The Launcher Client from Steam IS NOT WORKINGYou cannot play the game with SteamSteam will DELETE your client and force a complete redownload
Contrary to what some have said, the issues with STEAM are ongoing.
I am demanding a refund for my STEAM STO preorder (because STEAM charges your CC immediately for preorders) and buying the game from a local retailer.
SAVE YOUR TIME, MONEY, AND FRUSTRATION: DO NOT BUY FROM STEAM.

never had a problem with steam since i started using it just before half life 2 came out so many years ago. don't have that many games through it, but use it whenever it's available for games i want to play.
Just don't download it through Steam and you're set, however. That's what I did, no problems here.
Yeah, just backup the current game and go to install it, but instead of letting it actually download just grab the key from Steam then delete the game/shortcut from Steam, then launch from the backed up version of STO.
Basically what the above poster said.
i bought the game through steam and the only thing i have experienced on that list is the re-download when the head start went live, other than that zero issues with steam, now Cryptic on on the other hand has been making it hard to stay happy with my over 300 cnd purchase.
I think the problem was with people who were using the Beta client from Steam. People who downloaded STO from Steam after the Headstart wouldn't have been affected, I'd wager.
The desktop will not launch it but the laptop does, but they both run the same steam account.
So it's totally random
I also downloaded the beta from Steam when I pre-ordered at the start of OB. I did, however, keep that beta fully updated through the OB launcher prior to headstart.
I just don't get why everyone is having a problem that I'm not having. Someone else mentioned that it had something to do with launching the game via desktop icon v. opening steam and launching it through there. I always click on the STO desktop icon.
Ah I see. Yeah launching the game through the Cryptic Launcher to update is the right way to go, I think the problem was people trying to update the game using Steam. Rather, the fact that they didn't disable updates for the game inside Steam settings.. it seems Steam went to update the game by itself, saw that the game wasn't where it was supposed to be (god knows why) and decided to redownload the entire thing.
I think you may be right. I bought and downloaded the special edition version on Steam just after the Headstart and have had no problems (other than in-game bugs).
I launch it through Steam too.
There's no good reason to not use Steam if you haven't downloaded it yet, really, as far as I've gathered.
The issue only seems to affect people who had a copy of the client before Headstart, I think.
Still, if you download the game through Steam, remember to use the Cryptic Launcher to patch, just for safety's sake.
It's perfectly working on steam dude !
Haha.
They always seem to forget though, that for every person that quits, two or three people will sign up.
This.
Ive bought from Steam, did have the complete re download, looked into it, set the game to not auto update, launch game via STO folder and not steam. Works.
Also made a backup just incase.
Yes it is
Yes you can
It did not do that for me.
I believe you if you say you have these issues but it might be a config issue as it is far from universal. I know several people who have managed to get Steam STO working (albeit with all the other bugs associated with this no quite ready for prime time game)
I purchased STO Preorder Digital Deluxe Edition from Steam. I had the STO beta already installed and simply applied the supplied key to my STO account. I simply then ensured that my steam client did not download STO, as I already had it installed, which is pretty easy to do, so do not see what the big issue is?
All you have to do is apply some common sense
But you know what? I had to be patient for 5 hours and then I tried to get in but the server was down 8)
Oh what a release.
once it downloaded and installed, the install files deleted themselves
It's pretty silly to have to isolate a game from Steam that I bought... from Steam. Star Trek Online is the first MMO I bought via digital distribution rather than buying the disks from a game store. It certainly won't be the last, as CD/DVD will go the way of the dodo for video games in the somewhat near future. In the mean time, I'll tell anyone that will listen to avoid buying MMOs from Steam. The convenience is most certainly not worth the trouble at this point.
Would you kindly stop cluttering up every single forum with this? We get it, you're unsatisfied. Doesn't mean the rest of us that purchased from Steam are having problems.
