Fresh headstart, fresh forums I guess...ah well here is the updated guide anyway:
Crafting 101:

So first I'll say that the existing system is pretty limited at low levels and may be replaced at any time.
With that said it is very simple and with massive farming it is a straight path.
The Practical upshot is that a fleet can do this pretty well and soloists will have such a ScanFarming time cost that they could farm the rare drops more easily.
During Beta it took 28 transactions to open Tier 2
On Live it took 63.
===> There is no known way to tell how far along you are - please post if you find one.
Medium Hypo . - . - . - . -Used for Large Hypo(2 of each red Research item - 6 total)
Medium Shield Charge . -Used for Large Energy charge(also 2 of each red - 6 Total)
These two items are the only combines that only use cheap red bits. The rest of the tier 1 upgrades require larger amounts of both low level and higher level research bits. (Usually 21 total)
All Crafting combines start with a Base item (like the Medium Hypo) plus some research bits to create an upgraded version - a green quality item for the Tier 1 - Blue item for Tier 2.
So to start you go to Memory Alpha - talk to the lady officer in the center of the base(Romaine) and hit up her store for 60+ items or so opening the next set of vendors.
The three Tier2 Vendors are in rooms on the left side of the base and again buying upgrades from them opens them, though we have no idea how many and it is extremely likely that each Tier2 vendor opens the single Tier3 vendor in each section.
is there a known source of medium hyposprays and sheild charges besides random drops? I've only been able to find about 5 or so total and that 60 count is looking far off.
As a sub-questing, is it 60 items, or is it 60 'anomalies' worth of items?
If it's 60 anomalies, that's perfectly reasonable.
If it's 60 items, and given that crafting makes green items (which are hardly overpowered, since drops are a more reliable way to get green items or better), having to make enough phasers and torpedos to outfit 20 Mirandas, per person, is completely bonkers.

think i saw a shop on ds9 that sold them, though not a 100% sure.

I dont't get it, I upgraded at least 80 items and still the next one won't open up the shop.
Hmm, in that case, my guess is that the game counts item inputs rather than total transactions. So you have perform transactions with many inputs rather than transactions with just a couple.
This whole game is designed for everything to take forever so Cryptic can milk you for more subscription money.
not true!
I made it to commander in about a week in OB and I'm already LT grade 8 now (impressive considering that's about 3 hours of game play between downtime and sleeping).
I do think, how ever, it should not take you longer to unlock the next tier of parts to craft than it takes you to advance 2 ranks.

You can buy them in the Andoria system, the planet where you can do some ground pvp has vendors that sell the medium hypos.
I have to agree at this current time the upgrade/craftng system seems to be fail.. going to hold onto all my drops in bank until an update/patch presents itself to correct this problem.
The crafting/upgrade system would be alright and I do get the idea of use a certain vender X amount of time b4 you can use the next one which I assume will add better bonus's to items you upgrade.
BUT
There needs to be more instruction on how this works and a crafting tab in your UI so you can track progression.
It may also help to turn all the items you need to upgrade/craft into a certain type of currecny so it doesnt overburden your inventory collecting enough stuff to even participate in the idea of leveling up crafting/upgrading. If you dont get what I am saying an example would be like how your merits are shown in inventory, you should have a crafting tab that shows materials gathered, it would show XX mineral samples, XX radiation samples in form of currency instead of inventory clutter. Just my opinion though.
I'm sorry but I am throwing this out there. I am not playing heastart or beta (have to wait till tues.), but seriously everyone complaining like they can't max a craft in 2 days?... WTF. Also, in which MMO was the begining crafted stuff ever used. I think some of you are to used to Blizzard makeing things easier for you and now expect this game to be the same with a perfect system. IMO it seems you just want to keep it current to see what it leads to in the end.

The biggest problem, is that no one is exactly sure HOW the crafting progression goes. Its just a "turn in until something happens"
The starter crafted items could be very useful...to starting players. Their only not used in a system that has matured some, and everyone knows where to get better items.
Besides until you get in game and see how miserable farming this stuff can be, you cant really expect anyone to take your criticism seriously

Excuse me for mixing fan universes, but FRAK that.

You can buy them from your replicator.
I cant on my replicator only small hypos, I presume you have to be a certain rank or is there some other replicator upgrade?
Geez this "crafting" system is so awful.
Who wants to beam down with me to Dark Iron Iron mountain, to farm ore? Oh wait wrong game.

But isn't it simpler to go do some Exploration Missions or PvP a bit to get the very same items. A lot less time, AND you would get Exp and Merits?
A lot of work to be done methinks
Edit, just had a thought, is it transactions OR the number of resources you turn in?
I've only ever been able to buy small hypos myself.
Then what you are getting is not worth the time you put into it.
I think they really need to rethink what they want with this 'Crafting' system.

Completely off topic (sorry) but MechaBunneh that sig has one of the best explanations for no death penalty in the game LMAO!!
Its like the TNG episode where they kept blowing up until Data remembered the "3's"
