Recommended start for two players?

My wife and I just bought the pre-order and are in the headstart. Just got through downloading and am now patching. Never having played the game and knowing nothing about classes, races, etc., can anyone tell me if there are any particularly good duo combos? When we play fantasy MMOs, for example, I always play a Healer and my wife plays either a tank or a ranger and we have a great time together. Any suggestions (or does this kind of question even make sense in this type of game)?

Thanks!

If you plan on playing together running one of you as an engineer with a crusier and the other as a science officer with a science ship could be fun.

Science ship and Escort would also be a good combo.

You wont really see any difference until you hit lvl 11 and get your first tier 2 ships though.

I guess I would maybe sudgest one of you do science... or atlast science ship... other then that I think its good either way you go...

just my sudgestion tho I dont KNOW for sure but science is close as you get to healer... in both ship and as your avatar goes... for avatar its mostly got to do with ground skills and stuff you do... and ship is only space...

Like I said just sudgesting this...

It's a tad more complicated than other games. The first response will get you started in the right direction. But its all about carefully selecting skills and bridge officers to to compliment each other.

As close as it gets (right now)...
    in Space:

Science Ship/Science Captains can be great healers and good tanks.
Cruiser Ship/Engineer Captains can be good healers and great tanks.
Cruiser Ship/Tactical Captains can be heavy DPS tanks - takes some skill in PvP for this to work (well, if the enemy is decent anyway).

BO's and the choices made with them will weigh heavily on all of this though. Gear too, but less so than you'd think.

    on the Ground:
Science Officers are healers (if there is such a need outside of Fleet Actions and PvP)
Tactical Officers are tank-ish because of their melee abilities.
Engineers are tank-ish because of their fortification abilities.

    Welcome aboard :)

My husband is our tanky type and I'm always a healer. Right now we're having a blast with him playing an engineer in a cruiser and I as a science officer in a science vessel. Between the two of us we have yet to find a mission/challenge we cannot overcome with our pool of abilities and resources. Good luck and have fun! :)

Wow, what a great community. Great answers, many thanks.

So, I will definitely be playing a Science Officer in a Science ship. The only question now is whether my wife goes Tactical or Engineering. Not quite sure I understand the differences. Pro's and Con's of each?

Thanks guys. Great to be on board finally.

the Engineer/Crusier Science/Science would be a great combo for doing missions as a pair you'll be able to tank anything.

of course this game is about fun you might not find the slow steady team tanking fun

you may find both of you like pouring on the damage and if you both when Tactical/Escort you'd be able to oneshot kill alot of enemies with that kind of alpha strike.

Tactical get damage bonuses and abilities that boost your attacks.

Engineering gets access to ship buffs and even extending shields to assist other ships.

You are not tied down to using cruisers for Engineers or Escorts for Tactical.

Cruisers are the kings of the battlefield but move don't really move well, they make up for this by being hearty and have more guns on both arcs. They excel at giving enemies the biggest broadsides.

Tactical is agile and has many forward facing guns. Plan to do a lot of hit and runs.

It's pretty unconventional to describe concisely and effectively.

My best recommendation would be to jump in and have some fun with your first character slot, then see if a different setup is better for you with the second slot. Unfortunately, the beginning/middle/end of it all can change things quickly, so it's really hard to get best case.

Plus the PvE difficulty is pretty easy overall, and astonishingly easy in early levels once you get the hang of the tactics and controls... so you'll be able to solo/duo anything the game throws at you without planning a min/max build. There's no penalty for death, so well... you'll see.

I would also recommend trying both cannons and beams on the starter ship they play very differently

if you really like cannons then you'll have to go escort or make a klingon , if you a fan of beams then cruiser and sci ship will suit you just fine
