the BoPs are friggin beasts when it comes to hunting, but Feds are a bit more diverse with their ships.

I'd think it'd be the opposite. My first feddie is a tac officer, but I made my first Klingon an engineer since they all fight anyhow, and I can stock up on tac officers for my BoP consoles.
