For everyone that wants to actually know what's going on with the STO servers go to http://www.mmoserverstatus.com/star_trek_online

It gives you a list of all the servers and which ones are up and which ones aren't.

As you can see the reason they have the queue going on right now is only one server is up :P

I'm curious how they determine this. Do you know how they determine the number of physical servers?

Wait a minute...there are more than one game server? And they're offline?

Guess thay'll turn them on at launch, eh?

Pre-Order, get the "special treatment." :p

If they had just told us that there is a problem keeping them from having all servers up. and that this way, at least some people could play... I would have found this quite acceptable. Perhaps they will update us soon.

Actually they're all supposed to be on right now, the number of servers running has been bouncing up and down all day, server 1 is the only one that I haven't seen online yet.

This seems bugged, or delayed. I'm currently in-game, as are a lot of other people, and this site says none of the game servers are online..

If I'm right, those are physical machines.
See, a "server" in an MMO can be a collection of many physical machines. The physical hardware is what takes the player's input, processes it, then outputs it to the rest of the game universe and you. Each server in WoW, for example, could be one or many physical machines. In STO, they are using a single shared server so if you had 4 physical machines, they would all be passing data between each other. You can add on to this shard almost without limitless without having to add more virtual servers.

However, without knowing how that information is gathered, we can't say if it's accurate. And even if it is, I'd wager that those other 3 servers are having problems.

I don't trust this server status page one bit. For one thing, it has claimed the website is down for the last ten minutes, and I've been using it with no issues.

The number of servers is based off the number if IP's they have found, it in no way means the number of physical servers they have.

The IP's are virtual IP's for server clusters. This is the way all high availability systems are built. Now if shoddy code jacks up all the clusters will thats another story.

    *Edit*

This also allows for rolling reboots so the whole system is not down if they need to restart a non-responsive cluster.

those are probably being gathered from ping returns.

a busy server, one with max connections, will refuse a ping connection. see it all the time at work.

they're too busy to respond basically

I don't trust it. It says the website is offline, which is completely innacurate. Also that there is no game servers up, which is also innacurate.

    It's not remotely accurate...

Says the website and game server(s) are offline, but I can visit the website just fine and I'm playing the game right now, so I know the server is online...

    TRIBBLE server status page, IMO.

    Whatever.
If they told you on a minute-by-minute basis exactly what the server status is, you trolls would still complain. The whole "just give us more information and we'll be happy" is a huge LIE.
