Ok so as we all very well know there are always rules to what you can call your characters/ships with games. This is no different and I have just read the actual policy on this and have noticed that good percentage of people I find in-game are actually breaching the naming policy.
So my simple question is this. Is it actually helpful for us as the community to report name violations?
Or is this percieved as an annoyance for the GM's?
Basically I want to know if I need to go on a crusade or not

But in all fairness I have in fact so far reported 1 person for a seriously rude/offensive name. That being said I would still like to know if from a GM's point of view that is just annoying or actually helpful.

oh well, so what if someone has a name like a character off the show... so what? how does that hurt anyone?... just leave em alone.
how do you know my name isnt Kirk ?
.*Spoing !
Completely irrelevant.
That said, they probably have slightly more on their plate right now than dealing with naming violations. A month from now, go for it. Right now, just be thankful that the people you wouldn't want to play with are freely marking themselves that way for you.
Next immersion breaker (that's the word!), all that armor. I shut it off on my guys but never have I seen starfleet in armor. It really looks out of place.
Not entirely. Legally yes but people still like liberty.
I don't really have the time or energy to keep up with reporting every name violation because there are so many of them and there will be so many more but if im helping the GM's do their job by reporting then I will do so.
Also I was expecting posts against this as obviously there are a lot of people this concerns and as such they don't want to lose their oh so original name.
People like a lot of things. But that doesn't change the fact that if Cryptic decided that they could ban you for using the letter Q in your name, you'd have no recourse if you picked a name including the letter Q and got banned. The First Amendment is completely irrelevant to MMOs, and really the internet in general.
Huh? Yes you can just go the tailor in space dock...all mine are standardized. Just takes some energy credits.
Those are at least names that would annoy me, and get a report, no matter how many things the GM's have on their hands.
GM's usually aren't developers, so they have a different task-list and a different job-descriptions. Hunting down such names is definitely one of the things from that list. And even if they really are too busy right now, they will have time too hunt down the reported names later on.
So go ahead, and report them.
Only works for your toon and your crew, but right click on your armor and hit 'hide from uniform". Works with Kits as well. Hopefully they'll add more stuff like this. For instance we have a holster command, but your BOs won't holster their weapons. Anyways RP stuff for later I suppose, hopefully they'll add depth to this game because man they have the IP of a lifetime here and could really turn this into something. Not that it already isn't, I mean I have really been getting into it and despite the amount of combat, it does feel like Star Trek. Then again I've mostly been doing exploration missions and PvP.
Doesn't even take energy credits if it's the first time change. I do the same thing
If you're not aware, you can turn off the appearance of armor and kits. Just go to your character sheet for yourself or your BOs, right click on the item and select "Hide from costume".
As are mine, I'm talking about 'security officers' and such, you know the guys that aren't your BOs. Guess at one point it won't matter, but even then it would be nice if all your guys defaulted to your current uniform when you got them/ have nameless redshirts.
While this is true, it doesn't get the generic security team you are given until you have enough BOffs, nor does it get the generic bridge crew to fill all the stations until you have enough of your own. The generics stick out like a sore thumb.
Very true...
i don't see why security would need standardized since you can have a full landing party of BO's pretty much from the beginning.
Correct however that doesn't mean people don't want the freedom to say/name what they wish. They are at the whim of the host, but that doesn't take away from the will. That's all I'm saying, not that they have some right, but they still want to do what they will. It's the spirit of the first I'm talking about rather than actual implementation.
They really do. It's annoying! It really breaks it for me when all my guys have a pseudo DS9 gray shoulder/class trim going on and then theres a guy in a big red shirt right next to them.
Offensive names, I report. Names that are exactly as they are in a series or movie, I report. Last names used to roleplay as someone's son, daughter, third cousin twice removed, I do not report. I know it's not strictly by the book but at least they are not just making a carbon copy.
Could you really report someone who rolled up and roleplayed Kuglar son of Alexander son of Worf son of Mogh?
That said, REPORT AWAY!
This is Star Trek Online. I'td be nice if people could have the respect to name their ship something fitting.
People who name their ship USS Whoopazz are immature douche bags. Frankly I'd love to see them banned, so report away!
Report away, report away.
The next time you fly by me in the USS Pizzaface, know that you just got reported. Yes, I have that much free time and I'd love to see you get a forced name change.
First Amendment only limits what the government can do. The servers this forum run on are private property and you have NO rights here only privileges the owners of said property deem to give you.
This isnt' beta.
I'm going to request that you spend some time learning the user interface instead of making assumptions. I would say that a good 60-70 percent of the complaints on gameplay issues (fonts, graphics, etc.) are all from failure to know the UI and the Options tab.
Uniforms: I haven't messed with the SAVE and LOAD options under the costumes because I believe it will save the head and body portions as well - not good. Each crewmember you get assigned gives you the option to set the uniform as soon as they join your team. I don't mind a few moments of dragging them to supply and having them get in appropriate ship uniform before I post them to duty. This doesn't work for the security teams (who in many of the films had their own unique uniforms anyways) but by Lieutenant 7 I had a full party as it was and no longer a concern.
A simple Right Click on the Armor slot and you can "Hide from Costume" - in other words, not see it even though it's there.
As to OP...
I myself wouldn't waste the time reporting people with dumb names. A lot of things can be immersion breakers if you think about it! How about all the players running thru space dock with weapons drawn? Annoying but oh well. C'est la vie
The GM's rely on US to report violations.. They haven't the resorces ,or the time to check the data base for all the people that just have to be Rude, Irreverent, immature, and otherwize a general bugger. And don't forget you can Right click on a Person's name [spammer, ect] and report them in a single click. Reporting Spammers also Blocks them from showing in your chatt as well.
