If the current extremely low unnecessary skill cap is in effect you will bork your skill tree. Make every skill count and make sure you decide on what you want to do before spending skill points.
the cruiser one says any type of cruiser....the ones after that though affect only that tier ship and worth it only if respeccing is available once you leave that tier ship.
They're not required. And i don't think they ever were.
I dont recall that either. Dumping 9 levels in 'heavy cruiser' becomes 9 levels of wasted points once you ditch the heavy cruiser for the exploration cruiser....and so on.
I hope respecs are added by the time I hit the galaxy class

Yes, yes they were... It was in that whole thing about the 'inverted skill tree' that Zinc was talking about... he specifically said the only true skill tree in the game was the ship skills and that you needed to be able to fly a saber, for instance, before you could fly an akira. That you had to have mastered the lower tier ship of a type, in order to fly the higher ones.

if that were true you could TRIBBLE yourself into flying a low tier ship forever?
Here it is, from the player progression page... not the interview I first remember reading it in, but its the same thing.
The skill points you invest in space also determine which ships you can fly. Youll need to have invested skill points in the Heavy Cruiser skill to be able to fly a second-tier Cruiser, for example.
Putting points into Heavy Cruiser just to be able to fly the heavy cruiser is ********, because you get the heavy cruiser before you are even able to put points into that skill!
In Open Beta, I've been captaining the heavy cruiser and the galaxy without putting a single point in their skills, because it doesn't say that it improves the later tier skills too. Cryptic we need clarification!

Go check it out yourself.
Has anyone left those skills empty and still gotten next tier ships?
