The Exchange Prices

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I noticed during the Open Beta that buying anything on 'The Exchange' was pointless. Everything was so high priced that it was really not worth it. So far, the prices in the 'head start' that people are posting are about half what they were in the Beta. (I still can't afford anything...)

I am looking forward to a time when most items are priced to sell, rather than priced through the roof. It took a long time for that to happen in World of Warcraft. Consider this an appeal to maybe post things at a price people might be able to pay.

100,000 for a Mark III weapon is just silly.

Not only are the prices crazy, but the sections not working does not help. You have to type the full name of the item you want under the "general" tab to search. Toss in that for some reason, I can not sort by price.

So far in this game, I have found no reason to buy ANYTHING. Since the game is so easy.

It is best to just be patient and get everything you need from Loot or Rewards.

This is a sad thing :( . I was hoping for a player driven economy.

Hopefully this will change in the higher levels.

Most of the stuff on the exchange at the moment is stuff that you don't have a hard time finding anyway. Should pick up though when we've got a more even spread of ranks amongst the player base once the game has launched on the 2nd.

In beta nothing had any value, not even currency, as it was all going to be deleted shortly. In that case the values were complete nonsense and had not mechanism to correct themselves.

The current setup with clear up in a week or two when 1: people realize that at level 15 having 100k to spend on anything is absurd, and 2: a lot of stuff can be bought at higher tier starbases for the listed value. That should make prices of things that aren't green/blue/purple converge to somewhere between the replicator value, and the buy from a vendor value.

Greens blues and purples should come down when people realize that a mark III green is usually worse than a mark IV common, (and arguably the blue is as well), so they aren't really worth that much more. No point spending money on an item that an hour from now you'll replace with vendor bought stuff.

Now lets hope they've got a working BigInt class for money at higher levels (unless they've got a 64 bit server architecture but then you get into all sorts of problems swapping between 64 bit sever and 32 bit clients) because end game blues/purples are probably going to be very expensive.

Edit- oh and please, let me sort my searches by price. (even client side, just dump the list of auctions to the client and have it be a UI level sort).

I was expecting to see people selling commodities for like 75 credits. Slightly less than the exchange, but more than you can vendor them for. That's how it usually works with "white" items. They are up there for 1,000 or more each. I didn't even bother looking at weapons and shields.

Weird - most of the stuff I'm seeing sold is just below the "value" listed on the item. Since you can sell stuff to Starfleet vendors for 50% of the value without waiting, I find it's often not even worth it to sell stuff through exchange as you barely get any more money, due to the low prices I'm competing with.

(The inability to sort by price or to look at specific items without manually typing the name is annoying though.)

EDIT: Actually the prices vary pretty widely, but I normally just glance over the crazy prices so they don't even register to me. I assume people are scrolling down and examining all prices, not just the top ones?

I agree I have been doing a simple pricing sceme

    MK I 2500
    MK II 5000
    Mk III 10000
    Mk IV 20000

It seems a fare amount for each level Item....

It will take awhile for the market to settle down. It's supply and demand in its rawest form, and since nobody has any idea how valuable anything is, it'll take time. In the meantime, I'm doing OK with drops, and may kick around the idea of a swap thread for the fleet members.

Are you talking about whites? Do you realize that many of the white items can be bought from vendors for much less? A Mk I Photon Torpedo Launcher sells for ~540. If you are talking about greens, I have to say that the bonuses don't really make that much of a difference.

This is exact the way it works for now. And this is not good for a player driven market system or econemy. I made it since beta to the 9 grade in the first rank and i never bought anything. I don,t need repairs when i,m damaged etc. I really hope this will change on higher levels

Hah! I see no reason to not exploit the loot system in this game right now.

A Quantum Torpedo launcher MK II may be a common item (white). But not only can you not buy it at a vendor, if you don't grind Defend or Fleet actions in an escort for a while, good luck finding one :P. So yes, I'm going to charge you an arm and a leg for one of the 5 weapon systems I've found in 17 levels of play as a science ship. :P

    On a side note:

Once the loot tables balance out a bit, and more stuff pops up on the market, and people start undercutting each other, prices will drop. They've been dropping since the first day the servers opened up for HS.

I put anything up on the exchange for roughly 60 percent it's stated value. A little more than a vendor will give you but much less than they'd charge you to buy it. Unfortunately the search brings up the first 100 items listen under that name so my stuff doesn't really come up because you can't search by price. They should at least let us stipulate a price range. let them know the max we're willing to pay and then get a listing.:o

It is my pledge that as my character, Captain Samuel J Stone of the USS Wyoming, I will sell no item on the exchange at a price higher than its declared worth in the item description. Since I paid no more price to obtain it than happening to find it as loot.

    Who will follow my example?

I will gladly accept that commitment on white drops, and unneeded quest rewards.

I will however increase my prices on the following:
Blue Drops (not rewards) up to 4x list
Purple Drops (not rewards) up to 12x list

Yes more sorting options are needed. I post items at a fair price but no one can find them to buy them. I'm better of selling them in general.

I have been selling decent items that I don't want quite easily. I always price them a little bit below item worth and more than I can sell it to the replicator for. I have not had much of a need to have a TRIBBLE load of "money". I also figure that I'm helping the community a little by selling at a "fair" price.

In just about every MMO I have played, I always undercut the market. Sometimes I sell waaaay below just to clear space. I've even received "thank you" letters from folks minutes after I put it up. I know some folks are going to turn around and sell it for the higher price but I don't care. My goods sell quick and I am happy. :D

The Exchange needs a retouch for sure, not just from the Devs but from us as well.

We really dont need to price things so high, personally i make it a point to go 50% less than what the already lowest price is, hopefully it encourages people. But my guess is that prices will tone down over the next couple of weeks.

MK I and Mk II is starting to come down pretty quick since so many people are at that level right now. And for Mk III it depends on the item, some things are coming down but most are still extravagantly priced. And don't even think about Mk IV right now, everything starts at 50,000 and goes up.

I figure in 2 or 3 months things should settle down. They need a better search function though along with fixing the categories they have now. And the ability to sort by price.

As much as I am an American and support capitolism. Everything including capitolism has a dark side. And the above statement is the prime example of the Dark Side of Capitolism: Greed.

Looting stuff in an MMO is akin to playing the lottery. You have no control over what results you get out of the loot any more than you have control over which numbers come up each drawing for the lottery.

Yet these loot items are priced as if real work, rather than the luck of the draw, had something to do with ther acquisition. Now if specific loot were always dropped by specific mobs, then a measurable and quantifyable value can be placed on them. As it is now, there is only one measurable value associated with sellable items, and that is the designated worth of the item. Which is why, if I sell anything on the Exchange, it will be for that value.

All it means is that it might take me a little longer to acquire the energy credits I may need to get stuff I want. But I am in no hurry. It's an MMO, not a race.

You will find that each item can be had from specific areas, and with enough data you will see that each item will have a specific % chance to be had.

This is quantifiable compensation. If something has a 5% chance to drop, on average it will take 20 times to be had. If I get it in 1 try or 50 it doesn't effect the price. I have just saved you doing something you can only figure will take 20 times to get if you have the credit for it.

Now if you will pay 50k for it when someone else decides to only pay the listed value of 20k, sure I'll sell it to ya for 50k no problem.

I'd just like to remind everyone that the ST universe does not have an 'economy' as such. replicators make everything by assembling the spare matter in the immediate environment and rearranging the molecules, at the sub-atomic scale, into the required components...as there is also a lot of garbage still generated by a society; refuse also powers the replicator's hunger for 'raw' materiel...my point is this...the in-game economy will sort itself out just like Wall St does...remember that.

as the low drop rate of anything that isnt food or batteries im going to hike up prices till i start seeing more items that are not food or batteries the drop rate makes them rare enough. anything starfleet such as phasers and what not i useualy just throw in the replicator but disrupters and what not stuff you dont find so easy is priced make profits.
