A Critique on "Bad Press"

"From what I hear from World of Warcraft players, queues are pretty common. But then again WoW is the most popular online roleplaying game in the United States, and one of the most popular in the world. Not one I really play, but I can't ignore how many people enjoy playing it.

We are talking Star Trek Online, who I'm sure doesn't even come close to the number of players on average many of the games I played have used. Yet, this launch already has been so fraught with problems, I'm starting to count my blessings that I didn't jump into a lifetime, or even an annual membership."

That's a quote from the quote, unquote bad press that STO has been getting.
I'm not saying that this game isn't going to get actual good or bad press one way or the other. I for one, am also disappointed with the whole situation of not being able to play it. On the other hand, there are arguments both ways as to this being normal of an MMO and as far as I can tell from previous experience, this is true.

That being said, this guy is not "bad press". This guy posted on a website instead of the forum because he needed more attention than I do apparently. I mean, look at that quote up top. "I don't have any specific numbers, but I'm biased against Star Trek having any sort of large following like Warcraft and Starcraft" is basically what he's saying. OH yeah.

Dude you're right. And you're soooooooo cool. I bet Game Informer is looking to hire you tomorrow.
And the people who buy into his "bad press" better read the next Game Informer right now, because it's going to be all right there. Right?

Unless then you're going to tell me that gamer magazines and reviews are all just a conspiracy made up by the companies that make games! Then, I'll just assume that you're paranoid.

I agree, I don't think it's bad press either. I didn't like the servers. So what? I loved the game, and made it clear in the opinion piece.

And that's all this was in the end: An opinion piece.

I agree. There are very strong points on both sides, which is why I am waiting to see what happens, and going to continue trying to play. Cryptic made some mistakes, for sure, but I'm hoping so far they are not fatal mistakes.
That being said, this guy is not "bad press". This guy posted on a website instead of the forum because he needed more attention than I do apparently.

It's not a matter of "needing more attention." I don't know what the traffic is like on the message boards here, so I can't say what would have received more attention to be honest. Although I have to say I have had more people write to me based on the e-mail than I have seen posted on these boards about it.

I chose to express it on my Web site because:

    1. I had a Web site to post it on. As you can see in another thread, there are people who are not happy unless they are being highly insulting with personal attacks and the like, while hiding behind a screenname they think gives them anonymity. Why expose myself to that more than I need to when I have my own soapbox I can use?

    2. I was talking directly to our readers who were Star Trek fans, and possibly not necessarily MMOers, trying to more or less get them to hold off on buying lifetime memberships and annual memberships until we can be sure the technical side can be stabilized, and really, when they are sure they want to play the game long-term. Even I don't want to buy a lifetime membership on something until I know I will be playing for a long time. :)
I mean, look at that quote up top. "I don't have any specific numbers, but I'm biased against Star Trek having any sort of large following like Warcraft and Starcraft" is basically what he's saying. OH yeah.

Huh? I don't even know what that means ... I guess I have to look back at the context of it?
Dude you're right. And you're soooooooo cool. I bet Game Informer is looking to hire you tomorrow.

I am not cool. Geeks aren't cool, don't you know that? :)

And I am not out looking "to be hired." I have run Airlock Alpha for 11 years, and prefer to run my own site than work for someone else. I already work for other people in my day job (which, by the way, is as a print journalist), and that's really enough for me.
And the people who buy into his "bad press" better read the next Game Informer right now, because it's going to be all right there. Right?

Unless then you're going to tell me that gamer magazines and reviews are all just a conspiracy made up by the companies that make games! Then, I'll just assume that you're paranoid.

I never said anything like that. I don't have an opinion one way or another on gaming news outlets, because to be honest, I don't really read them. I bet they are some great publications with some talented writers, don't get me wrong, but I am just not that deep into gaming.

I play casually, try to be the best I can be at gaming, but I just don't share that deep interest in it. I have a lot of respect and admiration for people who do, because I love people who are passionate about what they like, and I think it's great that people can have all kinds of different likes and dislikes.

I guess I know what you're trying to say, but I am not sure why you simply can't stay with the substance of what's being said, rather than where and how it's being said.
