Cryptic your engine is leaking memory and causing crashes.

Here is a screen shot of the error.

Fatal Error: Direct3D driver returned error code
(D3DERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY) while creating debth/stencil surface.
Unique Error ID: 5625432

I suggest you call these guys for some help finishing STO Cryptic.

The game is not ready for launch.

how much RAM does your vid card have? cause it doesnt mean there is a memory leak - when you only have 512 and are using a high rez with 8xAA or more you will run into this issue easily

im playing in 2560x and cant fully use AA because my video card only has 786

If thats the "proof" you offer I don't think Cryptic has anything to worry about. Plus this is not related to Gameplay....file it under bugs if you want to complain.

Yeah, when I try to qualify NASCAR with my 1986 Escort with a rag for a gascap and exhaust held on with coathangers, and it overheats, breaks down, and doesn't work?

TOTALLY the fault of the racetrack I'm on.

Bug it. Bug it. Bug it. Bug it. Bug it. Bug it. Bug it. Bug it.

You know in the CRASH REPORT FORM that popped up when it crashed? Not on the forums which are at best read by community reps.

I had about four crashes in beta, and have had two in headstart.

And a company shouldn't release a game with memory leaks? Cool story bro because doing so is industry standard. You still occasionally find "fixed memory leak" in WoW patches.

That's an analogy an idiot would use. The proof is right in front of you.

Industry standards do not meet up to my standards so they can KMA. I'm gonna reboot so I can get back in and file a bug report ticket.

Good for you. If you think they are going to better industry standards and halt the launch one day from release I kindly suggest you are off with the fairies.

There is a bug report forum and a bug report ingame AND a crash report tool when you get a crash (doesn't always work depending on how severe the crash is). Posting this here is just a pointless whine.

I become sometimes the same message! My card (GTX 260) have 1033 DDR 3 Ram, and i own a very good gaming pc. This has not to do with the card, it is happening sometimes in some missions!

haven't seen this issue yet with a video card that has only 512mb of ram.

512 mb of ram on a gpu is plenty for any game.

No it isn't, the higher your gaming resolution, quality, draw distance, AA, bloom etc all eat at that GPU ram. 512mb is not enough if you want to try and be smart and crank your settings to high or ultra.

Well if you want to play the game in window mode expect issues. Try it again in full screen, then you can report it as a bug/issue. Window mode means you still have to draw the toolbar and everything else, aswell as the gaming window EVERY frame. So yes it will put more strain on your card and system. So use fullscreen.

Fair enough, but I play in windowed mode when I'm playing unstable games because it's easier to recover and not have to reboot. The screen shot I posted wasn't even taken in game. That's post crash. The game itself was complete frozen and not responding. Then I hit print screen and pasted it into a bmp file so I can upload it to an image host and post it here for people to see.

Are you using the latest Nvidia driver? I'm using the latest with a GTX 285 and haven't had a single crash so far in head start. Also make sure your DirectX is updated and that none of your hardware components are overclocked which can cause this kind of problem as well.

Yes I am. 196.21 for my GTS 250 1gb. Direct X 11 and I don't overclock. Infact I have PhysX disabled and AA forced to 2x to reduce strain.

I am using an ATI card and have not experienced that. The memory usage on my machine seems rather stable, in fact much better than a lot of other games I've played. Both posters in the thread who report it occurring are using nVidia cards. It might be an issue with the nVidia drivers. Or Direct3D. Or the game. Or some combination (the game may have exposed a previously unknown bug somehwere else).

If anyone experiences a memory leak, definately file a report.

I woudln't put it past Nvidia to put out ****** drivers, but it's also Cryptic's responsibility to optimize and update the game to be compatible with card manufacturers drivers. I'm still convinced it's the game because this is the first time I've had an out of memory error since everquest came out.

I love it when people think their issue with the game has to be the game when usually it is them having their settings to high just because they think their pc can handle it. Been playing since november and have not had any issue. Of course I turned some of the extra bells and whistles down for better performance.

It isn't nvidia only - i've had the same error on my 5970 when in ground combat and explosions have been going off. It's just the game engine needing tuning and will be on their long list of bugs to fix. Of the 4 crashes ive had in headstart 2 have thrown this error and 2 havn't said a thing.

Oh and whoever said overclocking can cause this problem is an idiot. I'm sorry but ocing components does not cause errors relating to not enough memory -.-

The graphics and textures in this game are nowhere near high enough to warrant cards with 512mb+ of graphics memory unless playing at above 1920x1200 with lots of AA, and it wont be a requirement once cryptic have had time to fix up the engine (though it will help while the engine is in its current state).

Ah ah ah, even a bug report gets flamed by the fanbois. This game is dooooooooomed, not because it is unfinished but because the fanbois will never let anyone debug it :p

I play with a similar setup as yours

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00 GHZ
    4 gig of RAM
    GeForce 260GT 1068 mb

I haven't crashed since I play, my ram never exceed 80% utilisation (I monitor it with the small LCD screen in my G15 Keyboard)

However in Beta I had to downgrade from 196.62 to 190.62 cause there was choppy framerate in some area for a ton of people with GeForce 200 series video card. So for the moment I've let it at that driver version, might wanna try it ?

This is not uncommon with MMOs... AOC still crashes every now and then from memory leaks (in fact, there are few games I've played that haven't crashed a few times during long gaming sessions).

Just make sure you click "submit" and Cryptic will do their best to address it (after all, it's in their best interest too).

I have a feeling that it is not the report, but that it was posted in the gameplay forum, with an attitude of venom rather than helpfulness. But, hey, you insist on calling names, so I guess your argument fails from the start.

Anyways, on the topic, I'm running a Radeon 3870 x2 and I'm not seeing any memory leaks either. I've tried playing with my settings WAY too high, and the game does have punishing frame rate loss in some areas, but I've yet to have a memory leak such as this.

I'll have to check my DirectX version.

i've had this card for two years. 8800 gts 512, has ran every game i've thrown at it on high to max settings at 1900x1080 with no issues.

only thing that takes up ram is textures. the higher the resolution textures, and the more different textures, the more ram that will be eaten. general resolution, AA, bloom, HDR, DX10, etc etc, all take up GPU processor time, not GPU ram.

i have yet to see a game that matches or surpasses crysis in terms of graphics quality or GPU demand. and my PC is more than a match for crysis despite being two years old.

i run STO with default setting except resolution at 1900x1080 or w/e. i even have shadows on and have no issues.

i ran aion at max settings and had no video lag, even in sieges without turning off players after they fixed the memory leak in that game.

ran supreme commander at max settings and only had lag when i had more than one ai opponent, due thaat game being a cpu hog.

ran fallout 3 max settings no video lag.

tell me a game that is demanding of one's GPU and i'll run it on high to max settings no problem.

I have never seen that problem on my system, which isn't as powerful as yours is.

I would consider that maybe you have some other issues with your computer system. I am able to run the game with all the sliders cranked to the max. ALL of them to the max, including the ones that say things like "300%". (The only one I don't run high is the Bloom, because pushing that higher just makes everything washed out by the extreme brightness of the starts and other effects.)

Ignorance is relative. To myself and the software engineers that are working on this game making broad assumptions based on this error is ignorant. This "prooves" a memory leak no more than a rattling sound in your car "prooves" that your wheel is about to fall off.

Stick with what you know and understand, and when you don't ask a question of those that do understand so that you may learn for next time.
