I am stunned that Cryptic did not anticipate this. Star Trek has 4 spin off series from TOS, 10 movies and even a language course in a college teaching one of its made up languages. It spans more than 40 years and has a fan base from Europe to Asia. There have been a dozen or so computer games already made, most expanded on by the fans that play them. It has been made into a cartoon and has been characterized in everything from SNL to The Family Guy.
This isn't WOW or EVE or any other MMO where it was based on a new premise or idea. Cryptic failed to see the bigger picture with this project and has compounded that error in judgment with server issues every single day.

Good article, very accurate imho. Granted the missed the names of cryptics other mmos, City of Champions? lol should have been city of heroes/villains and champions online but other than that he's spot on.
But I have been a part of a lot of different launches of games, ranging from Dark Age of Camelot, EverQuest II, Lord of the Rings Online and Dark Age of Camelot.
He repeats a game name and uses improper grammar. That gem, along with some other "quirks".... this really isn't anything more than a glorified blog...

Certainly not "press".
The movie Julia and Julia was conceived from a simple blog. That movie has one of Hollywoods top
actresses in it, Meryl Streep. Not bad for a blogger.
Never heard of the site, article is amateurish, but the advice is sound. I'd tell anyone who asked me to wait until Cryptic gets this sorted. They're only going to hate the game if they try to play now.
Now let's hope that Cryptic can do the smart thing.
Somehow I think people are forgetting there is nothing 'special' about Pre-release. Anyone person with a credit card could get the game early. What Cryptic did was grossly underestimate the amount of people that would flood the front door at the first chance of paying the game. We are not really special, jsut impatient and wanted to play early...so several hundred or thousand people bought the game early now Cryptic is caught with it's pants down not ready for us all.
Personally, yes it sucks we are losing pre-release playtime. I don't like it, but eh...*****ing aint going to fix it. However, I am going to watch the first few days of actual release before I start pitching a fit and demanding my money back...
Stop spamming your blog site. That's not the media.
Correction. WE are internet media. Most news these days gets spread through blogs and other average-joe type sites. Even NBC and other large news conglomerates have aired stories on that fact.
Impressions made from head-start weekend do not make a review worth two *****. Also, this website is completely obscure. I could see if a site like IGN was posting a review of STO like this right now, you might have a reason to call it "bad press." But they have writers that are smart enough to not gauge an entire game's future on what happens during one of the busiest times in its launch.
To the author of this blog post: You switch pronouns between "we" and "I". Pick one pronoun for yourself and stick with it for the entire duration of the article. This will help your posts look more professional.
Critique his grammar and typos if you want to keep defending Cryptic's viewpoint, but you can't really argue with the points he is making. It would be one thing if a company hadn't every developed a full scale MMO before to have these kinds of issues, but Cryptic has already been through launches before. Use the lessons learned from those and apply them here.
I didn't complain during beta because, well it's beta, there are supposed to be issues. And I expect there to be downtime to fix the issues we all reported were impacting the game. Beta is not play time it was our chance to QA the game and tell them what we saw was wrong. Beta is over now, so things have changed.
When you advertise a pre-order benefit of being able to play the game earlier than other players as a reward to supporting them by pre-ordering then guess what, the game better be ready to go during head start. It's what was promised and has woefully failed to be delivered.
I suppose if I had nothing better to do than to wait in a queue to play, then I wouldn't be quite as upset. However, my play time is limited. So when I have the ability to log in and play for 30 min to 1 hour then I expect the game to be available. Now even when the game is up (I haven't calculated the actual percentage of time the server has been up, but I know it isn't a good number) it isn't available due to server load issues forcing a queue.
They were shocked at the number of players that were started during open beta. Fine. They ordered new servers to help with the load. Good. But you can't tell me that you are suprised by the number of people that want to play during head start. They have the numbers of how many copies of the game were sold and failing to properly plan to account for that is going to crush this games reputation.
I really like the game. I think the content is great. I really... really want to see it do well. But from what I have seen so far this sadly seems to be on the same course as SWG. I hope they fix it before that happens.
new games especially MMO's are like fine wines they get better with time im sure STO is no different maybe the lagg is bad but every game thats online that i have played has lagg at some point, wether it be WoW, runescape, Warhammer, aion even modern warfare 2 has bad lagg problems, and talking of muck ups and modern warfare 2 what the hell is host migration all about.
i love the look and idea of this game and ill gladly sit through lagg and waiting times to play it
just went ans poked around this site, not much there for content, the fat guy who wrore the above mentioned piece has only one thread on the forums that I could find, about the best dressed doctor on telivision. first paragraph is apologising for his ignorance, the rest flaunting it.

This ... Is all you need to know.
And honestly, Cryptic got alot accomplished with a starting staff of 40.. Yeah, 40.
Give it time.
Disaster ? Not yet ! Wait till tomorrow.

When G4 or Gamespot, or Wired, or some you know relevant source starts in then we can talk.
Cryptic is on the verge of a disaster launch of proportions we haven't seen since Anarchy Online.
The population will never recover if people's first impressions are the game being unplayable for days at a time.
